Hey Guys -

I have not been able to start my Blast today. I have not been riding it all that frequently but I did have it out a few weeks ago give it a work out. It was a little tough to start then since it had been a couple months since I rode it.But after I got it going it ran fine

I finally get it to sputter and run for maybe 5 seconds then it dies. I would let it sit then try again but couldn't quite get it to go and stay running. So now I am charging the battery since that got a little weak after trying for awhile.

I shouldn't really need to give it any gas(throttle) to start it correct?

I know the jets might be clogged or the filter could clog from sitting. Any other first impressions?

( I keep it in a warm garage. )

Thanks

Once in a while I like to run some carburetor cleaner or Heet through mine. Every time I had trouble similar to yours, that fixed it. I have been lucky with Das Boot so far...

Check for rodent infestation in the exhaust. One time I had a snowmobile exhaust that mice were storing acorns in. It took a while to burn it all out. It would start then die out once the exhaust pressure built up, usually just a couple of seconds.

Check the basics, sparkplug and wire, fuel line flow and the like.

Boot looks ok. Definitely not acorns in the pipe.

Carb cleaner? Does that clear the jets? Will that work if not running?

Try changing the boot - then diagnose.

I don't think it is the boot. Only 3k and it looks fine. Besides it is under warranty so I am not going to go too far.

So if it starts but doesn't keep running there is spark. Probably not a fouled plug (yet anyway) Getting air assuming good boot.

Clogged jet? or some other fueling problem. Does't seem to get high enough revs to keep running.

Am I on the wrong track?

She wants to fire every time I wait a bit she starts to fire.

I remvoved and replaced the cap thinking vacuum in the fuel line.

The only reason I kept trying is it was really hard to start last time but once I got her going she ran like a champ.

Champ is on the ropes.

Check to see if fuel freely flows through the fuel line.
Remove the line from the carburetor and turn the valve on and see how fast the fuel runs out of the line. It should come out pretty good almost filling the line.

If you have had some ethanol fuel in it it could have ate up the inside of the fuel line.

What about safety switches - are they disabled - kickstand, clutch, and BAS?

Holding the clutch in - even though in neutral. I can try to put the kickstand up. What is BAS?

It seems to be something clogged in the fuel line. Since it starts after sitting a bit. I open the throttle a bit and it fires for maybe 5 seconds - then dies like it is not getting gas. Then subsequent attempts to turn it over only sputters then nothing. Until you let it sit for a while.

So I am going to try what Swampy said and see if the fuel comes out if the fuel line. If so - then the jet is next right? What do I do about that? Is there any thing I can add to de-clog?

I am away on business till Friday.

I would recommend that you just take the carburetor off the bike and take it apart to clean it. Especially if you have not had one apart before.
When you get things apart you can use some spray can carb cleaner to clean the jets and other parts.
Just make sure you do not spray anything on the vacuum diaphragm. And if you take the cover off, that you get the diaphragm seated very carefully under the cover again without pinching it.

I guess I need to look up the carb assembly in the shop manual on line.

So - took the plug out and replaced ( good spark) gas smells a little old. Drained the old gas out and put new gas in.

It turned over and fired and ran longer than it did before. About 20 seconds and dies. It might be that the gas was old and needs to run through the system. Next I guess is to take the carb off and clean it.

Does the auto enricher ever become an issue? I thought it was open at cold start then closes when the element gets hot?

just curious.

If it will idle for 20 seconds, enrichner is not an issue (still might be bad, but you should be able to keep the bike running).

I'd pull the slow jet and check for a clog.

We're assuming that your not doing anything else to the bike while its running (putting it in gear, pulling in the clutch, letting out the clutch?, putting the kickstand up or down). Various safety switches can drive you crazy. If your starting the bike with the clutch pulled in, leave it pulled in (wrap it with a bungie cord or strap or clamp, etc.).

Hey Guys -

Once I got the gas to flow through she fired up. I think it was the bad gas and possibly the partially fouled plug.

Even though the bike was under warranty it was good to get it going myself.

Hopefully the weather will clear up enough that I can get it out to ride today.

Thanks !

Dont bother cleaning the carb. Why do you think it needs cleaning? Do you have a running problem?
You can clean the outside up with carb and choke cleaner. If you really think there is a problem, carefully pull the float bowl and check for debris. The slow jet is known for getting clogged when the bike sits for a long time (but its not guaranteed).
The carb is like the engine. You wouldnt take the engine apart just because it had been sitting?(some would, but those are other issues). Except for a clogged slow jet or debris from a bad filter or old fuel line, nothing is to be gained by pulling it all apart 'just to clean it' (except to clean the float bowl out or replace/clean the jet).

If your not familiar with carbs, its best left alone.

cuz thats what some harley guys told me to do ~ lol
they think there's debris/gunk clogging it up as it sat for a year or so, with some gas in it. we did have it running, then i would start it every day, let it run for a little bit, but then i missed a day & it wouldn't start again. boots been changed, fuel filter is clean ~ i don't know what else to check. when you try to start it, it sounds like it wants to, but it doesn't have enough to kick it over.

Swtcheeks,
Try changing the sparkplug. Check to make sure the cap is tight on the plug.
I just found one loose on the Little Kids Blast when I changed out the front isolator, and that has an NGK cap on it.

Besides agreeing with what Swampy and EZ said, I defer to my earlier post. If you think its a carb problem, I'd just pull the float bowl and the slow jet.
Starting it every day and letting it run a little, really only helps to drain the battery and foul the plug. Starting it once a week and perhaps keeping a battery charger on it (such as a Battery Tender) would be better. A quick jaunt around the block wouldnt hurt either.
Besides the spark plug, a clogged slow jet will do what you described as well as a bad clutch or neutral safety switch.

Also, double check the boot.
Good luck and keep us posted.

thanks guys ~ i have a new battery, already replaced the boot, new plug & wire too! i already have it taken apart to the carb, so i think i'm going to check the slow jet & make sure its not clogged, then put the new fuel line on & put it back together. i will double check to be sure i have the spark plug cap on tight too. i hope it starts. i'll be back!

I'm telling ya! I told ya before! Well, I posted months ago. When my Blast inexplicably dies, and it's not die aufladung, I dump a bottle of gas treatment in it, and it's fine. I always get something that claims to remove moisture and clean the entire fuel system.
