I have never done any carburetor work but the but the guys who made this carburetor that Buell Harley and Kawasaki use really knew what K.I.S.S. means! Everything is simple and precise. I live in NM at about 5300 ft and travel to 8000 ft regularly. I modified the stock exhaust to make it breath better and now I want to re-jet the carburetor. What jets should I use at this altitude? Also I hate that air box. What can I replace it with? Will breathers that bolt on a Harley Sportster bolt onto the blast carburetor

also would anyone suggest drilling a 1/8 hole in the top of the carb for better throttle response. I have seen some chatter about doing that

Welcome to the Badweb Stoneciphes!

Not knowing what high altitude is as I am a Flatlander Troll, I think you need to lean the carb out. The air is thinner up where you are and normal carb jetting where the rest of us are richens it up from stock to where the Blast is running pretty good.

All that being said, you might be able to get away with the stock jetting, and just read the plugs after a high altitude run. All it will do is do is run rich, it won't hurt anything other than possibly foul the plug. After you make modifications check to see how things are running and go from there.

As far as drilling the 1/8 inch hole in the slide vacuum port, will only raise the slide earlier possibly causing a bog when you hit the throttle. I have opened mine to .100 on both Blasts, and have not noticed much difference. Stock was around .089

If you go to 1/8 let us know how it feels.

Do a search for aircleaners / air filters / intake. EZ uses a velocity stack with a filter. EZ also has a post about modifying the stock airbox. Someone here is running a filter for a big twin Harley that looks really nice and tucks in well. There is the Buell pro-series intake but I think it is out of production. Also you should be able to find a thread here about a home made intake that the pro-series looks like, this post has pictures and part numbers.

GOOD LUCK and keep us posted on your mods!

Go here, look half way down the posts for a bike that has black / white speckled ... "marble" looking paint and read the following posts about his air cleaner assy.

Ramflo 400 series has also been used successfully - I prefer the stack myself - lol - stock jetting at that altitude is probably good to go!

the plug looks fine "coffee with creamer color " I own a 1200 sporty and i just bought this bike for my wife. she rode it for a little bit but it needed a new tire so i took off the rear wheel and have been able to play with it. I modified the air box like was suggested. BTW if anyone wants to have a loud bike just chop off 1.5 inches of the back of the stock exhaust pipe. It also seems to have increased throttle response. Any other mods that may be suggested?

Hi All,
Sure do appreciate your input and links. I too live at altitude, 6,035 FT here in Colorado Springs. I did the air box mod and put in a K& N filter. Ran way lean. Acted like I was running out of gas. Switched back to the old filter and it ran a lot better. I'll stop in this weekend and pick up jets, 44 & 170 if I'm reading things right. What's this about drilling holes?? Thanks,

Your gonna love Colorado! Well, when there isn't ice or sand all over the streets.....
Honestly though, you can just pick a direction and go! Twisties to the west and long, (very fast) strait stretches to the east.

I was there when they had that Blizzard - before that 70 years went by - lucky me - lol

Hey Ez,
Before you come out, take a look at a local Buell club that's starting to take. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Altituderiders /
Great folks, anyone on any bike is welcome but the links and technical info is all Buell. Folks who love to ride because we love to ride, not just to be seen. Love to have you at a gathering if you make it out here.
