...for body work, that is. I just picked up another Blast and I need suggestions. The following was also posted in the KV...

Has anyone had any success removing paint from Blast or XB body parts? I can't seem to find any info in the KV on it. I know that once it's removed I can polish small or medium scratches out, but how to start? I don't want to to anything that will fog the plastic beyond repair. The paint I need to remove is THICK!

HELP

Bret

There is no paint on the plasic - the color runs through the plasic with decals for the graphics - they peal off.

Yes Dupont Surlyn...impregnated plastic. What I meant was that the previous owner painted it and I want to strip it.

You may find it peals right off depending on their prep work. I do know a couple guys who've done some paint & strip, but I dont remember who they are.
Naustin, a former Blast owner who now posts elsewhere on Badweb(tuber owner now) I think did some paint work. You might want to email him.

A 'search' will bring up his posts and you can email him from there.

well i had to touch up a part of my tank skin a while back and repainted the plastic. it turned out ok and i didnt even use primer. just black glossy and clear coat.

and no the blast plastics are not painted. so you can polish the plastic to a point just like you can most any peice of shiny plastic, novus plastic polish is a good one, there are also quite a few good car polishes for clear coat polishing that can work well also.

if the blast cover happens to be already painted it may be hard to easily remove, chemical paint strippers may damage the plastic depending on what you use. i would sand old paint off and start from freashly sanded plastic, then you could be shure all plastics are smooth for some primer paint and clear, i might do some paint work this winter.

Has anyone found a chemical paint stripper/remover that won't damage the buell plastics? The previous owner of my blast decided to paint everything red and did a shit job at it. I would love to take my 2000 Blast back to its original black...

If it is plasti dip or a similar product (liquid rubber in a spray can) it peels off pretty easily. Just pick at the edge with a credit card until it starts to peel up. Cheap paint should just crack and chip if you bend the plastics around a little. Good luck, and sorry if you already tried that.

Havent tried it so I'll give it a go when I get home. The tank cover is already off so I'll try it there first. Thanks for the quick response!

The paint must be of higher quality - it'll scrape off but only with abrasive things. So should I just take sandpaper to it?

You'll never get the shine back unfortunately.
If nobody has any ideas, you might just end up smooth sanding it and painting it gloss or matte black.

it's such a waste when somebody paints over black with so many stock colors available and black being the most highly sought after. He could have traded the black for another colour. Or better yet, sold the black, bought another Colour and had money left over!!!!

I'll probably make it my project once riding season is ending to get the black back. Oh well, it just means I have to spend that much more time with my blast : ).
