Cwizzle - It's a homemade part that came from the 1st owner. I really like the "geometry" of it, but it's too flexible - especially the left side, because of the material removed for the switch cutout. Being aluminum, it WILL eventually fail, and probably with little or no warning, and at the worst possible time. For that reason plus a couple other minor problems, I'm going to replace it soon. I can't sell it or give it away with a clear conscious, which means I'll just use the metal for other things where death is not such a likely consequence.

I've been working on an improved design for the replacement, and I think it's going to be much better. It'll probably be a month or so before it's finished, but I'll definately post pictures in the "handlebar" thread. I won't know how much time and money it takes to produce until it's finished, but just let me know if you're still interested then.

Yep - it'll lock to either side and still have clearance.

For that price you might as well get the Westach - lol - However, I could ask Brian for you if it will work on a Single - I know the owner of StreetFighters in SF - if your interested.

not really its about $60 cheaper than a Westach is now and you can probably get it a lot quicker. I'm not in the Market yet but by November I should have more Per Diem to blow on my Blast (first up are B50's). Ahh Streetfighters...I have been surfing their site for years if I ever have win the lottery my first stop will be there with a 748 to turn into a streetfighter

Berki: the dashes do break over time!

I have found that several of the ignition manufacturers (IE: Crane) make a tach adapter for twins that have converted to single fire ignition (no wasted spark). That may be an easy way to use tachs from a twin on the Blast.

I havent fully checked it out yet though.

I think DustyJacket's dash is great! But did I miss something? I didn't see any details on where you found it or how you fabricated it. Could you, DustyJacket, or anyone supply some details on getting a dash like that one?

Also...can anyone clarify which wire to tap into at the ignition module for a tach pulse? The pink wire goes to the negative side of the coil so I'd think that would be the one but DustyJacket said something about making a mistake taping into the pink wire. Another thread somewhere suggested a brown wire is the one to use. Any guidance?

I think the mistake was in soldering, not which wire was tapped.

Three wires at the coil: power +(white/black), ground -(black), and ignition module (pink).
That tells me only pink is getting the ignition pulse.

The brown wire is when using a Screaming Eagle ignition module (I assume Crain is the same).

I got the dash on eBay, there is one there now. They must be popular because the price keeps rising. See:
http://stores.ebay.com/BILLET2RACE_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

Yes, tap into the pink. I messed up by pulling the pin out of the connector, and then soldering too close to the pin to put it back into the connector. Then I messed with it so much trying to de-solder the wires that I broke it.

I finally just replaced the last 3 inches of the pink wire, soldered everything back together, waterproofed it, and put the pin back in.

Dusty -- thanks! I just ordered the dash. Can you tell us what you've learned about where to find -- and the colors of -- other wires, like ground, and a power wire for any instrument backlight?

By the way, did you run a wire back to the connector at the ignition module, or is there something to tap into right up front?

Thanks for your help!

I tapped into all three wires at the coil. It has everything you need, power, ground, and coil negative. Tach is not powered when your thumb switch is off if you hook it up this way. I didn't bother with the high/low dimmer wire (Dakota Digital Tach). Works like a champ!

Dusty --

What is the model number of the Westach? I just talked to a supplier who got Westach on the line and, for the 2" 1-8K white face with black markings tach, they quoted me 5-6 weeks deliver but only $87.95 for the black one, or $129.80 for the chrome. I gather this is less than what others having been paying so I'm not sure they are quoting for the correct tach.

Also -- can you tell us what the actual diameter of the tach hole in the billet dash is? I'm wondering if other tachs will fit; another standard size, for example, is 2 5/8"

Any help with this information will help greatly - - - thanks!

I'm sure the part number is in the archives of this topic - you could do a search as well. I know - I posted it.
Here it is!

$87.95 WOW! Get that in writing! 5-6 weeks is right. Ask for the needle to be painted black with a red tip, it'll be easier to see. Light kit is extra (but not much).
The last chrome one on ebay went for over $200!!!

Sorry, I was away.
I tapped the orange/white (accessory) wire going into the speedo for power, and the black for ground, then took off the fuel tank and ran one wire along the backbone to the deutche connector on the left side just above the left of the airbox, alongside the backbone. (There are photos in the service manual).

Here is what I got from Pete at Westach:

> Hi Bill
> The 2CTAU8-2Z-NCW ( we added the "N" ) is $194.70. The light kit 186
> is $5.80. Shipping UPS ground I would guess at $8-$10. We charge as it
> comes off the scale. We will have to build this for you so allow 5 weeks
> after placing your order.

it is 2 and 1/16 inch in diameter.
Also, this one is called a 500 - 8000

Thanks, Dusty and all. I think I'll go ahead and order it Monday. I was given the quote by Aircraft Spruce & Specialty (aircraftspruce.com) -- they gave me a quote number to refer to when I order. The sales person had the Westac person on the line and she confirmed we were talking about the "2'" 1-8K automotive tach; they even wanted to know the make and model of my Blast. Still, I think I'll confirm everything when I order. As you know, they are made to order and they accept no returns. They quoted me $129.80 on the chrome one. Under the circumstances I think at $87.95 I'll take it in black. As I mentioned earlier the billet dash is on the way. It's no longer listed on Ebay and considering the "hard to get" message strings, I sent the dash guy an e-mail message asking if he had any more; we'll see if he responds. PayPal has confirmed that the seller has shipped so it looks like I've got the dash piece in place. I'm still wondering, though, if there's another tach out there with a 2 1/16 body that would work and be available is less than 5-6 weeks. I'll do some more looking around over the weekend. I'll let you all know if I find anything. There are some candidates out there, but I'll have to call the retailers to confirm dimensions.

Okay. I think I found another tach that will fit the Ebay billet dash (2 1/16"). It is simply referred to as the "Micro Mini Instruments" tach at J & P Cycles (http://www.jpcycles.com/search.aspx?Page=5&search=tachometer&store=Harley). It has a 48mm body and a 52 mm bezel -- should slip right in. J & P Tech Support says it will work on the Blast's single cylinder ignition. White face, black pointer. $129.99 same as the quote I got for the chrome Westac but no 5-6 week wait -- it's available immediately, shipped via USPS Priority for three day delivery service.

Now let's hope there are no surprises -- and it works. Worst case, J & P has a very good return policy...

Well, whatever else, the tach from J&P Cycles just arrived at my mailbox - very fast deivery. It came in a box imprinted "Nova MMB - Messtechnik / Made in Germany." A sticker on the box says "Genuine Zodiac Performance Products for Harley-Davidson"

At best, I won't be able to get to the install before Sunday, maybe as late as Mon or Tues. The chrome plating looks excellent. No logo or anything on the face (oh, actually, a tiny "MMB" at the bottom of the dial), just crisp black needle and numbers. White face is virtually identical shade of white to stock Blast Speedo -- numbers look quite similar: excellent "match" with speedo; it looks "stock."

Let's hope for no problems. Pray for me. Or whatever you do. I'll report back later...

Ez, Dusty, anyone -- I'm knee deep in the tach install but it's not clear how to remove the speedo unit from the stock dash. Do you pry the chrome speedo bezel upward? Is there some trick to this? For the moment I'm going to try to pry up the bezel...

Your advice is important! Thanks!!

See page 7-60 of the repair manual.
If you have removed the 2 screws holding the speedo in "use liberal amounts of glass cleaner as a lubricant" and slowly work the speedo out.

You've got the speedo which is encased in a rubber mount which fits into the dash. All 3 will separate.
