Well, thanks to all those who responded to my earlier posts, but it looks like this just isn’t going to happen.

I drove out to Biggs Harley today. After getting over the shock of “Wow, I’m actually in a Harley dealership with the intention of purchasing something,” I started looking for a space not occupied by chrome and tassles.

It took me a while to find the Buells- amidst a sea of glittering cruisers there were but three Lightnings huddled together in an outward-facing circle, off by themselves near the back of the shop. My first impression was that they looked a bit like cornered animals in a defensive formation, weary of their surroundings. I think the headlights had something to do with it, but I could sympathize with them at any rate. Now, I’d called two weeks ago and they said they’d be getting some Blasts in last Wednesday. Figured three days was enough time to get a few un-crated and on the showroom floor- surely they hadn’t sold them already.

So I loitered around in the vicinity of the XBs for a while, feeling somewhat ignored. Finally walked over to the accessories counter and asked the lady there if perhaps the Blasts were still lying in wait behind closed doors. She said that there was but one, a customer’s bike back in the garage. So we went back and sure enough, an ’01 that looked like it had recently been dropped- hard. Ie: the shift peg was bent over about 90 degrees.

She let me roll it out and sit on it, and as soon as I sat down, I was heartbroken. You know how the bear rides the little tricycle at the circus? That’s about what it felt like. Now granted, on the way to Biggs I’d stopped in at a few other dealers and wrapped my legs around the latest offerings from Tokyo and Shizuoka, but this was something else. My 250 Nighthawk felt like a V-Rod compared to this.

On the way out I did take the opportunity to perch myself upon an XB9SX, and I was actually kinda surprised by how good it felt. I’d probably want to raise the bars just a tad, but overall pretty sweet. Only problem is I’m not quite ready to shell out $9000 for one.

Oh well. I’ve still got my eyes on a couple of Japanese alternatives. Right now it’s looking like a tossup between the Suzuki SV650 and (I never thought I’d hear myself say this) the Ninja 650R.

Joe,

I'm not too suprised that a Blast didn't fit you, but thanks for stoping back by. You've described yourself as a big guy, and the Blast really is a small machine. Though I'm suprides that it felt smaller than the Nighthawk. Those are small bikes too. Did the Blast have a low or tall seat on it?

If you can handle an older used bike, you might want to look into a well maintained tube framed Buell like an M2. Most M2's can be picked up used for about the price of a new Blast.

Joe:

Totally solvable problem dude. . . you are afflicted with what is know as "Big Buell Blast Seating Synchronization Syndrome". Buell dealers are well versed in this and periodically flown to an undisclosed location for training.

Do you know Jerry Johnson?

If not, you need to meet him. He's right there in your neighborhood and specializes in precisely the problem you're facing.

There is no need for you to suffer. Drop me a note with how to contact you and I'll arrange an appointment with the Doctor.

Fear not . . . there is a cure and you'll be fine before you know it!

COURT!
Welcome to OUR BLAST BOARD! LOL!
I wasn't sure if you lurked here or not.
Are you going to the Daves Deal ride in May?
I am planning on going, if you need anything while you are traveling through the heart of Michigan let me know.
The Big Kid is like 6' 2" and 200lbs and rides a Blast just fine.

5' 11", 220lb, size 12 combat boots. My Blast! fits me just fine, too! Once I drop about 40 pounds, I'll be able to ride 95 instead of barely 85 or so.
