Sounds good. Runs very clean. Has a good note....not very loud until you twist the loud knob. Even then not too loud, just a good deep thump. It was suggested that I just open up the rear of the muffler and allow the exhaust to bypass the tri-pass setup, but, I didn't like how that sounded and after opening up the muffler, I saw why. The center tube directly from the head pipe has very little perforation and very little sound damping. Just my opinion.....Kenny

Does it affect the drain plug for the tranny?

What is a money-free way to improve airflow through the stock exhaust for a person who doesn't have any welding equipment? How 'bout putting nail holes through the sides near the rear?

The Buellistic mod is as close as you get.

If I remember correctly a 1 5/8 inch hole in the end of the muffler opposite from the stock outlet.

Here are some thoughts on the stock muffler:

It is shaped nicely.

I would assume that if the factory designed the primary size and length that it must be optimal?

The stock muffler is too long.

The stock muffler is way too heavy.

Yep yep...

Another thing to consider is after market exhaust have larger diameter header pipes, that will improve flow (for the most part)when the throttle is mostly or all the way open.

This will help provide more power in the higher rpm range but will decrease torque (which is what actually pushes vehicles forward) in the lower rpm range. Your torque curve is "moved" from lower to higher rpm's.

When the throttle is partially open, the smaller Stock diameter pipe is better at utilizing the smaller pulses from each exhaust stroke to "pull" the next pulse out of the exhaust, because of the vacuum between each pulse.

But at wide open throttle, when the pulses are larger in volume, the larger diameter pipe works better at this.

So, the Buellistic mod is good by providing a more free flowing exhaust because the distance the pulses have to travel is shorter (less friction). And the smaller diameter header is retained so you still keep most of the lower rpm torque.

Youll need to rejet the carb (cheap easy upgrade) to keep from running too lean.

In the end you may not end up with the highest possible HP you can get as with an after market exhaust, but you will get a more onry sound, and a more snappy feel.

1 5/8" is correct !!!

Full spec:

The SWAN EX. SYS. in the SITE pictures still has the OEM Head to Muffler with exhaust wrap on it ...

The current one on my BLAST has a 1 3/4" Head to Muffler which is off a BIG TWIN(front exhaust headpipe) ...

You will notice that the Muffler is painted to look like a chin fairing ...

The paint "i" used is HIGH TEMPETURE Paint which was purchased at the local AUTO PARTS Store ...

You should have noticed the O2 sensor fitting on the lower portion of the head to muffler ...

This is where "i" attach the O2 sensor for the FUEL/AIR METER so "i:" can do REAL WORLD carbuerator tuning ...

This Guess Work "OR" so and so said to run this jetting just does not get it when dealing with a BLAST which needs every ounce of power it can get ...

Unless you're able put some real work into it, dont bother. You're likely to just end up with a loud stock exhaust or worse yet, a loud stock exhaust that performs worse than stock.

Save your money and keep your eye out for a deal. They are out there.

Thanks again for the great response from the forum. I made a smaller hole on the right side, basically the same place as the Buellistic(TM) mod, but probably 1/3 the size. I like the sound change. It sounds more like my friend's Harley VROD with a more airy tone. The sound before was more of a growl. Not sure if that makes much sense to someone else, but the VROD is the closest explanation I can think of (at least his VROD which may be customized). I doubt it had any improvement anywhere, but I do like the sound more.

I also just cut a hole in the other side about the same size as the existing stock hole...it was mentioned to rejet...is that a MUST and if you do, what jet sizes should you use?

P.S. it sure did add some volume to the exhaust...hopefully the cops don't think it's to loud....

See the carburetor section of thousands of posts on jetting. Buellistic did what you did, and took it a step further.

Just a little tidbit. I put the stock exhaust back on after ripping off my Jardine on the railroad tracks and it rattled bad at ~2500rpm. SO, put a little strip of header wrap between the strap around the muffler by the kickstand and the muffler. No more rattle. It was tight enough without it that it did not feel at all loose when tugging/tapping on it, but it rattled at one spot of rpms.

Just a thought if you are chasing a rattle in that area.

The stock is really really quiet.: ) I'd forgotten that.

I was just looking for a 1 3/4" headpipe for the raceBlast so I could try out a more traditional (Buellwise) exhaust without pulling the one off the streetBlast.

I'm back! After a long absence I've returned to the forums to converse with the fellow Blastards. Since we can talk all we want at the upcoming SLO ride, I'll start right into my question. After having such a fun time riding EZ's monster Blasts, I decided I wanted a similar sound production like the Force has, but I don't have money at the moment to fork out for a full fledged project (not even $200 at the moment). That's a project for the near future that I can pursue with my arc welder. Meanwhile I cut out about an inch of the back siding where the normal stock exhaust port is just to give a little extra ventilation directly out from the center pipe. I bent this peice back a little bit like a bent tab and that did the trick. It's got the same volume as the Force, though the sound is quite different. At idle, it sounds about the same, but at 1/3+ throttle the sound is crackly and there is a tendency for popping backfire like you hear on the big twin Harleys during gear shifts and deceleration. The question I have for EZ and anyone else is whether there is anything else I could do to give a rounder and smoother tone instead of the crackle tone. The quality of the Force exhaust tone was just right such that it had a deep tone all across the throttle range (at least as far as I tested it at EZ's). I'm thinking about attaching a 90 degree pipe to the center pipe inside the muffler and extending that outwards to the side of the bike. Would this provide a deeper pipe/tube-like tone like I hear on bigger twins? An example of what I'd love is the "2005 Buell Firebolt NO Muffler" video on YouTube. Sure I can't get that Vtwin popping rate, but I like that tube tone that is projected in the video. Perhaps my idea of extended the center stock tube with a 90 degree bend outward would give a nice pipe/tube tone and maybe eliminate some of the crackle. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether that would make any difference? Thanks ahead for your comments.

Toni: Happy to hear you'll be at the SLO ride

I dont really have any advice for your exhaust though, except get a fat drag pipe off a Sportster or Big Twin and modify it to fit. There's also a lot more that goes into an exhaust note than just the pipe. Only so much can be had with a stock engine.

Last week i modified my stock exhaust by cutting an equal sized hole on the opposite side of the muffler from stock. However, I really didn't like the sound. Louder, yes, but very sharp and annoying for a street bike. It almost sounded like a non-muffled exhaust note. I ended up taking a 1 3/4 inch pipe (about 6 inches long) and welding 3 baffles inside of it and welding all of this into the new hole in the muffler. The baffles are semi-circles and face opposite ways, so the exhaust has to go over then under then over before exiting. I made each baffle about 2/3rds the height of the pipe, and they're spaced about 1/2 inch apart. Anyways, I now have a louder and deeper sound than stock, but without the sharp sound I had after just cutting a hole. Best of all, I have more flow than stock. I'd say the new hole flows around half as much as the original hole. I've been able to feel a difference in power just from this change - it definitely likes to rev now!
No jetting change yet, but I think it could use a little more than what it has stock.

Not with the stock exhaust - even with the extra hole, its still only going to move so much air - lol
