Hi, all : ) I just got my '04 Blast yesterday and just registered here (great resource, and nice to "meet" you all). I've already read the FAQs and I did several keyword searches here, but have not found a complete answer to my questions yet (I'm not saying that the answers aren't here somewhere, just that I couldn't find them).

After months of searching, I found a great deal on this bike (unused, 4 miles on it, still at the H-D dealership, $3K) and jumped on it. I am actually the second owner of the bike; it was given away in a raffle and the owner never took it from the dealership. Months later, that owner has sold it to me through a third party seller. I've gone over the bike and it is perfect, truly unused, runs great, etc.

Unfortunately, I do not at this time have the owner's manual and some things that may have come with the bike. So although I am contacting the first owner to see what they may have, for now I just need to know:

1) What is the exact recommended break-in procedure according to the factory/manual?

2) What accessories, if any, come with the bike? How may keys, what manuals/paperwork? Any Tools? Locks? Anything else?

All I have is the bike, 1 key and the title. That's it.

Thank you, everyone... this will allow me to contact the seller and ask him to have the actual owner produce these items.

You Buellers rock...

-Pete

Welcome Pete!

1)Break in: For the first 100 miles, do not excered 50MPH, try to shift at or berfore 15, 25, 35 and 45 MPH, Shift down at 40, 30, 20 and 10. This is to keep the engine RPM below 2500.
Fot until 500 miles, keep the bike under 55 Mph, and you can stretch the shift points a little more, you are supposed to keep the bike under 3000 RPM (I know it's a little tough without a tach). Drive slowly while the engine warms up (firt couple of miles) and do not run at constant RPMs, vary your RPM.

It may sound tedious, but I have found that following the break in procedure will help with oil consumption. BYW, check you're oil frequently during break in, the Blast is known to conume a LOT (1/2 a qt+) of oil during the break in process. I would get a bottle of H-D 20w50 to keep it topped off. Don't overfill the oil either, make sure that the bike it warm and upright while checking oil level. Low to high on the dipstick is like 1/4 of a QT, so don't panic if your oil is really low and dump a qt in there.

2) The Stuff that came with my bike were two keys and an owners manual (not to be confused with a service manual) Mine is part number 99476-02Y, for a 2002. The 2004 manual is probably not much different, nothing has really changed with the Blast in the last 6 years. Assuming that a 2004 specific manual was made, try part number 99476-04Y.

Welcome P3Pete!
Definitely get a repair manual. The Blast is really easy to work on (if it ever needs work), but it will be invaluable if you decide to modify and for the minimal maintenance.
Check e-bay for deals on owners & repair manuals (might be faster than getting one from a dealer).

PS During break-in mileage do not let it sit and idle forever at start up (or anywhere) and avoid sitting in rush hour traffic.
About a minute is all it should need for warm up when cold starting.

Thanks a lot, guys. James, thank you for the especially detailed break-in and oil spec info. That will come in handy immediately.

I'm totally with you guys as far as getting a repair manual goes. I already downloaded the PDFs last night for the '02 Blast repair manual which was posted/linked somewhere on this forum. I'll look for a full paper version anyway. I'm assuming that there are very little, if any real differences between the '02 and '04 manuals, since the bike is essentially unchanged.

Still, if any of you guys know of anyplace online where complete Owner's Manuals as well as tech manuals can be found, please let me know.

Joining this group was a great idea... thanks for the super-fast feedback!

-Pete

P.S. If any Buellers want to ride in the NY Metro/Tri-State area, let me know...

Personally, I would try this method. I do not see where it will do any harm to your engine.
I think the critical point is, is to load the engine so that the rings have a chance to seal.
Try this link:

First off, thanks everyone for a really great place to find info for the Blast. (Just got my Pirelli's per the info I saw on this board).
anyway...
Your link to "mototune" refered to "warming the engine up completely"... I didnt see a specific time though. We used to use a 20 minute idle time after refresh for gokarts, Then cool down, then go like a bat! Seemed to work for them... (always seemed like an "against the grain" sorta breakin, but it sure proved it's worth.)
Soooo, has anyone "here" tried this breakin? Gotten better oil consumption? Yada, yada.
Inquiring minds want to know?!?!

"Assuming that a 2004 specific manual was made, try part number 99476-04Y."

confirmed - the 2000 Blast owners manual is p/n 99476-00Y. Found it here:

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/harleyhog3/06lit_cust.pdf

to whoever uploaded that service manual: I love you, man!

The parts manual has all the part numbers (duh!), but what I really find most useful about it is the exploded views of everything. I got one on ebay for $10. With that and the service manual, you have all the info needed to service & repair a Blast.

I didn't get an owners manual either - would it be worthwhile to get one?
