Ok, I am new to the Blast but have some issues, I have two 03 Blasts, one is my girlfriends and the other is a friend who just moved to Colorado(She also has a 9r and will be traveling back here to the Atl often so she wanted a bike here). Now I put new bars on hers(stock S bars) and then we went out for a ride, no problems. A couple nights later we head out to the Vortex for bike night, roughly 30 miles, on the way home the bike started to lose power and finally stalled, on the side of the road if you turned the key off and then back on it would POP but not run, eventually nothing at all, I got the bike back at my place and started checking, I have no spark but am pretty sure I have fuel, the manual calls for so many special HD tools I am having a hard time performing checks, Has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you find? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Loose plug or wire, battery connection - with no spark it definately sounds electrical.

The pop, but not run, is indicative of a bad module. Many times, like a bad coil, it will come back when the bike cools down. Also, try leaving the key on (while watching) for about 5 minutes, you may find it pops again. IF it is the module it can drive you nuts with a lot if strange symptoms.

PS since you have 2 Blasts you can swap (like coils) some parts easy enough to find the problem. The module is not so easy to switch though. (replace yes, swap no)

I have power at the coil but no fire, I need to test the bank angle sensor as well, without the Harley breakout box I dont know what wires to check though. I let it cool down for about two days and still no spark.

You shouldnt need the 'breakout box' to follow the wiring diagram. The bank angle sensor is an on/off switch and I'm guessing it either cuts power to the coil or cuts the ignition 'pulse' from the module, I'm betting its power. It should be fairly easy to bypass all the safety switches.
Try swapping coils. The coil from your 12R may even fit.
Sorry I dont have time right now to consult the manual to be more help.

At least yours is a total failure. Mine is intermittant, when hot. I am going to swap out the coils and go for a ride as soon as the Big Kid gets home with it from Grandmas.

I just replaced the ignition module on the yellow Blast and it finally runs the way it is supposed to. I swapped coils, carbs and checked everything but to no avail. It cured the intermittant/no spark, loss of power, and backfires.

From my testing it looks like the ignition module is the culprit, I will pick one up and throw it in and see how it goes.

Here is my Buell Blast war story. The other day I jump on my bike and blast up to a town about 50 miles away. When I get back on the bike to go home it cranks but wont start. What a great feeling that is! After about an hour of fiddling around I find the problem. The top of the stock spark plug screws on to a threaded fitting.(What idiot designed this?) The engine vibes had, over time, caused the top to come loose and was still lodged in the spark wire clip, but was no longer contacting the plug. Using needle-nose pliers I retrieved the top, screwed it back, popped on the plug wire and was off. The moral of the story is if your bike wont start and everything looks fine, check the spark wire. P.S. I an upgrading to a platinum plug that has a solid top that can't come off.

Welcome to the Badweb Luckdragon!

I have upgraded my spark plug caps to an NGK variety, just cut the old one off, screw the new one onto the wire, remove the threaded filler cap off the top of the sparkplug and pop the new one in place. Then forget about it because it stays on really well.

Thank you, Swampy, for welcoming me to the site. I forgot to mention that I flooded the bike by continually cranking it while trying to find the problem, so, it did not start as soon as I had fixed the plug. I then un-snapped the air box cover without removing it and placed a ballpoint pen in the crack to create an airway. The bike then fired up as soon as I hit the starter. I mention this in case some other poor soul has this problem

I am having a problem with my 06 Blast. It tipped over about 6mo ago. I took the battery cables off and let stand. When I hit the key everything seems ok. It took out the plug to check for spark and I am not getting any. I have 12 volts to the coil but not sure if could would be bad or maybe the bank angle sensor.

Where is the BAS located so I can try to bypass? I do not have a shop manual for this bike. Got it for the 12X but not the blast. Any help would be welcome.

Thanks,
Brian

The BAS is towards the back of the battery, just on the other side of the frame rail (that runs side to side), just under on the right side. You'll notice the very front of the tail section has a cutout that fits around the BAS.
Sorry, I dont have time to post a picture, but I think your on the right track and my guess is the 12xhas the same BAS, so its probably wired the same.
If you dont know (but I think you do) the BAS is a 'smart switch' and wont turn the ignition back on until the power is switched off.
You might also want to check the kickstand switch too. Jump the 2 wires together.

Thanks Gear. I did not think about the kick stand. I saw the switch last night while finally getting a chance to look at the bike. I will look for the BAS tonight. I hope I get it going. The 12X is out of commission due to a failed clutch cable and found the lever is also damaged. So trying to get one bike running so I don't have to drive the guzzler around.

I had the same problem on my 99 X-1 Lightning, turned out to e a short in the sidestand switch. The bike was still under warranty at the time, and the mechanic recommended removing the sidestand switch permanently, so I would never have that problem again.

Thanks for the Tips guys! I found that it is the BAS. I took out the connector and jumped the green and yellow wires together and the old girl sparked right up. You guys are great for knowledge!!
