Tripper, I would never give up the hand guards, I love 'em. It's a trivial mod to mount the bar ends such that the handguards are unchanged, I have pictures here somewhere.

Basically, you just drill a hole through the factory plug (which the hand guards snap onto) in the bar ends, and use that plug as a spacer on the screw that mounts the bar ends. You may need to scare up a slightly longer screw then the one that came with the mirrors to make this work.

It's a no brainer for the 3rd eye mirrors.

Court, are you going to think about the Iron Butt in 2005? It sounds like you're already practicing for some long distance touring on the CityX. Last time there was only one Buell and it was an S3T, it would be great to have some XB representation. You could get some great material for stories from that experience.

"The "constraint", and there are ways to deal with it, is fuel capacity."

Yep. And there are ways to deal with it, but we shouldn't have to. ; )
Thanks for sharing the ride.

Don't know if that thing is new or a factory demo, but my fuel economy went up significantly after break in was complete.

It was not a huge difference on paper, but made a big difference in the annoyance factor of the smaller tank.

Frankly, it really wasn't an annoyance but rather a reminder of just how quickly the miles had passed.

I did the same thing yesterday and darn near ended up in CT.

I DO love the hand guards. Will be ordering a set for my S1 to complement the heated handgrips and electric underwear.

No riding tonight, just doing some milk crate time. But since folks seem to like the pics, thought you'd enjoy a glimpse out the window.

Like it or not, there is no place like New York CITYx at night!

Court-I enjoyed reading about your first ride on the City X. I don't know what it is about the City X. This bike is so magical, it is a joy to ride. The fuel injection is seam less. It always seem's to be on the power band. I am having so much fun with bike it's unreal.

Ferris-Thanks for sharing that story. I look forward to riding with you soon. P.S. I understand that in Feb. Long Beach BMW is holding a Battletrax. Come on down and take home a 1st place trophy to add to your Battletrax wall of fame!

Mr Canfield,
I too have an XB9, and know what you speak to be true.
I have had mine for a year April, and about to hit 30,000 miles. The Ride continues day after day.
After a rough week last week, and reading this and a few other stories of The Ride, I decided to take the long way into work Monday, so I left early enough to hit my favorite back roads on the way into the city.
Well to make a long story short, it's Tuesday morning and I just now made it in to work...
Maybe a lunch time ride...

Boy do I understand! This bike just grabs me somewhere between gofastamus and my emotioasophia!

I just heard someone in another office mention it's supposed to be warmed in NYC Friday. I started coughing....my "pre-feigned-sickness" theater. It gets over 40, I am acutely ill!

This thought came to me a in conversation today...

The M2 is the best bike ever made, and I can prove it. And the 9sx is even better ; )

Yes, yes....that's accurate.

Precisely the reason that I accurately employed the word "made" denoting past present tense.

Time, tide and tenacity have conspired to allow Erik Buell to design and build a bike better than he'd been able to or thought he would be able to.

The M2, arguably "one of the best" when it was produced remains high on that list, to this day, owing thanks to the very qualities that put it there.

It is joined by the Xb's.

No one, even you my geek-head little friend knew what your TRS-80 would grow up to be someday. Long gone are the days that Erik Buell loaded the old Compaq with the 286 processor in the trunk of the Audi allowing him to work on Jefferson during the day and at home (on a project many of you have surmisiated) at night.

This little laptop that I just used to pry the desk drawer open has many times the fire power of the computers of 3 years ago.

As has been said...."a rising tide carries all ships". As a result of technical advances, Buell is now able to produce one of the most reliable and technically advanced motorcycles every produced. Other manufacturers have benefited as well...with more powerful computers they are able to watch and marvel at Buell in real time.

The folks at Buell have EARNED it....they worked hard to get here.

Wait a minute....does the XB go on my list yet? That remains to be seen, but like a date walking from the house to a car in the "right stuff", it's off to a great start.

Questions?

: )

And just to be clear, I am not slamming the tubers. There is not a time when I have not looked at a picture of one and not missed my M2 (that I had to trade in to get the 9sx).

Not that I have ever regretted the trade in decision for a second, I haven't, should have done it the instant I laid eyes on the first 9sx.

But that does not mean I don't miss my beloved M2, and it does not mean that I am not trying to find who buys it so I can try and get it back from them when they have had their fun with it, and it does not mean that I won't get a trashed S1 10 years from now to loving rebuild from the ground up. After I get a DR-650. While still riding the 9sx daily.

Fine times to be a rider indeed!

Aww crap. Now you guys did it. As you will recall, my dealer to whom I traded in my M2 put it up on ebay, and got a deadbeat bidder (no suprise, thats why I let them mess with it instead of trying to do it myself).

So y'all got me thinking, and I went looking to see if they relisted it yet. There it sits, auction closes in 3 hours.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4510972809&fromMak eTrack=true

Item number 4510972809

Nearly brings a tear to my eye. Lots of great memories with that bike, they even left my Deals Gap sticker on the flyscreen : )

Current high bidder has bought parts for Guzzi's and an Honda Hawk GT in the past, sounds like a perfect buyer. Hope either he, or some true blue Bueller picks it up.

Do it Steve! It is a great runner, lots has been broken, but it's all been fixed. The isolators should probably be replaced, and that is the original belt, and there is a minor leak back around the starter that I tried (and failed) to fix. Just enough for a small spot of oil to accumulate every 1500 miles or so. I just wiped it with a paper towel with every oil change and left it alone. There is a slight chance there is a back base gasket leak contributing to that oil pool as well, but it has been stable since I got the bike at 3000 miles (more then 20k miles ago).

Banke shifters, supertrapp exhaust, napolean bar ends, polished headers, decent rubber (MeZ4 on front, MeZ6 on back). Forcewinder, properly ground out, carb rejetted to 45 slow jet (already had 200 main jet) and air fuel mixture screw set correctly.

Minor (hard to spot) repaired rash on the tank, slight bend in left handlebar, but nothing obvious or that would effect riding.

Ridden hard, but carefully maintained. No wheelies (I am chicken) or stoppies (they never felt safe on the M2, unlike the Xb, where they seem natural as breathing). And I know better then to spin the thing up to redline and leave it there.

Two minor lowsides on it (one at about 15 mph and *full* lean onto smooth pavement, and one at just about a full stop while in a ditch) with no serious damage... those are original bars so you know they could not have been that bad. One tipover in a parking lot by previous owner that needed new lever, turnsignal, and shifter.

Court:

Tech:

I can remember that on the XB12 changes were made to help with emissions Angle and type of injector. The 05 XB9 series do they have similar changes. How does the injection system work in the real world in the cold, stutter or smooth? Things along this line.

Of course your own way of adding color is always appreciated.

They were the best I had on the Cyclone, great profile for nice linear turn in, great wear, good wet, dry, cold or hot.

Knowing what I know now though, I would give the new Pirelli Scorpions a try now if I were doing it again.

You know, the ones that come stock on the XB9SX City Cross.

There! I knew I could bring myself back on tangent for this thread ; )

Court,

Congrats on the on the City, lookin forward to reading more of the adventures you will be having on it.

Also I noticed that you had some hot pixles in the photo above. There is a nice firmware update for the Nikon 950. The URL (sorry its so ugly)is to the firmware update that you can apply via the compact flash card. I was having issues with hot pixles on my 950 and the update took care of em.
