Erik entertains at the first American Sportbike Festival, SoCal, Mar. 15, 1997

Court entertains at the same event by cruising in fashionably late to the above lunch stop wearing a 'Stich that's so freshly rashed from contact with pavement it's still smoldering. (Is that Steve Slaughter standing behind you?)

Later that same day, at Willow Springs International Raceway, Court decides trashing ONE Aerostich already today is one 'Stich too many and climbs on something a little more his speed.

Erik presents Court with the "Curious George" t-shirt...kinda the Buellish equivalent of the Scarlet Letter...

Moments later Erik practices reaching for the kill switch on the BLURR (a skill he would put to good use very shortly):

I always wanted to meet Fran Crane, but she died before I ever got the chance.

I never heard Jimi Hendrix play live, either.

Fran was very tired; this was about 3/4 through the rally, and she'd just found out when she arrived in Yakima that her friend and IBR legend, Ron Major, had died during the rally.

She was gracious, we kept our visit to an absolute minimum (we were all SO excited to cheer her on), and, honestly, it was with an equal mixture of envy and pity that I watched her head out into the dark that night to tackle the last leg of the rally - the IBR is a monster.

I had several interactions with Fran over a short period of time; believe it or not, she gave me the AOL software disc I used to get online for the very first time (when I was spinning up PACBOG). She was one of our featured guests at Blue Groove/Northwest in July of '97, along with Erik, of course, and Court.

I spoke at her memorial service in SoCal. I hadn't planned to, but when Walter - her devoted partner of many years - asked if anyone else wanted to say a few words, I could swear I heard Fran say to me, "Don't be afraid, get up there and say something!" : )

I did, and was not at all eloquent. But I spoke my heart. I had a recent e-mail conversation with Mike Kneebone, and recounted the above to him. He replied, "Yeah, Fran was really good at not feeling sorry for any of us and motivating the world. One in a million for sure. And thank you for having the courage to stand up and speak. I was still so shaken, I could hardly even talk."

She was a special lady, and I knew her just the teeniest little bit.

For extra points . . . see if you can read the chrome graphics on the tail section of the Blackbird.

:-)

The lady in the front row was . . . somebody Shuy. Charlie, I call him Chuck, could straighten that out.

There's . . at least a chance that the lovely D took that photo . . . it not, it may have been Chris's wife.

What a legendary event that became . . .

Somewhere there is a photo . . . gads I hope time and tide have erased it. . . of me doing a very irresponsible thing on the first S1 Lightning to appear in public. That was the day I rode up to Reg Pridmore's hanger (he was quite the aviator) and brought him up to to speed on the S1, sent him for a spin, and briefed him on what was coming from Buell.

You're recalling Ihly Shue (whereabouts unknown) but I don't think that's her. There was another Asian girl in the group that I met at several Buell demo rides, etc.. but can't recall her name...

>>>You're recalling Ihly Shue

Right you are and . . . as the fog clears . . I also think your are correct that was not her.

If memory serves . . .she was at the "Massive Martin Send-Off" at Phil and Janey K's house . . . when our buddy, complete with full size computer monitor. . . came to the USA to teach school to the American distance riders.

That was the time by LOA Buell was in an airplane being flown to an exhibit I was going to . . . we interrupted then enroute and I collected the bike at an airport in Illinois and brought it to Phil and Janet's

As I recall Martin had an interesting sound system on his Iron Butt bike also.

I recently told the story of him doing the Iron Butt on the 167cc 2-stroke Zündapp and having to keep a piston and cylinder at each stop to change them out. I recall the story of the time he bought fuel in someplace like Montana and had ridden nearly 100 miles, at 2am, before he discovered he'd left his "purse". Serious rider was he. He flew over and went to the 2nd "1st Annual Buell Gathering" (I've been to 3 - "1st Annual" Buell gatherings) in Arkansas. We took Barny and the S2 in the back of the F-150.

That was the event during which we sacrificed 9 Buells to the "gods of guardrails" in the interest of "having fun". It changed the way we did Buell "fun rides" going forward.

I also, recently, told the story of the skill with which you navigated the ST without a rear shock through some of the gnarliest weather either of us has ridden in.

Great times.

There is a rumor going about that you've started a new gig . . . CONGRATULATIONS !

Thanks, just outside BWI airport. Living in an apartment for the first time in FOREVER. Only recently sold that Silver ST and bought a Candy Glory Red '93 with 100K fewer miles on it. The last I heard the '91 was riding out to CO to stay. The guy I sold it to used it as his only vehicle for over a year!
I just got a card from Martin yesterday; he just bought a '92 ST1100, so he's back in the saddle again after a while. He still has a CIS'er Pig Roast every Easter. Open invite to alumni. Mac McCowan, Mike Maughan, and others...

Interesting how few folks . . . remember when the number of websites, in the world, was a tiny number and what we went through . . . with acoustic foam couplers and 2400 baud models to connect.

When I did the LOA I carried a couple tools and a cable with alligator clips. Wasn't unheard of to get into a motel in the wee hours and have to take the phone or wall jack apart . . .try to get a dial tone and then establish a connection to do my "daily travelogue" reports.

Doesn't seem like nearly a quarter century could have passed so quickly !

Lord Mercy! That long??? But what a wonderful quarter century ride. : )
Yes, remember the photo and everyone in it but, I too do not recall the gal's name. Going to send Russ Madsen (in the photo) a link to this. Russ has a remarkable memory for events, names, details, not to mention his way of telling the story. Think you will enjoy.... : )

D:

Little surprise there . . . .I have Russ in pretty much that "Joe Boyd" category of people.

So cool . . . and yes they are amazing memories.

I'll have a story to tell . . . hopefully a couple years from now . . . but, for the present . . . I am reminded daily of how damn lucky so many of us are to have crossed paths.

Give my regards to Russ.

^ Yep. He and I hooked up late last summer; me 'n D were on a month-long w*rking vacation out to Washington and back, and Jim and I got together and spent a full day doing about a 300-mile lap on our motors around Mount Rainier. Crappy day to begin with weather-wise (i.e. normal western Washington conditions...) but sure was fun to ride with him again, in some of our old haunts. He hasn't changed a bit.

Which is a good thing. : )

Jim hasn't changed a bit over all the years I've known him too. I saw him in Franklin over Memorial Day weekend. When I grow up I'd like to have his riding schedule!
