The other thing that's lost with the analogy is that the potential stream of Buell to HD (sport to couch) was being diverted.

The race was won on Rotax, the Barracuda was based on Rotax, and the stock performance bike was based on Rotax. EPA restrictions and design restrictions had taken the XB engines about as far as they could go.

The reality is that HD, through Buell, provided valuable R&D and cred to Rotax. We were proud of HD for the win but we know it was Rotax.

If I was HD and I couldn't work out a deal with Rotax, I'd probably shut her down too. You don't want to build somebody else's empire.

That they refuse to move/sell Buell as an entity speaks volumes to what people in the know thought of the new Buell.

There is an anonymous posting on Badweb stating the 'Cuda was based on the 1125.

In the "Buell that could have been" thread:

quote:

Yes, Barracuda, 1125 based but new from front to back. And that was a steering damper on top of the bars. And it's gone, not to return. That bike is probably in the dumpster now.

Not sure if he means based on the 1125 motor or more generally based on the 1125 motorcycle.
"New from front to back" seems that it would be very loosely based.

I guess it would have to be based on something if it's an 1199 motor in there.

Sorry, Court, I was going off the other thread and some sense of continuity.

But are you hinting at something else?

If it's not a Rotax, and it's probably not HD, what is it?

And if it is HD... whoa.

If you blow up that photo of the Barracuda, on my computer up to 800%, although grainy you can see the bolt pattern on that right side casing, just behind the fairing, in front of his leg, is the same as the 1125.

I'm not saying it isn't . . . just keeping track of the rumor mill.

I'll bet we get to see some high res pics . . . there were simply too many of them taken during testing and development.

"All new" is an understatement and the process this bike went through is more amazing than the bike itself and a singing validation of what the Elves have been dreaming of doing for years.

Imagine . . . close your eyes for a moment . . how you'd feel if you'd been insisting that HD's development process for the XR1200 was "as refined as is possible" and then these upstart rag-tag kids out in East Troy develop a process that results developing a new platform at a fraction of the cost and in less than a 1/3 the time that HD has ever done. . . . and exceeded all the test metrics as various design teams moved information seamlessly among each other to quickly and effectively resolve problems with innovative solutions. . . .just like in the glory days or American Manufacturing . . along the lines of Kelly Johnson's Skunk Works.

What if Buell PROVED that it was possible for a group of AMERICANS to manufacture something better than anyone in the world?

Yeah . . . then you'd sure want to take a 2nd look at those plans you announced, less than 100 days ago, to build a new Buell World Headquarters . . ask some questions as to why Buell grew like 55% while HD grew 9% . . yeah. . .we'd better quick put an end to that before if makes us look bad.

By the way . . . I suspect Buell had some other tricks up their little "Elf Sleeves".

Don't turn the set off . . . movie's not over.

If it's the same as the 1125 then it's Rotax.

At last you finally throw us something palatable. Thank you for the insight, and it sucks by the way. Also more reason to rescue EVERYTHING Buell had / has going on. Great luck.

Court, seeing that the Helicon was Buell designed and funded, does he(Erik) own the rights to those patents? And on the subject of that, since the Sportster went to rubber mount in '04, essentially Buell designed mounting system, does he get a cut of that since they are using his patent? How does that work?

Airbox cover looks larger? Could there be 4 throttle bodies underneath?

Based on previous models, frame constraints, and speculative reasoning on my behalf, I don't believe you will ever see an inline four. Teach either meant v-4 or dual throttle bodies. Probably v-4.

There is a "crease" in the airbox that shows just behind the rider's right elbow that's not on current 1125's:

I vote "Twin" too. And put the difference in styling to just that: a difference in styling. Makes it match the lines of the full fairing better.

+1 Hex. Buell has amazingly avoided ANY "spy" shots of earlier bikes; that one almost had to be deliberate.

BTW- I linked that photo to a post on Cycle World's forum, and the photographer contacted them and requested they take it down. Surely he knows it's linked to hundreds of sites by now.

I don't think it could be a V4. It's been said it was made for WSBK, and 4 cylinders at 1199cc would be against the rules.

Twins can be made up to 1200cc. My vote is either a bored or stroked 1125.
