Just a thought... If anyone had a contact for a magazine now would be the time to contact them. The best bet on keeping Harley from completely killing Buell is getting as many people to see why Buell should go on.

Trust me, the magazine guys already know.

I am an auto journo and work for the same company that owns many of the moto mags.

I am kind of surprised this isn't front page news on Cycle World's website yet.

I buy and sell newspaper and magazine printing equipment for a living. ALL magazine articles are paid advertisements, and ALL newspaper articles sway the reader in the direction the editor wants. The reason I ask for anyone with a contact is I know that articles on this will be written but how will the article sway the reader? Do we want the headline to read "Harley-Davidson cuts Buell to survive in the new economy" or "Harley-Davidson kills Buell, the great American sportbike along with 200 American jobs instead of letting it try and survive on its own"

Indy, thats great! You know which way the article needs to be written.

Maybe someone else can contact another magazine see if they are willing to write an article and what the cost would be for at least a half page would be. Getting magazines involved would be a step in the right direction.

Also e-mailing articles to CNN or other major news networks to see if they pick up the story would do a world of good. If they start receiving different articles from many people regarding the same situation the chances go up they will pick up the story.

ALL magazine articles are paid advertisements

That is an inaccurate statement, and in fact a lie. Sure, there is some of that going on out there, but to say ALL is just not the truth. I have been an automotive journalist for 10 years and have never been told what to say or what story to write.I am free to pick and choose my stories and do have editorial freedom.

Hey, don't crush my illusion that every puff sheet in the cycle trades praises all the bikes from manufacturers that advertise in them. You mean I have to abandon my boycott of Cycle World that began in 1992? 'Course, I flip through it on the rack before denying them my money.

DO NOT get Hardley to "get Buell back."

Get them to allow Buell to go, be sold, anything but be re-absorbed into the flesh of the motherbeast.

Most magazine lead time has already passed. They're waiting for the obit not the intervention.

Need another strategy.

Need something bigger than HD.

Hard to go after political intervention when you've never really accepted it. However that's about the only real recourse left and, muttering aside, you've got a gov't right now that is willing to intervene in some business concerns.

My picture of America has always included a strong HD. Push that message.

So, how do the innovations of BMC's founder keep flowing from his artesian mind spring to the industry? Through Harley as a consultant? Consulting to others? With a new venture or an eleventh hour reprieve in East Troy?

I think the flow question belongs to another thread.

Anyway, typically a company, like HD, has a clause that limits an employee's activities, for a time and an area, once they've been shut down, like Erik. And that's usually confidential.

There's also some confusion, to me, anyway, on our Erik's employment status. It seems he is still employed by HD but, in an interview about a week earlier, he said his contract was not renewed.

No, however, there may be time still left on the contract to honor, since ongoing contracts are usually negotiated comfortably ahead in time for any transitions to go smoothly.
