Hey Court,in typical fashion,I am in need of that which does not exist. In midst of a re-ring of an XR 1000,the condition of cylinder studs are covered in rust & pitted section thru the cast iron cylinder.Dealer search > obsolite.Any chance that in the early days of producing the RR 1000 , someone may have purchased these in bulk and they are sitting around by the gross collecting dust ? Actually my hopes of finding these are somewhat slim but I am hoping a similar stud may have been used in another application,Buell or HD.HD XR/RR 1000 prt no. 11724 cyl stud 7/16" X 9 x/32".Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you,MBC This is a custom bike, engine purchased from factory "parts stock" in '85 and neatly tucked into an early '80's XR 750 frame,a street legal dirttrack replica. Perhaps 1 of the engines that slipped thru EB's fingers. I've got a clip around here somewhere I wanted to share with you.Close your eyes and listen, man,it will take you back and put you right in the middle of it,did me anyway. |

Boy does that question bring back memories . . . I, for about two years, was on a search for:
- An OEM 0.0010 overbore kit for my 1997 XR-1000
- OEM (the black wrinkle) mirrors for my 1977 XLCR
As I traveled the country doing construction jobs I simply walked in local HD dealers and walked up to the parts counter and asked for it like it was something they might have in stock . . . knowing full well there were damn few in the first place and they hadn't been produced in years. Most places I got nothing but blank stares . . . Then . . . .in the same darn week I walk into the dealer in Midwest City, OK . . asked for the over-bored pistons and rings, the guy disappears and reappears the the Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle box!! Wait . . it gets better . . . about 2 weeks later . . . we're in Sacramento (I was doing Arden Fair Mall at the time) for the Sacramento Mile and I walk into Armando Magri's HD on Arden Way . . . ask for the Cafe' Racer mirrors . . . Big John walks back into the stacks . . .comes back with them and say "some guy ordered these, prepaid and never picked them up . . . you can have them". MORAL OF THE STORY: Perseverance is your friend. I'd get the part number you are looking for, find a friendly dealer and have them start running it on HDnet. I'd made darn sure I exhausted those efforts to find it on stock someplace first. After that you'd have to search the aftermarket. If that doesn't work, let me know . . . I know a fellow who can make you anything you need for a rare bike/motor. Have fun . . . . there is no greater sound in motorcycling than the sound of an XR-1000 on the pipe between two concrete "Jersey Barriers" at 0600 in the morning . . . Court |

Thanks Court,I am moved by your efforts.I know the blank stare all to well, the whole thing becomes comical."XR,those are race engines,we don't stock those parts, don't even have a book for XRs". "Yeah,I know,in the back of that XL book you are looking at,there is a section for the XR"."Damn, never seen that before".Nothing would be greater than a needle from the hay stack.I'm working on that video clip, stay tuned. Try F&S Buell (err, Harley Davidson) in Dayton... They stock a pretty good inventory, and raced a lot. Don't know if they will have the XR1000 parts, but probably worth a phone call... http://fshd.com/Default.asp |

Part of the trick is to just recite the part number . . don't tell them it's a race part or a very rare part. I always walked in and acted like it was something they guy could just walk in the back and pick up.

Just got word . . none in the barn nor the old R&D area. Also suggested diligent dealer search . . I'm betting you'll find them. They are the types of part that folks "ordered extra" of. Tilley would be one of the first places I'd check. Also check Topeka Harley-Davidson/Buell. Talk to Bruce Zimmerman. Both he and I had XR-1000's at the same time and he knows them inside out. |

I would check Walters HD in Peoria Il. They've been racing as long as racing has been going on. Also Roederers in Indiana. |

Thanks Court ,you have given me renewed hope that they will be found.I used to go to Ventura HD,when it was still in Ventura. The guy there was an old racer so when I spit out XR it sparked his interest.Alot of the time he say "Yeah,I know I've got one of those back there somewhere,if you can find it you can have it." Then he would escort me back to his private stock of race parts new and old then leave me there to dig thru stuff. |

Thanks everyone for the help.Big thanks to Dennis at F&S HD/Buell in Dayton Ohio, parts have been ordered.ARP,just across the street here in Santa Paula, guestimated $500 + for mach. set-up for a new run but did have some over-run from a previous order marked XB,a little shorter than for XR but was an option. The whole thing took a little over 12 Hrs.,I'd call that pretty good stud service Court. Now if I could figure out how to hang the XR from my M2 frame,I'd love to have a Lucifer's Hammer replica. Thanks,Bruce |
