Gateway in St. Loo has one in for evaluation by the local PDs. All black, light bars on back around the bottom of the top case, flashers forward, and a Special Duty sticker on the tank. The salesmen in the H-D morgue showroom is a 25-year police motorcycle vet, started with the last of the AMF H-Ds, rode the Kwackers and didn't like the handling and lack of traction in the wet. Finished with Evos. Thought it was a fine bike and of course is the one who will deliver the Special Duty, as his experience will relate to the department's needs. Good choice by Gateway to send him.

Anyway, anything special about the Ulysses Special Duty?

Nope. Bone stock with the public service kit that's detailed in the service and parts manuals.

I ordered a bunch of the parts just to see how long they took to get and what they looked like.

It should be an exquisite public service bike and I'd love to troll one through New York City.

The horn or the siren?

I **think** the Public Service package just has the speaker for the siren.

The siren I have (same on the NYPD and FDNY use) is the Motorola HLN1241C Syntor XX with the fog horn, welp, wail and "machine gun" sound. Also has the 100W PA.

Court, do you have that mounted to your bike? If so I would be interested in the setup you used. The siren or PA on the XP uses what looks like two mounts welded to the frame which is not on the regular Uly. I am toying with a couple of ways to mount a PA that makes noises (not First Responder noises of course).

I do not have it mounted to my bike I have the air horn and it's all I need here.

The Uly XP uses a special bracket for the exponential horn and (as I look) uses a Control Module (lights and siren) P/N Y0449.1AU that mounts under the seat.

All the diagrams, wiring and details are in the 2009 parts manual.

The Ulysses frame is P/N L0600.4AKYBP while the XP model is P/N L0600.1AUYBP to accommodate the attachment of the siren bracket P/NL0511.1AUYT

But then . . . . I'm a construction worker. . . . I wouldn't take my word.

OK, yes I see that in the parts book and thought you might have found a different way to mount it. I will be adding a VHF/UHF transceiver. I was not really interested in adding a siren but I noticed in the specs of the transceiver that it has a PA function. I also found a weather proof speaker that just begs to be added. I think I have the antenna mount figured out without drilling into the bags (I really do not want to do that LOL).

I will document the modifications although I do not think anyone would be interested but you never know.

I think I will fab some type of bracket for an external speaker (noise maker) and see where that goes.

Thanks

It's about time someone figured out how to put a 2 way radio on a Uly!
Now an ant with a little db gain...

I actually got to ride one across the street. Kristi's department was looking at one and trailered the demo to the department on our MC trailer. When they got there they were all too scared to ride it from the side of the road to the garage so they let me do it. The lights were cool, but other than that it was pretty much like riding mine. I have to admit the horn is cool but wonder if the horn/siren it's causing so much drag that is kills top end performance.

In the end they were given a used Harley from another department so they passed. Add that to the fact that both the chief and buyer were Harley owners and could not get over the height of the Uly, it had no chance. I wonder why this option is not made available on the XT?

F_Skinner,

Is that going to be a 2 meter VHF rig? If so, what radio are you looking at? I would be interested in how you install things as I think about it occasionally.

Court, sorry to hijack your section and I will post over in the Uly section as soon as I start this project.

Alchemy, I will be using the Yaesu FTM-10, dual band 2 meters and 70 cm. I am not a fan of Yaesu equipment (I use Ten Tec and Heathkit and occasional Kenwood gear) but for VHF/UHF I do not really care.

This is the only radio on the market made for motorcycles. There is a web site on ham radio and motorcycle at. http://marc-hq.org/ but is of minimal help.

I did some testing with a handheld trying to determine the best headset setup and have not found one yet. I will probably end up making one. It must be in the helmet and able to hardwire to the radio. I decided not to pursue bluetooth.

The biggest challenge is the mounting of the antenna. I think I have that figured out. The requirements are simple, ground plan, able to withstand wind and does not interfere with the operation of the bags and clears that big trunk of the outdoorsman bag set.

Next time you get a chance, take a look at your Uly and relay any ideas you have on the best place to mount a quarterwave 2 meter and 70 cm antenna.

BTW: Since the FCC, with help of the ARRL, have dumbed down the test so much Lynn got her license with little effort (end of rant) and since we are both licensed and both ride this is logical and has much better range than anything for bike communications on the market.

I had a 99 channel 100W UHF Mara-Trac in my truck which I kind of liked. I was running itinerant freqs and one of the benefits of having a house that this the highest point on the east coast between South Carolina and Maine is that my Motorola repeater in the attic allowed me to sit on the Tappan Zee Bridge and trip my repeater.

I haven't installed the radio in the new truck and the drawer unit would take up more the tail end of the Ulysses but the thought has occurred to me. . . . be fun to be riding with someone and have 80 miles of range.

: )

I think I'm out of the 2-way business and, after Team Elves did the deal at Bonneville, sold about a dozen 40W UHF and a dozen 4W UHF handheld, bank chargers and Motorola and David Clark headsets.

Radio stuff is addicting!

Frank, thanks for your opinion on the Yaesu FTM-10, it picqued my interest at the local ham radio shop and I wondered how well it worked. I've had bad luck with my last Yaesu though, so I'll probably stick to Icom for VHF/UHF and TenTec for HF. BTW, TenTec could teach Buell a lot about customer service. I walked into their factory in Tennessee with my 25 year old Argosy HF rig and even the receptionist recognized the model even though it was last built in the '80s. In a few minutes they had me fixed up with a new knob and gave me some advice on cleaning the bandswitch contacts... But I hung around and BSed for an hour or so anyway. They've been building radios in Tennessee since 1968 and still supply parts and service for them all, although they can't make some repairs due to vendor parts being unavailable. HOG management ought to stop buy TenTec for a few lessons!

Court, the old Motorola gear is incredible- we had old HT1000s that got dropped a half a dozen times a day and still worked for over a decade. When the managers got new off brand radios, we drivers grabbed their old ones and hoarded them. The only down side to the Motorollas is the cost of reprogramming them- by comparison the software for reprogramming a Kenwood, etc. is pretty cheap. I had a Kenwood TK-270 demo at work for a day and it worked great, and I was already planning to program in and hide my ham frequenies if we bought it. But before the day was over the battery fell off and broke into a million pieces, and we bought no Kenwood handhelds.

Buellgrrrl, I think comparing Buell to TenTec is apples and oranges. Buell has to rely on dealerships to be their frontline so to speak. Everything is central for Ten Tec in TN. That is why you would be hard pressed to find a retailer that sells or services Ten Tec gear if there are any at all. Imagine having a problem with your Buell and having to take it to East Troy for service.

I have had bad experiences and good ones with Ten Tec. I use a Omni 6 plus and an Orion on HF. I had to send the Orion back to the factory, at my expense 5 times and they finally replaced it but never found anything wrong it. It would it just turn it self off. I isolated the problem but their test could not replicate it. Kind of frustrating with a $4,000 rig.

I have also visited the Ten Tec factory and had a blast. It is well worth the experience.

I am a CW operator so I do not use VHF or UHF much and never really had a need for it until now. Which is why I encouraged Lynn to get her license. That is also why I use Ten Tec, made in USA and the best QSK on the market. The only company that had better QSK was Heathkit.

I, like you I imagine, am frustrated with getting parts for my Buells. I have a couple of them and it is an effort to keep them all road worthy. I would really like to see a central distribution for parts on-line however, I do believe that some dealerships are already stepping up to that challenge. I recently typed in a part number in google and found a dealership were I could order on line. Yes the part was not in stock but they ordered it and it will be here next week. Less than two weeks to my door is leaps and bounds over what I have dealt with in the past.

BTW: Ten Tec has had a lot of problems with their source code that was developed internally and then their programmer left. They were about two years behind in their software defined software development. The old gear like your Argosy and my Omni 6 plus has not been equaled for easy maintenance and reliability. They are getting better but I would like to see the original Availability and Dependability test of the Orion. I think they released an unproven product.

Look into Elecraft (www.elecraft.com). I built two of their radios a K1 and K2 and I still have the K1. I have thrown that rig in the saddle bags and strung up a wire and used the bike battery for a power source with a solar recharger. Kinda of cool talking to South America from my tent in a remote campground with just a long wire a 3 watts and a bike as the power source.
