I am in my junior year of college, finishing my BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology..... I once upon a time saw an ad for an opening with Buell as a design engineer. I've looked high and low, and have never seen an opening/section/site/anything in reference to openings there. I have talked with my misses about the possibility of moving a thousand miles and facing even more severe winters, and she feels if I can pursue my dreams, then to go for it. I would love to work for Buell, but I don't know how to even start....... I don't know if I should be posting in here, but you have such a plethura of knowlege that if anyone would know where to look, it would be you.... Thanks man! Matt |

>>>> we would love to hear, when you have time... There are several that leap to mind. The common element always seems, no different than Erik getting on that plane and flying to frigid Milwaukee to chase the lowest paying job offer he had out of college, to be dogged determination and a lust for the business. Case in point . . . . Guy who was a car enthusiast and not really into motorcycles sees an advertisement in the local newspaper for a old used Studebaker . . . goes to take a look at the car and has been connected, in one way, shape or form, ever since and helped chart the course of Buell. Another . . . . an unemployed shop teacher who'd been looking for a job for a long time sees two ads in the local rag . . . one for Briggs-Stratton another for an unheard of motorcycle company. Holding little hope he decides to drive by the place on a Saturday and sees a car out front, decides to snoop about and finds a guy "with a couple kids crawling around on the floor" there working . . . talks to the guy for a while and they get along well but he doesn't get his name. 4 months later he gets a call from the guy he talked to, started the next week and was largely responsible (aided by another fascinating story in Gary Stippach) for the development of a couple very interesting motors from Buell. He's moved from Buell to HDU now and is one of the smartest and nicest folks I've ever met. They kind of guy who, like many of the folks at Buell, changes your life for the better. Need a better one . . . . kid on Badweb snaps off some smart remark and I reply to him "what are you a rocket scientist?" . . . and a couple days later I get an e-mail "yes, sir. I currently work for NASA but would love to work for Buell". He does now and Buell won big in that deal. Abe Askenazi's story is no secret but it also never gets old . . . . If there is a true pure genius at Buell it very well may be Abe. He hails from Mexico and attended school in California where he did research on the physical behavior and dynamics in two-wheel in-line vehicles. He authored the definitive tome on Finite Element Analysis and has placed Buell at the top (not "near", I said at THE top") in the world among manufactures moving technology from theory to practice. The list of folks visiting Buell includes many non-motorcycle firms and if Abe tells you something . . listen carefully, he's not just guessing. Like many of his co-workers he happens to be one of the nicest guys in the world, a fabulous friend and, a common attribute between Erik, Dave, Lars, Dano and all of us, married well above his station. One of Buells greatest accomplishments was getting Abe off his Ducati Monster. It took years and he's now a confirmed "Uly for life" rider. There are so many more . . . . Lars from the United States Army, Bruce the C.P.A., Dano the powersports guys . . . Henry the go kart fellow . . . it goes on and on. The fascinating part is that, like Lasagna, Buell is a fascinating place that relies on the key ingredients of each and every single one of these folks. I talk to folks weekly from the shipping guys, production people (if you want a true SUCCESS story . . how about Mike Juliano!) and the engineers. Trust, respect and unfettered adherence and genuine belief in the BUELL VALUES bonds them . . . it is just as cool as it sounds. Don't get me started . . . By the way . . . one of you had written for the name to send HR stuff to. I'm on my first day of vacation, from work and school, starting today and will be answering over 100 Buell e-mails . . . I'll get the info to you. Yeah . . . don't get me started!

Please, Court, go ahead and start We haven't built on our land yet, selling that to buy in Wisconsin would be easy enough! Now, if I just had a marketable skill..... Enjoy your vacation, Kim is counting the days to hers as well (new job on post, plus three business courses, plus having to cope with me every day). I'd say go out and ride, but I think you got all the snow that I wanted to get down here. 'course, it's 19 degrees and 40mph winds here; I may not be riding today either. Hm. Where'd I put my Adventure pants...? |

I used to sell Buells and HDs for about 5-6 years. One day while I was with a customer my friend came in and was looking over a harley waiting for me. My sales manager walked over and my buddy asked a pretty specific question that the ignorant manager didn't know. "What are you a rocket scientist?" Needless to say the manager was pretty embarrassed to hear he works on Shuttles. Another quick one. I'm like 4 or 5 yrs old and shopping with my Aunt at a store within walking distance from her home. A sales clerk was helping us for about 5 minutes. Aunt is trying shirts on. She asks the clerk "What color is this?"..."What are you blind?"..."Yes I am, and I would like to speak to your boss" The look on her face was priceless. Don't prejudge. Ok back on topic. |

I've been asked about the rocket science as well, and I calmly reply: "No, but I am a nuclear engineer, but thanks for asking!". The look of disbelief never fails to make me laugh. I'm talking to the old lady about trying to endure WI weather..... We're fighting back and forth, but I think I have to settle on if for some reason she gets offered a promotion close enough, I might get to go..... |

Matthew, If you strike out at Buell - PM me. We're seriously looking for engineers with an interest in PRACTICAL design - we have WAAY TOO MANY theoreticians. We also do intern gigs too. Heck, they're even offering rewards for suckering new engineers into coming on board. PM me. Our little group has a LARGE group of willing risk-takers as a matter of our daily jobs... in a sense, risk taking is a requirement and it keeps it interesting. see what you think(click) |

HR, or XR? If the latter, guilty as charged and eminently patient. Vacation? Having lived my life backwards: on vacation until age 47, then married (up) and acquired the "family kit," I occasionally entertain myself with memories of the halcyon days of sordid youth with 15 bikes in the garage (68 in all over the years) and neither senior management nor junior management to serve. Still, having "been everywhere and done everything" on the original bucket list well in advance of middle age was really more advantageous than awaiting a gold watch retirement and reluctant Carib cruise with the blue hairs. I'll take my eventual dirt nap without regret of what may have been missed. Buell caught my eye early on for it's quantum leap with the RR1000. To develop "H-D engine based sport bikes" was brilliant. To take motorcycle technology to a new benchmark over and over was without equal. Ingenuity is an inherently American trait and separates Mr. Buell, et al, apart. The only time I met him was at one of his local dealer appearances w/band & felt tip with which he signed the seat on my modified S2 (The "Torque Monster," he called it when he saw it) he'd ridden at Daytona Bike Week under prior ownership. I thanked him for the signature and said then, and will say now, that Buell is significant. Amen. Any one who continues the ingenuity is okay in my book. |

It was orange with b&w checks back then, 96 in. w/Big Twin Aerocharger & nitrous kicking in on the last 5% of throttle. "Prior ownership" passed along receipts for about $30K. He used a wheelie bar on the street. In that form, it was in a French motorcycle magazine. While testing the new tarmac on I-55 with my butt in the saddle, it jumped air @ 120 mph, according to my riding pal. If God made anything more fun, He kept it for himself. |

It was the one that was in the "Buell Motorcycle Show" in the parking lot and, after riding it, Erik made a few comments, went over, picked up ALL THREE of the trophies and placed them in front of the bike. Not sure it'd be my choice for a street bike but the thing was an absolute rocket ship. I have a case of photos somewhere. |

If memory serves, that 3 trophy story was relayed to me by the bike's builder. Actually pretty docile for sport riding use, with temperance and the comfy knowledge it was the hottest street legal Buell going in the Ozarks. We downsized. I barely have room to tinker w/ a couple of XR motor projects, one 1000 & a 1300 (don't ask). So, was the last RR1200 sold a 5-speed? Were any or others? Gee whiz, I ignored all the RRs for sale over the years and now that I want to do a last hurrah, I'm finding none on the market. If the economy is so horrible, it's not reflected in early Buell offerings. |
