Court I think I just had the same thing happen to my mac as happened to yours. I am curious if they were able to retrieve any files for you from the old hard drive as I did not have a good backup either.
Thanks

I was amazed.

As a long time PC guy I expected the worst, hours on the phone trying to replicate strings of cryptic commands.

I was wrong.

My call was answered after 2 rings, not 30 minutes. There was no endless series of entering keypad information.

The fellow said "I think I can fix that".

He was wrong.

But . . . within seconds . . .he had me an appointment 30 minutes hence at the local Apple store, I had to hurry to get there.

As I walked in the door the "Genius" said "you must be Courtney" and pointed me toward the guy who was assigned my case.

He hooked up a laptop with diagnostics . . . "yes, the hard drive is shot. There are lots of variants so we don't keep many in stock but I'll have it by tomorrow".

He did.

With all data.

I picked it up, came home, called Lenovo and cancelled the order for the new T61 I was having built.

I still have a PC on my desk and I think it works (haven't checked in a while) but have gone Apple all the way. I got "The Missing Manual" (Thanks Gentleman Jon) and am going to add (not giving up my Verizon just yet) an IPhone account.

The Mac folks "get it" and treat me like a customer not a pain in the ass. I'll keep buying Macs for the same reason I buy Gibson guitars.

The data was all intact.

I bought a Western Digital very largish hard drive. . . plugged it in and TIME MACHINE (perhaps one of the most amazing computer applications I've ever seen) found me. . . . .

I'm amazed. You will be too.

The Mac folks "get it"

Yes they do. I recently purchased a Macbook and even though the Apple Store was packed I had someone answer 30 minutes of stupid questions from me. I went to lunch to think about it, came back, and was in and out of there in 10 minutes.

I really did feel old in that store.

Apple should be the model for many retail stores.

>>>>I really did feel old in that store.

No kidding!

Part, I confess, of what shaped my thinking was my many hours in Butler Library at Columbia University. There are 4 laptops sitting on each table and each day I do a very informal survey.

I'll steer clear of any "how smart college makes you" unwarranted leaps of faith but I, and you, can read the things that have come out of these halls from Atomic energy to our President elect. Ignoring the obvious exceptions, like myownself, this is not a "stupid" group and when I see about 85% Apple laptops I bridge some mental synapses and jump to some conclusions.

I'm not very good with a Mac yet. But I have come to grips with the fact that the weakness is me not the machine.

Truth be known the Mac and PC probably have evolved to the point where each provides utility pretty much on par with one another.

The huge difference is when you have to call either Dell or Mac to resolve an issue.

Mac by a mile.

True, it's kind of a "convergent evolution" thing.

The Mac is built on a better foundation, the PC has had more money poured into development to make it work in spite of its weak foundation (which was already out of date when windows first hit).

Try Ubuntu Linux some time, thats another eye opener. They have a "live demo disk" that you can boot from a CD Rom drive and use on your PC without installing anything.

We shall see soon, in our house...just got Kim a new 13.3" Macbook. "For school" was the excuse, but in reality it's to replace her boat anchor 2001 or 2002 "laptop" (were our laps really that big back then?).

Now I just have to remember how to speak Mac. Used 'em all the time in college...but back then a Powerbook was the big thing (and it sat next to my Mac-in-a-box). Time to brush up.

I have had the same experience(s) with apple and their customer service. Many companies out there in this world need to take a look at how they treat their customers and learn from it.
I am still learning some of the in's/out's of the app's two years after the switch but there is no going back for me or my wife!

I guess I am the only one that had Apple not even look at my sisters Ipod Nano. It won't turn on, won't even power up when plugged into the computer. Apple won't touch it because of a hairline crack in the outer most screen. Funny, because it had been cracked for about 2 months before hand, and the unit was 6 months old. Not trying to troll or anything.

Ironhead, good luck. Data retrieval can be hit and miss, depending on the failure. : )

not giving up my Verizon just yet

If you plan on doing much riding away from the east coast, keeping the Verizon is a good move.

We're going to an Apple compound at my house too. I have a new Aluminum MacBook, a BlackBook, an Airport Extreme base station, my daughter has a MacBook Pro, and a number of iPods float around. The reason: Customer Service and the Unix base of the system. I cannot speak highly enough about Apple as a company. Every complaint, concern, or difficulty is handled quickly, easily, and without condescension. They are the best. We couldn't be happier. I am becoming an evangelist.....or an extreme fanboy. The cost of the Apple is not much higher than other products and you DO get what you pay for.

I got an iMac in October and absolutely love it, but there's one thing I have not been able to figure out. On my Vaio laptop it's so easy to resize photos for uploading- right click and resize. I have yet to figure out how to accomplish this on the iMac.

I discovered that when sending a pic from iPhoto directly to an e-mail there's a resizing option, but other than that I'm at a loss. What's the secret?

You have to export it and then choose your options from there.

Yeah, I've seen that- but it seems to resize by picture size (3X5, 4X8, 5X10, 8X11, etc...) instead of pixel size, which is what is needed to upload to forums. Or am I missing something?

Can't believe I found a Mac thread on this forum. Switching to a MacBook Pro was the best move I've made in a while. Unlike selling my XB12ss.

Now all I need to do is save enough money to by the XB12XT I want. Hopefully I can sell the BMW R1150R this spring to get a good chunk of the money.
