i have a 1999 buell m2 and the rear shock is cracked i called buell customer service and my shock was recalled but they only put the reinforcement system on and know my shock has a crack in the weld i asked him if they hade a replacement shock and he said they did make a replacement shock but i didnt get one when i asked him if i could get one he said they didnt have any more i was never contacted about the replacement shock in the first place the bike only has 11,000 miles on it i thought they hade to give me the recalled updated shock

What Scott's asking is if you could help him on figuring out why he cannot obtain the recalled shock, when he could walk in and order one (which would cost him money), but they cannot give him one to fulfill the recall. I'm wondering if he has to go through the dealer to have it done, which I did not think about until now.

I sent him over to call Buell Customer Service, and they told him that they did not have any updated rear shocks for the M2L.

After talking with him, and finding the outcome of his discussion with BCS, I mentioned that you may be able to help with this matter, because he actually didn't know about calling BCS, or that you may be able to help as well.

Wilson,

All recall's have to be performed by a Certified Buell Service dealer. When that shock goes on this person's bike it goes into HD's or Buell's data base that the recall was satisfied on that Vin# or bike. Not possibly given and put on another bike. Also The shock wasn't handed to the customer put on incorrectly and nobody got hurt.

I recall some very buell-connected type people saying that the shock recall was overboard and they never actually failed and all that. Can you post pics, please?

I said, and will repeat, that there has never been a shock failure in actual service.

The reason for the shock recall was quite literally a "one in a million" chance. The ethical decision came when someone ask "but ever if it is one in a million" and the Buell Recall Team decided to go with the recall. It was really an amazing move.

Has anyone else had their shock break in half at high speed?

I got the PM and have replied. The problems being discussed, based on the information I was sent, are unrelated to anything that had to do with any recall.

I never saw one break in half, but I've seen them with sub standard welds on the front eye that would've failed, beyond a shadow of a doubt, had the shock remained in service very long.

There is, and you are probably way more knowledgeable about this than I, a huge difference between a bad weld and an ugly weld.

I spend lots of time supervising QA/QC programs for monitoring welds in process piping in power plants and welding on Iso-Phase Bus.

Never in all the testing and analysis that has been done has the integrity of the welds become an issue.

That does not mean some may not be ugly.

You may have seen an ugly weld, I doubt you saw a "bad" weld.

I've wondered though, why the SRP came out on the new-and-improved-but-not-improved-enough shock?

I was perusing your profile and noticed that you have stated that "I've had shocks break at speed", but in this thread, you state "I said, and will repeat, that there has never been a shock failure in actual service."

Could you please clarify? I've always wondered what good an SRP kit would serve if welds were ok. Wasn't that what was the first (exposed spring) shock recall supposed to address, also?

Yes.

The one I broke was a TEST unit never sold to the public and it failed as a result of physical damage (trust me you will never do what I did to that bike) I subjected it to.

The reasons behind the various shock recalls were related to poor QC on the part of the supplier, not any defect in the shocks.
