Al:

You need to be very nice to me. I have been digging through old pictures.

I'll say two things.

You married VERY well.

Your wife is MUCH better looking than you.

I'll trade P4P. . . . "pictures for pie".

I own you.

Hi Court, I'm having a problem with the brakelight switch for the front brake not working. I have replaced about ten of them. It's on a '98, S1. I've gotten tired of buying them, but would like to find a fix. Thanks Harold

>>>I have replaced about ten of them.

Harold: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

1) Is the switch bad? Have you tested it's function using an Ohmmeter or multi-meter or battery/light bulb?

2) You've checked, I presume the bulb?

3) What does your authorized Buell dealer have to say about this?

I am surprised they've sold you 10 switches without asking what the heck is going on.

By the way. . . . were you able to get the switches without any problem?

Check those things and keep us posted.

Hi Court, I have checked them with an OHM meter and I have even torn one up to see what is going on. My thinking about buying so many was that they had a bad run at the factory, they are only five dollars, but yes it is insane. I thought you might have heard of this and had another part to exchange it with. I can get some more life out of them by using contact cleaner, but it's equally as insane. And yes I can get as many of them as I want, and the dealer doesn't have a clue and isn't looking into it. Thanks Harold

Harold:

I "doubt" (I never say never . . I've seem'em all!) they had a bad run at the factory.

The function is checked as one of the final steps of production.

I'd be a bit more emphatic with your dealer and have them get a Tech Service person involved. Something is not right.

I'd like to have those 9 bad ones to send back and have checked. I'll PM you my address.

I dropped my bike of last Saturday because it's still having the same sputtering and engine light issues that it's had for almost 6 months now.

1. The bike was originally taken to American H-D in April with this issue, and after keeping the bike for almost two weeks they weren’t able to find a problem.

2. Derek’s first phone call to H-D: H-D told me to take the bike to Brighton H-D and they would help them troubleshoot the problem.

3. The tech at Brighton H-D reset my TPS and never bothered to contact H-D or look any further into the issue. Needless to say, resetting the TPS didn’t fix the problem.

4. July 28th: Derek schedules a service appointment with American H-D to resolve the same issue. First available appointment...September 1st. Good thing Michigan has such a long riding season.

5. Derek’s second phone call to H-D: Since the tech at Brighton H-D never contacted H-D as he was instructed, I’m stuck taking it to the dealership one more time before H-D sends out a tech. They say to keep my appointment with American H-D and they will make sure one of their techs contact them.

6. Derek’s first phone call from American H-D: they had two techs put over 100 miles on the bike and they couldn’t recreate the problem. They did get two “historic” codes from the bike which were the Engine Temp Sensor and the Oxygen Sensor, but apparently because they were historic codes there’s nothing they need to do to fix it. They tell me at that point that they’ll call H-D to talk to one of their techs.

7. Derek’s second phone call from American H-D: They talked to H-D and they were able to recreate the sputtering and engine light flashing. Also, after discovering those issues H-D told them to check the grounds at which point they found the following issues. First, my throttle cable was rubbing through my spark plug wire. Same issue American H-D “fixed” last year. Second, my idle cable is chaffing. Same issue Brighton H-D supposedly fixed about a month ago. Third, there was some issue with my battery cables.

8. Derek’s third phone call from American H-D: they are working to correct the issues above, and if those don’t work, they’ll check the fuel pressure and check to see if there’s and intake leak.

Hi D3r3k, this sounds like a problem I had some years ago with another Buell, ('97) Check and make sure your vent line for the gas tank isn't being pinched off. Buell likes to run this hose with everything else down through the chassis in a bundle and that hose is so soft it's easy to pinch. I just pulled it out of the bundle and ran it down next to the bundle. Harold

Court,

not to change the subject, sounds like Derek is having a crisis and I'd hate to intervene, but quickly do you know if there's a way to install cityx flyscreen on the ulysses? and just to confirm something, the hero blue airbox cover will fit on a uly without change won't it?

appreciate it in advance

The airbox covers are interchangeable between all XB models and even the 1125R.

Sorry, I can't help you on the flyscreen. Any of the Big, Bad, and Dirty guys have an answer? (that's the Uly forum and they
have the most combined experience with the model)

The fly screen won’t fit, as the Ulysses fly screen is much larger than the Lightning series. Some people have taken the Ulysses fly screen and drilled holes in it and used it on the Lightings to get the windshield, but unfortunately it won't work the other way around. I hope they release a translucent blue fly screen for the Uly. : )

Court,
I would like to say thank you very much for the tip you gave me to resolve issues at the dealership concerning warranty repairs. That being "call CS". Those folks are as good as the Buell I ride and I consider it to be the best bike I have ever owned. (thats a lot of bikes, by the way)
That tip has made the difference between a very good and a very bad ownership experience for me. I am just a dumb carpenter and to you, this tip may have seemed rudimentary but it would have likely escaped me without your advice. I owe you big. If I can ever do anything for you, just ask.
Thank you Court Canfield!
Sincerely,
Dan Kenshol.

Dan:

You can do something for me.

You can write the folks at Buell Customer Service and share this with them. Please copy Jon Flickinger and Erik Buell.

During a meeting a couple weeks ago (not the Customer Service Group) there were some very unkind things said about me. I think a bit of positive information would be good.

There is a misconception that I frequently make "end runs" around the Customer Service Group. You, like others, of course know that my first suggestion is ALWAYS call Customer Service. It is their job. I try to only intervene in response to poor communication and where I can contribute to Buell's overall success.

Thank you for the kind words.

Hello harold bragg:
Front Brake Switch Failure Fix.

I have 4 S3's and this has happened twice. Never use WD-40 or contact cleaner into the switch. It will only burn when the contacts open and the switch will fail. The contacts must be completely clean to work properly. Once you get one working for a month or so you are home free. (There is a lot of current passing through this switch.)

You can carefully open the switch with a knife slid between the plastic pieces. the two posts should stay intact. (Small parts may fly so do this over a table.) Clean the contacts with alcohol and a cotton rag. Slide the pieces together. No need to glue as the mounting bolt keeps that parts together.

I would have to agree whole heartedly with the man.

Better look . . . it probably said "chump" not "champ".

He's one of the most amazing things to happen in Buells 25 years.

Not everyone who's been asked to steer could see the course.

He does.

In addition, regardless of motorcycles, he's simply just a nice person.

Thanks for sharing, that's nice to hear.

Court,
I had hoped to never have to call on you for help, and may just not need it yet. I am going to my local HD dealer tomorrow (Brandon Fl) to yet again have my bike looked at for a failed voltage regulator / stator. Died on the way home tonight on the freeway. Started out with a nice 13.4 volts and steadily dropped to 6 volts about 18 miles into the ride. I live 28 miles away from work. The bike really didn't like to run like that.

This will be the third time since new in '06 that either the regulator, stator or both have gone down the tube. As depressing as that is, I had plans to go to Daytona this weekend and possibly Seminole Buell Thursday to hear Erik and the band and meet the man behind what I thought was a really great bike.

Now, I absolutely know my dealership will not have the parts and not be able to get them in time much less perform the service (damn well better be under warranty)before Saturday. Thursday is shot unless I drive there by car (ugh). Maybe I should to ask the question of Erik himself.

My question to you is, what is the problem with the electrical system on the Ulysses? This has only happened when the bike has been ridden through rain. My last soaking was due to weather over the past couple of days here in sunny Fl. I never use a pressure washer on any thing but my house. The bike is not ridden through 2 foot deep gator swamps. Most of the time, good soakings cause no issue. But some special circumstances, and alignment of the planets cause my regulator to wig out two days after rain that wasn't that heavy. I rode through it!

I'm putting the Customer Service Number in my cell simply because I also know this will be a huge headache with the dealership. It should be fun because they (HD) have stated in the past that a GPS, satellite radio, and 2, 55 watt lights are "too much" for the charging system. I guess wearing heated gloves, heated vest, and grip warmers is too much also with a constant 13.6 volts charging at idle along with the other electrical vampires. So can you shed any light onto this electrical voodoo of regulators and stators?

Now my next question - Why is Buell the ginger haired, adoptee of HD? If the dealer sells Buells, works on Buells and has a Buell sign outside, what's wrong with stocking the parts that crap out the most? And these are parts that take a dump more often than not. I know you watch this forum and you see the posts regarding the bad regulators, fried stators, and melted connectors. My dealer can't even stock Buell spark plugs. I can almost understand not stocking a front rotor, but no spark plugs? Simple Buell Pro Series spark plugs? Are they made in China for dogs sake? Is a Buell manual for the bike on the floor really that hard to order and have available for the buyer of that bike? Bizarre, just bizarre.

Trust me my fingers are crossed that the very good people at my service dealership can work miracles ( no BS, they are good people), but I'm loosing faith in the bike. My plans for this summer to tour to Sturgis just took a big kick in the neither regions. How can I trust that the dealers along the way have the parts if they once again commit Hara Kiri in Kansas? Or how about rear wheel bearings? Will they have bearings in Beaver Boot, North Dakota? Shoot, I might be able to get a neck gaiter from the dust bin out back, but a regulator and stator? 3 weeks, pal.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great bike. It's not a lemon. It's hot cherry pie. I do love it so. I'm just one of the faithful who is having a sever bout of disillusionment. And I may need a divorce - or a doctor. Know anyone who wants an '06 with 21k on the clock? Faster Black! New regulator and stator!

Thanks for any input,
Mike

Court,

Yesterday I was out riding my 03 XB9S and after stopping at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway I got back on the bike and she started to wobble. I looked down and my rear rt wheel bearing was out and spinning on the axle! She was pushed to a service station and has not been ridden since. Is this in part due to the so called wheel bearing recall? If so the Buell Customer service lady today at 2:37est said there had been no wheel bearing recalls for my bike and that it wasn't their problem (recall). I'm not really excited about having to buy a new rear wheel as I think it's toast but if they were recalled shouldn't I be able to get something done, I love my Buell and how she feels here in WNC.

I know you've probably heard about this more times than you can count but hey I didn't know who else to contact.

Kind Regards,

Travis

It's a bit of a convoluted tale but suffice to say there was a Buell owner with a problem. . . I relayed it to a friend. . . friend was on vacation. . . .bounced it with a "handle it" endorsement to another friend and within 60 minutes Buell owner and dealer had tracking nmmber and the case was closed.

CAVEAT: I'm biased.

PERSONAL OPINION: Buell is one amazing company.

Do you know if in the warehouse of extra Tuber parts, there might be one of these left?

I have been trying forever to get one, and got sniped out at my bid of $150 bucks.

Been looking for one for the M2, well, since I've owned her...

And by the way, since you forgot the shirts at Erik's house when you came up to the Tiki bar, any chance to still get one?
