Court,

Any idea if the November HD plant closings will have any impact on Buell production?

Yes, I have an idea and an opinion.

My idea is that it will have no immediate impact on Buell.

Long term and ancillary impact is a matter of opinion.

The company is also shutting down operations at three sites in Wisconsin that week.

Do the 3,000 affected include the Wisconsin people? If not then how many Wisconsin folks will also be directly affected.

And didn't this same game get played last year?

With the exception of this past February's strike (at the same York plan), I don't recall Harley shutting down any plants during the '07 model year.

Media Hype!
York is only shutdown for 4 days, Monday (a holiday) is the 1st Day of Buck Season.
Most of the hunters take a week off anyway.

Assembly is off but maintenance will be working just like any July 4th shutdown.

We used to shut down every July 4th week, since the 100th we have not.

Mike:

I, conceding a lot less knowledge than you have on the topic, tend to agree.

I suspect that as Harley-Davidson's market and supply:demand situation changes, and it's going to, that many alarmists will commence the long anticipated tribal "we told you so" dance.

Harley-Davidson's business climate and supply and demand balance is likely to be changing soon.

The greatest enemy, I'd suggest, is within and in the form of folks who were middle and low level folks when the current unprecedented trend began. Those are the folks, at this time, who fail to think are are most likely to fall into the "just keep doing what we've always done" mindset.

I think there are some young, smart folks in line and that you'll see some changes in leadership and many happy years ahead.

It is going to be interesting to watch.

By the way . . . .in response to the original question . . the answer, as I had suspected, is no.

Buell has an interesting situation. The Helicon motor is now signed off and production motors are commencing.

At present, and since early July, Buell has been building nothing but XB's and Blasts. They are building up inventory levels and rather than "jelly bean" when the 1124r starts production, every bike down the line will be an 1125r.

This is a bit of a change from past practice and one that's been carefully planned.

Ergo, Buell . . . starting in about 3 weeks . . .will have no need for air cooled motors for a bit.

I hope they make at least one more Bluelysses before they stop . . . my wife thinks it's an awesome color and it looked a bit faster than the orange and black bikes I've seen.

: )

That may be true (I don't concede the point), but I've seen you on an orange Uly, and you looked good on it. Almost as good as I look on it.

Having gotten a pair of bluelysses' in so far this season...go for the blue. Until this year I was all about the barricade orange, but now...it's a great shade of blue and looks just right on there.

Now, if we could just keep one long enough for me to ride it : (

Court would look even better on a carbon fiber Uly, and would be faster than the slower black/blue/orange ones that weigh 1.4 lbs more : )

Oh yea, my big ass PIAAs are to slow me down a bit so you slow Ulys have a chance : )

Ratbuell, i know this sounds like a bad joke, but you are right. Well that day it was boxes of parts from the dealer, but normally i do ride with an electric cooler on the back.

Corporate slow down and parts!!! I am having a severe difficultly getting Ulysses sprocket bolts. I was told it was that the factory is shut down! There has to be a source for these, none of the local dealers have them either. I will get the part numbers and see if I can get this solved out of the Mother Ship parts network.

There may be some truth to the "factory shut down" deal. Tuesday we had the ice storm come though and East Troy got hit pretty hard. It is certainly possible that they shut down for the day and sent everyone home. I am sure if they did everyone was back to work Wednesday.

Thanks for your help guys. Say what you will about the internet, but THIS place Rocks. Everyone that chimed in and sent a note to me, it is greatly appreciated. We will have the rider back on the road shortly. And now back to gloom and doom; The sky is falling, the world is flooding, and the polar caps are melting because Harley was shut for a week. ;)
