Court,

I had my Uly up at the Dragon last week and for the first time carefully set the rear pre-load to ride two-up. I found that I could only get 18 turns as opposed to the 20 that the manual says I should be able to get.

I checked BadWeb and found at least one other Uly rider with a similar problem; he could only get 16 turns of pre-load. I've PM'ed him to see if he found out anything about this issue.

I really need the full pre-load with my wife and bags on the bike, so I want to make sure I'm really getting it. I'm taking the bike in to my dealer (Lowcountry HD/Buell in Charleston, SC) this weekend for service, and I'll ask about it then, but it would be nice to know if this is something that they need to fix before I go in.

There are two ways of dealing with this . . .

I assume you want an answer to your suspension question and not a new wife?

Thanks. Yes, the existing wife is fine and worth the trouble of getting full preload. After all, she has ENCOURAGED me to buy two Buells so far!

Have you had a chance to find out anything on this yet? I dropped my Uly off over the weekend for 5000 mile service and asked them to check on the rear pre-load. HOPEFULLY the bike will be ready this afternoon (1 day late already); I'll let you know what the dealership says about it.

I just looked at 6 different Ulysses ranging form 08’s to 06’s. It seems that this customer has identified an error in our manuals. The bikes ranged from 18.25 to 18.5 turns total available. There is a bit of variance on the low end of the adjustment, some have up to 2.5 turns of “free play" before they start to build pressure, others have as low as 0.5 turns of free play. Some people don’t count this free play as adjustment range, but I intended to include it in the settings charts. That is basically why the lowest setting starts at 3 turns for the 08 chart. I suspect he has about 2 turns of free play (pretty typical) and is counting the remaining 16 turns for a total of about 18 just like all the other Uly’s I checked.

I would say as long as his adjustor doesn’t feel “gritty” or packed full of dirt, he is getting all of the available travel at the adjustor knob. As long as there is no fluid leaking at the fittings and the preload collar (I have never seen this happen yet), then every turn is translating into spring preload as intended. Have the preload collar visually inspected for leaks, and check the hose for chafing or signs of leakage, but I think he is probably getting everything that all the other Ulysses bikes are getting.

Thanks a lot for the info Court. Yes, that matches mine almost exactly. I get about 2 turns with no resistance at all, then it starts to build pressure. There's no gritty feel in the adjuster and no signs of leakage anywhere. Sounds like I don't have anything to worry about.

As always, it's nice to know Buell is listening. Thanks again for the help.
