I recently broke my Uly key off in the ignition. I didn't abuse it or force it. I didn't even know I did it until the pulled the key out of my pocket at the end of the day.

Well 1/2 of the key is stuck in the lock. The only way to start the bike is by inserting my spare key and turning the ignition on and then removing the key! Neither a small screwdriver, nor my other Buell keys didn't work but the spare did.

I went so far as to remove the ignition assembly and contact a locksmith.

Well, he was stumped. Their isn't enough of the key in the lock to extract it. He told me a few secrets locksmiths use to disassemble similar locks, but none worked on the Buell (Zadi) unit.

I consulted the KV thread to no avail. I can't believe I'm to first to be in this situation.

I bought a new lock from my dealer ($104) and specifically asked if I could get it keyed alike. I really don't want to carry an extra key just for the seat and helmet lock.

Well, I got the assembly (in only a couple days!). It's keyed differently and doesn't fit in my helmet or seat locks. My friend the parts manager tells me that when he orders a HD replacement lock, the computer provides him with a location to enter the lock code but that Buell does not and I appear to be SOL.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Well in this case TWO WRONGS DO MAKE A RIGHT.

First wrong: Your pal the parts guy. I think you MUST enter the key code to order a Buell lock. (I may be wrong, but I can sure find out quick)}

Second wrong: You are SOL . . nah . . . the BCS live to help folks who pull stupid people tricks. Congratulations on pulling a real boner! Welcome to the world of Buell. When you gather some seniority, I'll show you how to dump your bike off the sidestand.

Now,let's get to work . . .

1) Check with your parts bud and have him double check.

2) Drop me a note with your name, VIN, dealer and name/contact info for the parts buddy.

Easy fix.

Hey . . . I see in your profile you are a Miner.

I'm not sure but I think I saw some rules about "sales to miners".

Court,
I tried BCS again, and this time I 'hung tough' until I got to talk some one (don't ya love these automated phone directories). Well, they said a keyed specific lock is available and will take several weeks. (Just what my bud said originally.) BCS can't deal with me directly but will contact the dealer.

I think someone at the distribution center never read the original 'note' on the PO mentioning the specific key code. When the part came into the dealer one of the worker-bees shipped it out before my bud could check the code.
I also just spoke to my guy and he's waiting for the callfrom BCS.

Sorry to have bothered you and thanks for you're support. I'll sit tight and hope this works out without needing to bother you again.

To clarify...HD ignition switch PO's have a specific area where a desired keycode is entered, Buell does not. There is however a spot for 'notes' to be entered on the PO and that's what my guy did...at least that's what I'm told.

My friend was just contacted by BCS. He said they weren't a big help so he went to Spock? and then to HDNet. His normally very resourceful contact there told him that Buell (unlike HD) just has no program in place for keyed-alike ignitions but it has been turned in as a suggestion.

Still want my VIN/keycode?

Something sounds disright.

Somebody is pulling someone's leg . . I **think**.

I don't think you can even hit "Enter" for anything that is keyed without entering the key code.

The is a little old white haired man in Shorewood who will know the answer to this question.

I shall instigate investigate and report back to you.

The keyswitch on my Firebolt started getting erratic (probably worn contacts) so I went to a local Buell dealer to find out what kind of hoops I'd have to jump through to get a new one. Parts guy said no problem, take a week to get it. Week later he handed me a box with a new one. I never showed proof of ownership, a key, or anything. Amazing. Now I have a two key bike.

If guys like Rich Cady, Dave Gess and I are heard laughing . . . well, you'd need to know the history of "Buell vs. Keys".

I don't have them here, they are in Colorado with my S-2, but I used to test a lot of items before they were introduced.

During the evaluation, my bike go lots of things installed and removed. "Keyed alike" was not a bike problem, nor priority and as a result I ended up with a key for the seat lock, a key for the ignition, the fork lock and 3 sets of different keys for luggage. I looked like the guy from facilities at the Empire State Building.

You can get, and I think it's part of the order, matched keys now for Buells. IT should be easy. If you are having any problem, your dealer needs to call S.P.O.C. (I totally dug the reference to SPOCK however) and they can help straighten it out.

If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to help.

: )

Rich . . . here's something to bring back memories. . .

That sounds like my S2 - I have the small key for the "backwards" fork lock, one key that fits the ignition and the seat...one key for the left saddlebag....and a third (fourth if you count the forks) for the right saddlebag.

Now, however, you *can* order keyed-alike locks for the saddlebags. I've looked into it myself, but I don't know that I have $84 worth of aggravation having to read the "L" and "R" that I engraved into the key heads, LOL.

AFAIK, you *can* order a lock cylinder - Buell or HD - without entering a key code. I know this because we have a particular salesperson who NEVER spec's a code when they order things like FLHR accessory tour paks, and the lock cylinder comes in with just a random key code. And then I get to fix it because I pay attention to things like that. You'd think it wouldn't allow things like that...but it appears it does.

It's Buells early SECURITY SYSTEM.

It's easier to launch the Polaris missiles from a submarine than to gain unauthorized entry into my luggage.

Hmm, now I'm confused (so what else is new). Am I waiting for you to "report back" after chatting with the 'man in Shorewood' or should I have me guy contact SPOC (again)?

Just a little bump. Somehow this thread disappeared into the 'July 8, 2007' archive despite a July 22 posting.
