Les Paul is playing Waukesha tonight night for the first time since he played for his mom's 100th birthday some 20 years ago. He has been getting the hero's welcome since his arrival yesterday. Sold out show at $300 a ticket!

I still lament not catching on his Monday night gig when I was in the city a couple years ago. Jeez... my dad use to have Les Paul and Mary Ford records when he was a kid.

Is it my imagination, or is Les Paul cooler and more relavent than he's every been?

He may not be actually cooler . . . I think the rest of us are just now becoming able to appreciate what he has done.

He possesses a few traits I like in a genius.

First. . . he's smart, darn smart.

Second. . he's funny. A bit off color, but darned funny.

Third. . his intellectual curiosity has not diminished with time.

Fourth . . he's a tremendous guitar player. Each time I see him, he plays a bit less, jokes a bit more . . hey, I hope I'm here at that age!

Fifth. . . perhaps one of the most approachable people you'll ever meet. Hangs around after the 2nd show every Monday and'll sign about anything. I keep getting tempted to buy a Les Paul just to have him sign it.

Sixth. . . he's a NICE PERSON.

The last time (I've seen him like 4 times) I went my son (a top notch guitar player) and I were seater against the stage. As we sat there looking up, my elbow was on the stage and his tapping foot kept hitting it. . .The Iridium is a great venue!

Bonus is always that when you see Les Paul you see Lou Pallo and Frank Vignola ( The Frank & Joe Show who is arguably one of the best living guitar players. Frank Vignola would humble the likes of Jimmy Bruno (Google his YouTube) well maybe not quite and plays right up there with Eliot Fisk. There is a synergy that Les Paul brings to people like this.

Finally . . when you are sitting there watching Les Paul you never know who (Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton or whoever) will be sitting in the seat next to you. This place takes on the aura of The Crossroads...one of my favorite REAL late night places ove in Jersey where folks like Clapton go, say ab out 2AM after a show at MSG, to just "play around" till dawn. These guys are to guitar what Tuci is to Opera. . . .

I'm getting the urge to go to the show tomorrow night!

He's a great person who changed the orbit of the earth.

Remind me to tell you a little about the electric guitar sometime. There may be somethings that would surprise you . . . the only instrument that some poor innocent soul just trying to be louder than the drummer up and invented and it changed the entire instrument.

During his radio shows, Paul introduced the legendary "Les Paulverizer" device, which multiplies anything fed into it, like a guitar sound or a voice. This even became the subject of comedy, with Ford multiplying herself and her vacuum cleaner with it so she could finish the housework faster. Later Paul made the myth real for his stage show, using hidden equipment which over the years has become smaller and more visible. Currently he uses a small box attached to his guitar - it is not known how much of the device remains off-stage. He typically lays down one track after another on stage, in-sync, and then plays over the repeating forms he has recorded. With newer digital sound technology, such an effect is available commercially. To this day no one knows exactly how the Les Paulverizer works.

I could ask him this evening . . .

Music Scene Turns Attention to Wisconsin: Legend Les Paul Returns Home for Concert
9 May, 2007

The nation’s music scene turns its attention toward Milwaukee this week as legendary guitarist Les Paul, the Wizard of Waukesha, returns home to play for the first time in decades.

The concert is part of the fundraising effort to support the building of The Les Paul Experience, the largest exhibit project for the Waukesha County Museum. Backed by a number of private and corporate sponsors, including local music product company, Aleken Games, a special dinner and concert starring Les Paul & His Trio will be held on May 10th at the Milwaukee Marriott West Hotel. Les Paul, who will be 92 years-old on June 9th, will play a complete set with his Trio at the event.

Ken Eichstaedt, president of Aleken Games, maker of the music trivia games, Rock & Roll Triviologies, Country Music Triviologies, and the all-new Long Live Rock games, said, “We’ve been a part of the effort for the new exhibit, and as a local company that’s also based in Waukesha, it is our honor to support the museum and sponsor Les Paul’s Homecoming concert.”

Aleken Games is one of the Premier Sponsors for the event and has been advising Executive Director Sue Baker of The Les Paul Experience with marketing ideas and information on how other major music museums and exhibits across the U.S are operated. The Les Paul project at the museum will be a 5,500 square-foot exhibit dedicated entirely to the Wizard of Waukesha.

“We made it a point of going to see Les Paul and His Trio when we were in New York in February for the International Toy Fair. We were launching our new game, Long Live RockÔ, when we learned that Les Paul plays every Monday Night at The Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. It was amazing to see him in person,” Eichstaedt said. “Now, it is almost unbelievable that Aleken Games can be a part of his homecoming concert right here in Waukesha.”

Eichstaedt and Aleken Games have extensive experience working with a number of music museums and exhibits across the U.S. “Our games are sold at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Experience Music Project, The Gibson Museum, The Buddy Holly Center, and The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Smithsonian and others. Naturally, we have an interest in seeing the Les Paul Experience completed and successful. Les Paul is an amazing talent and his contributions to the music industry are legendary.” In addition, Eichstaedt states, ”Anyone who has anything to do with the music industry from all corners of the world knows who Les Paul is, and that’s good for Waukesha and the long-term success of the exhibit.”

Back in the Eighties, a guitar-playing buddy of mine named Tom Blackburn had a device that sounds similar to the "Paulverizer". He called it a "Fripp-In-The-Box", after Robert Fripp. It allowed him to layer multiple guitar tracks and then play live over them. Pretty cool.

Last year as we pulled off the interstate headed to Steve Mackay's house for homecoming
Tim (No_Rice)and I were met with a rather large sign announcing Waukeesha being the
birthplace of Les Paul.

It was very cool, obviously put up by the city as a permanent installation in the median
of the road. I was proud to find that my 13 year old knew who Les Paul is.

Wow, whatta neat thread.

Got my gold top signed @ the Iridium back in 92 or so. As I was walking in, Chet was walking out. I didn't want to bother him. I didn't bother him years later at a party.

He's gone now. I should'a bugged him in New York.

Lou Paula is THE most amazing rhythm player I've ever seen. The fact that he can get across samba's, beguine's and lots of other feels that most people have forgotten is totally amazing. They sure don't need a drummer if he's there!

Another thing that floored me was the fact that the best "tele" sound I've ever heard came from that crazy "recording" model Les was playing the the low impedance pickups.

I'm thrilled somebody else here caught Lou's genius.

Les... Well, for a guy that old with knuckles swollen to disfigurement from arthritis, he play's pretty damn good!

Hey, that Les Paul Recording is one of the most underrated guitars around! My buddy has a white one like the one Jimmy Page has, and every time I go and jam with him, I end up using that Recording. It totally kicks butt!!

That's the Alpine White EDS 1275. Although it would be a total PITA to transport it continues to get rave reviews for performance. I'm in the market for a new acoustic/electric 12 string now and keep getting drawn back to that. It's also interesting but that guitar has been the source of some of the hottest tunes to ever come over the airwaves.

EDS 1275

There was a PBS special about Les Paul the other night. I swear each time I see or read something about him I learn more. Yesterday, while driving in NYC rush hour traffic I'm reading the liner notes of the CD. . . the guy was nothing short of a genius.

By the way, there is a neat article in the current Midwest Airlines in-flight mag. If anyone wants I'd be pleased to scan and post here.

So . . who's up for the Iridium Monday night? I keep thinking I should buy a Les Paul just to get it signed!

I remember as a kid I never missed the Les Paul and Mary Ford TV show.
I think it was only 15 minutes long.
I loved the music.
He was like nobody else.

Oh, good ol' Lester Poulfus ;)

I wish I'll get the opportunity to see this man perform sometime before it's too late, if you catch my drift.

Actually, now that I think about - Les and Erik seem to have a quite a bit in common. Both are passionate about their livelihood, and both have thought very far outside the box to change the status quo.

We all know about Erik, but Les is responsible for much more than great Jazz and a certain solid-body guitar. Multi-track recording pretty much started in his garage, and as I understand it he was responsible for the first uses of close miking (now a standard for studios) and overdubbing (think Def Leppard, lol).

Very smart guy - another's whose hand I'd like to shake.

I'll be in NYC next week, but not on Monday. Darn.
