To make a short story long...
I bought a set of H-B bags for my 06 Uly from a guy at ADVrider.com. Here's the story: He bought an 06 Uly with H-B bags. The latch broke and he took it to his dealer to get it replaced. They took 6 months to do it. In the mean time, he sold the Uly and sold me the bags. I got the bags and ended up with two left bags. The dealer gave him a new bag and it was the wrong one after 6 months. The guy I bought it from didn't notice as he didn't have the bike anymore. I sent the bag back to the guy and he took it to the dealer. Now the dealer has had it for 2 weeks and still nothing. Is there anything I can do since I bought these used or does the original owner have to deal with it? What can I/we do?

How far up have you gone in the dealership? Have you talked to the GM yet?

It's unfortunate that the original owner didn't realize the error before he sold you the bags. The other option is to list each of them on e-bay and then purchase a complete set.

Thanks. I'm trying to have the seller contact Buell about the issue. It seems his dealer acts put out to have to deal with this.

I think you're going to have to go through the dealer. I've been poised and ready to resolve this for the last week and never got any info. Please realize that not knowing any names, addresses, details or such makes it tough craft a RRP (rapid resolution plan).

I've been in finals the last week and just haven't had the time to pry for info. The dealer is the best route.

It's an easy fix that should take less than 96 hours.

NAMES . . .yes, it's a fact. In order for me to help AT ALL . . I need "ACTIONABLE FACTS".

Imagine the conversation when I call some of my biggest fans at customer service . . .

"Hi, this is Court. There is a Buell owner who had a terrible mistake and needs to have a saddlebag corrected".

"What his name?"

"I have no idea".

"No problem, we'll address it to General Delivery".

"What town is it going to?"

"Beats me".

"Hey...shit happens, we'll send it to his dealer. Who's the dealer?"

"I dunno".

"We can deal with in. . just give us the city"

"Haven't a clue"



This is a simple problem to fix and trust me when I say there are no black helicopters circling whatever town you live in conspiring to keep you from getting the problem solved.

I've been a bit "otherwise engaged" working full-time and taking finals over the last week . . I've not had time to mine information.

You can do this through the dealer. But they will need to know a factual description of the problem. Once they get that, there's no reason you can't be all fixed up, I say again, in 96 hours.

If the dealer can't handle it drop me a note with your VIN, name, mailing address, phone and the name and contact number of your dealer and I'll have this baby solved pronto.

I do not work for or have any affiliation with Buell or any authority to speak or act on their behalf.

I do have a ton of common sense and some experience resolving customer issues. Let's get this solved. . . then we'll beat'em up!

I guess I should have worded that better. I was just trying to find out the best way to resolve the issue. I wasn't going to beat up anyone. "Get out the gloves" was being used as a figure of speech and not meant literally. I just know that the gentleman that I bought them from had a terrible time getting this taken care of and it didn't sound like he was making head-way on this new issue. I wasn't asking you to take care of it for me,I was just asking for the right steps to do it myself if possible, since I am a second party. BTW, the issue has been supposedly resolved today after the GM at the dealer got involved. Sorry to bother you if I did. I just thought that this was the place to ask such a question. If this is still an issue, I'll get you the entire story with names and dates. I know there are no black helicopters flying over my house keeping my bags from me as I have my entire home covered with tinfoil and rubber.

Didn't bother me one little bit . . just frustrating when I can get parts on the way to New Zealand 11 minutes after someone posts and kept waiting for the info here that never came.

Your dealer should be able to take care of you pronto. I just so happen to know where a WHOLE LOT of bags are waiting to be shipped.

Court, is anything being done to beef up the latches? The thin plastic is clearly underengineered & your picture of a room full of new bags would seem to warrant a proper fix.

20,000 miles on mine, and they're being used daily (opened and closed multiple times)in temps ranging from the teens to above 100. Mine are fine. Maybe they're not so "clearly" under engineered.

The latch is not "under engineered" it's been in use for years with no problems.

The problems, in my mind, seem to be related to SOME Ulysses and SOME latch combinations.

If the problem were JUST the latch, they have been manifest several years ago.

If I were a Buell owner, I'd not be too worried.

For now, vigilant inspection and judicious use would appear warranted.

My latches have been fine, but I've been careful with them ever since reading about the issues with some.

Court, I hadn't been able to inspect the bags before I bought mine; but, when I saw them I identified the latch as a potentially weak link to watch & treat carefully ie vigilant inspection & judicious use. With less than 2000 miles of mostly empty use mine made a loud pop as I prepared to get on the bike in 30+ F degree temperatures. The center plastic piece of the latch was cracked about 2/3 the way across its width. The bag & latch had been carefully treated & never closed with anything in the mating surfaces & not even used to carry enough gear for a long trip yet.

The dealer had a bit of delay ordering a fix because they said there had been a recall or special fix developed by Buell to prevent replacing so many complete bags. Everyone in the HD shop who looked at the latch, all who worked in parts or service including the owner, felt it too flimsy to hold up under normal use (mine is the first Ulysses sold by this dealership). The latch kit arrived, was installed & I've enjoyed riding the bike since.

When I read you don't think it was/is a problem & you and others don't think they are underengineered I decided to take another look at the hinge to see what I was missing. I've used many bags, plastic, fiberglass, cloth, leather & metal, without any problems before & made my living developing, testing & accepting equipment so thought my initial eyeball analysis was reasonably well founded. I grabbed the handiest "precision measuring device" (a carpenter's square) & measured the closest bag first -- the one with the original latch. The center hinged area has a piece of flat plastic that I don't know the strength specs of; but, it is only about 7/8 inch wide & less than 3/32 inch thick. To me that seems like not much material of any kind to hold the forces generated by a pretty hot bike that is advertised, & hopefully designed, to be useable on pavement & off. Interesting to me, & maybe to you, the new latch was considerably beefed up from the original. Although it still doesn't look super strong to me & it is not any wider; it is much thicker, no longer flat; but, instead, has several reinforcing ribs that should make it much stronger. I would probably have designed a different fix; but, the new latch has to be far superior to the original. I think all the old ones should be replaced before they leave people "holding the bag", assuming the new latch holds up. VR Yours

Excellent observations and good information.

We're not at the end of resolving this.

My concern, previously expressed, is that the problem be solved, not the symptom.

One element that troubles me is that these exact same latches have been in use for some time. It was not until the bags were mounted on the Ulysses that the problems became manifest.

I suspect (and have not one shred of actual data) some sort of bike/bag interface is at the root.

Smart people, I'd be willing to bet, are hard at work.

I own a Ulysses with 2000 miles on it and the latch broke. Thanks to Court I have a new one installed. I understand that they are on there 3rd design on the latches. Mine broke because I had something in the way when I closed them. I feel that they broke way to easy. Love the bike, and the bags and thanks to guys like Court, love the whole Buell family. Now who can get me a set of those heated grips for my bike?

I agree though. I like the heated grips for the "middle seasons" like those early spring days and late fall days when you don't have gloves (to quote my wife - "dummy, you should have put them in your pocket!") and can't get home before the sun and temperature drops.
