Court, Is the 18-200 VR really worth the $900 it goes for?? Got some extra coin and it looks like the real deal to me. But I know very little. My niece and nephews have had it with my crappy pictures of interesting places and have convinced me to get a real camera. Have a Nikon D80?? on the way from nieces husband. He upgraded to D200?? | ||

Paul, the answer to your question is "it depends" Those Nikon lenses are very nice, sharp all that good stuff BUT it has to fill a need for you. As far as taking good pictures, the camera is almost of no consequence. I take nice shots with my Olympus point and shoot film camera with a 35mm lens and people say "nice shot, what kind of camera did you use" doesn't matter i just know how to use it. So, by all means get a nicer camera BUT also do some study on the HOW of taking good pictures. learn he basic of good composition and what the F stop and shutter speed do. Lots of good books out there. and if you have the time $900 bucks on a basic photo class would likely give you better pictures than the lens | ||

Paul: First . . . read Dave Gess' post . . he's an accomplished photog.  Second . . . what lens is the D80 coming with? The D80 is part of the Nikon "Pro-sumer" series and they generally come with some fairly good glass. Third . . . I've not shot the new VR (the $900 one) yet. The one I use is about $1,600 and the new one was introduced to hit a middle ground. The one thing I learned about lens is that the saving money is better applied to things like condoms than lens. Fourth . . and the big BUT WAIT . . CAVEAT. Paul Rogers bought the Canon VR equivalent (they intro'd a new mid-range at the same time (I have tests I'll post or send) and it produced EXCELLENT results. ACTION PLAN: 1) Do nothing - see what the D80 has and get good with it. 2) Buy this book.  3) Rent the lens you intend to buy first (I can help you here). That help? Court | ||

Thanks for the info, the care package from my niece arrived, the D80 came with everything plus. gadget bag, spare battery, quality UV filter and a nikkor 18x135 zoom lense and a nikon photography book. only thing missing is a tripod and flash. Derek also said the photos turn out better if the motorcycle is not moving before the shutter is snapped. Hard to believe this thing doesn't shoot in VGA mode tho?? This marks the first time that any of my nieces or nephews have given me something of value, ususally I've been starting them off with something like this. | ||

Sit tight on the flash . . .it's going to be one of your next (you'll learn why you need the SB-800) big $$ outlay. | ||

Fuji F30 digital point and shoot... 3200 ASA, Color, all the grain that you grew to know and love with Tri-X. I remember when that Tri-X came out... it was like magic... |
