Hi all, hi Court
as it is getting colder now here in Germany I started to look over my Buell literature collection again. And I found a picture from a RR1000 with the later RR1200 wheels and interesting exhaust. Strange I found the same bike in the Performance machine catalog. Here are the pictures. The small black and white is from the PM catalog, the coloured is from a general HD book.
RR1000 PM catalog

on the screen is the riders name: Paul Kelly

RR1000 Racebike

Interesting front mudguard or ?
Now let's hear what Court has to say, I have more pictures to follow
Best wishes to all from Germany

That is cool.
I wonder how hot that exhaust was on the rider?

Did all the older bikes have their exhaust ports on the opposite sides?

I always wanted to put an exhaust like that on my blast. With no under engine shock, it would have really changed the look of the bike, and fixed the problem of dragging the exhaust on the ground...

"Did all the older bikes have their exhaust ports on the opposite sides?"

The initial run of HD powered Buells used XR1000 engines until the supply ran out.

The Buell shown above looks like it uses a modern XL bottom end and XR style heads, though.

I believe the figure was "HD had 50 XR1000 engines laying around" and that's why 50 RR's.

Hi all
the RR1000 used the XR1000 engine, but as far as I know HD had only 48 left and to build 50 Mr. Buell had to buy 2 engines from dealers:-)
The HD XR engine used the Ironhead bottom end and covers, but surprisingly the XR engined Buell has the later style 4 speed evolution primary cover. I've seen that on all the RR1000 and on some XR1000, but I don't know why.

Some are partially correct, none are totally correct.

Those were.....er, "interesting" times during which the element of "creativity and innovation" was the lifeblood of Buell.

One point for you Dana
after my statement I went trough my pictures again and oops there was this picture and some other pictures from different bikes wearing the correct XR cover. But nobody mentioned till now the 17 PM rims, RR1000 normally run on 16 Dymag wheels. The Pm rim first came with the RR1200, altough I've seen a RR1200 with Dymag wheels.
Confusing ? yes
I wonder If you'll find this picture also Dana

Isn't that the 1984? issue of Cycle magazine that featured the BattleTwin? It was the first Buell I ever became aware of.

I still have that magazine somewhere.

I'll give him a call and check in. I missed my cigar at Homecoming last year.

John is an absolute Prince of a guy and has been, since the RR was new, a staple in the Buell community.

There was recently an XR1000 on EBay supposedly being sold by American Iron's editor or some such. Something noted in that ad was that HD offered replacement cases for the XR1000 and that particular bike had the replacement (with the correct VIN).

Might this be the reason for the different looking RR1000 motors?

HD provided me with a set of replacement cases for my XR1000. I don't recall a difference, but am not sure I would have noticed. I'm going to have to look at some pictures.

What a great bike!

Ahhhh.....those precious moments just before an XR-1000 motor lets loose. It never runs better than the last 5 minutes before it grenades.

My "moment" came on a Sunday morning on 10th Street in Topeka, KS.

I thank Christian Okoye and Dion Sanders for my new cases. It's, yet another, greet story in Buell history from those days there were you, I and about 14 other folks. . . . remind me to tell you.

: )

And on eof the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet.

His career, a legend in the short 6 years it spanned, was cut short by a knee injury.

He's living in California and keeping busy.

I have pictures of Dion Sanders from that night as well. He appeared deck out in a red velvet suit with red loafers. He's a guy that requires you to get past the initial "WOW. . what a goof" impression to figure out that he's as smart as he is a gift athlete.

Nice folks and we spent a couple days for a great cause.
