I've been told this is the section to go for this answer. I have an XB12Ss and currently I am adjusting the suspension on it for me and there are just over 2 lines showing on the fork tubes above the upper triple clamp, is this correct or should it be right on 2? The owners manual doesn't mention the lines and I currently don't have a service manual. The link to the current discussion with a picture is here:

Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Please do me a favor and get the service manual. Buell does an INCREDIBLE job of providing very detailed explanations and walking you through the set-up.

The manual is readily available from any dealer. I suspect Badweb sponsoring dealers have them in stock.

Buell worked hard for years to get the manual releases to coincide with the bike releases. See if this stuff bears out what I say and helps you any. . . . thanks for asking. Not a bad response time, eh?

Court,

FYI -- I've told Buell CS this and they were aware -- the 2006 Uly Owner's Manual and Service Manual do not say the same thing about suspension settings.

Noted.

I'll send them a copy of this thread tomorrow.

Did you complete the form in the manual and send it in?

If not, let me know and I'll get details from you and submit to TechPubs.

Thank you.

Thanks for the response. I'm not opposed to getting the service manual, just havn't had the time or need yet (just got the bike a month ago). I'll probably pick one up this winter or early next spring/summer. Still, the question hasn't been answered, what are the number of lines that are supposed to be showing on the fork tubes? I'm assuming the service manual will tell that, not the owners manual, I have that and it doesn't. Don't think I not grateful for the reply, it's just that I'm trying to get this thing working before I put it away for the winter (season is pretty much done here in CNY for me).

Thanks again.

Jim,

You would ask me that wouldn't you : ) I've had great success when speaking with Buell CS and the guy I was speaking with told me which one to use and I can't remember which one I was told to use.

Anyway, I can't remember because I don't really use the book setting for anything other than baseline settings and I excuse myself to a nice secluded spot of twisties and tune to personal taste. Sorry, but Buell CS was great in this matter -- I suck as a listener.

Unless you're the 5'7" 160lb test rider (who is that guy anyway?) I'd recommend tune it to two-up touring recommendations and adjust from there. That's a great place to start and you'll learn your preferred setup from this baseline -- I'd also recommend taking notes. Find yourself a nice, hopefully empty, piece of twisty and fine tune it to your personal taste.

I've tuned, tuned, and tuned on the Uly and for me it's about as good as it'll get in stock form. I will be making some changes to the front in the future to eliminate some of the silky smoothness that most folks like : )

1/8 turns can make noticeable differences. 1/4 turns can make very noticeable differences. 1/2 turns can surprise you : )

I hate to admit this, but I would screw that up. I have no sense of the relation between the adjustment of the knobs and the feel of the bike. I don't really even know what the bike is supposed to feel like.

Isn't that it under "number of lines" in the chart?

It's not the preload that I'm looking for. The lines I am referring to are the alignment lines on the tubes themselves. If you look in a service manual under the section of installation of the forks there are probably pictures or comments on the alignment lines of the fork tube (to make sure each fork tube is at the right height in the triple clamps). I just not sure if the 2006 XB12Ss has something mentioning different locations for different riding styles or weight. Currently I have 2 full lines showing and 1/3 of space before a third line if there is a third one. Before taking everything apart I just want some heads up to see if the service manual states that the tubes should be flush on the second line in the clamps or somewhere else. Others have mentioned that their forks are on the second line, if that is the case then my "light" feeling front end would make sense because my geometry is now off with the forks raised in the triple clamps. I know my CR250 dirt bike is sensitive to fork placement so I am assuming the XB will be too.

Thanks.

Visit your local dealer and take a gander at the new bikes, note the number of lines exposed on them? : )

do your forks not have the groove with the ring(kind of like a c clip, but not. not sure what to call it)

i pull my forks out, and when i go to put them back in they get pushed up as far into the top triple clamp as they will go until the ring hits the spot it is supposed to rest against to set your height and then you tighten the bolts. simple as that. you push it through till it stops, and thats it, done. no adjusting them at all that i know of

Ahhhhhhh. . . . the question **I THOUGHT** you asked had to do with suspension adjustment, to wit:

quote:

I am adjusting the suspension

Ergo, I posted the detailed chart of how many lines, etc.

For Fork installation, you need to go to page 2-52 of your 2007 Manual (P/N 99490-07Y) where you will find a detailed explanation.

Failing that, I can have someone, as they are crating a bike today, shoot a picture or just simply ask John where he sets them when he puts the font forks on. : )

Hope that helps....off to school this week.

Thanks for the info, mine are not on the second line. I will adjust them so they are flush with the second line and see what difference it makes. The bike is never unstable, it's just very easy to lean over.

Thanks again.
