Okay....plans have been slightly modified and I am going to roll out an S-2 that's pretty much been sitting for 3 or 4 years. NJBuell, Phil, is takin on the task of bringing the baby back to life. Me?...I say it needs darn near nothing, add fuel and go. I'm going to have Phil start at one end and go to the other to get it ready for a "near 1,000 mile day". What would you look at? Sitting for three or four years, eh? Shame on you, Court. Pull the tank, drain and discard the non-combustable swarf that remains and clean the petcock pickup spiggot. Drop the float bowl (maybe easier to remove the whole carb) and clean the swarf from it's belly then remove and clean the jets with compressed air, solvents, or torch tip cleaners as deemed necessary. Change the engine oil and filter. Oil doesn't degenerate over time (think how long it was in the ground) but there's *some* benefit (mostly psychological) from removing moisture that's accumulated over four years of countless condensation cycles inside your engine's cases and oil tank. Running the bike for a good thrash to operating temperature will accomplish the same thing, but I digress. Change the oil in your trans too, if it helps your sense of personal wellbeing. Do change your fork oil, though. Examine it for discolouration. Having said that I just remembered WP forks don't have rubber internals to break down over time spent soaking in oil. Maybe just ensure the seals are still holding oil and go ride the thing. Do change all the brake fluids and replace with fresh, bleeding appropriately. If you've got stainless lines, that should be all that's required. With rubber lines, check for checking a oxidation of the exterior and flexing or bulging when pressurised. Replace as necessary. How're the tires? Any "weather checking" on the sidewalls? If so, treat yourself to some new generation Bridgestone 020's or Dunlop 220's or Avons or Michelins or Pirellis or.... Show me a bad tire made today. You can't. While you've got the wheels off, check the bearings for wear. If they check out and the seals allow, slide a grease gun's needle fitting past the lip and offer a few shots of fresh grease. Assuming belt tension's correct when you parked it, give it a quick visual for defects. Though I'm guessing they last just fine in a cool dry place. Anyone know different? How's the battery doing? Four years is a long time to go untended. If it's been routinely trickle-charged it's likely just fine. If not, it may require recharging or replacing. Good time to fit an Odyssey and enjoy the cranking amps of modern maintenance free batteries like you've never seen before. That's what comes most immediately to mind. I tried an Odyssey battery in the S2 some years ago - supposed to fit "Buells", however, the +/- locations were opposite of the stock battery. Since I didn't feel like playing with new, longer battery cables, I returned the battery. Is there a part# that will fit the S2 now? And more importantly - do they come in black as a proper MC battery should?  I'd check the brake calipers and clean dust off the pistons. Maybe sand the pads and the rotor for a fresh bedding in. Clean and lube the air filter and make sure the filter fits tight to the backing plate. Check the ground strap, clean and tighten. Check the electrical breakers. Maybe replace the whole bunch - cheap insurance. New style "Y" front exhaust hanger. New, beefier primary chain tensioner. I would no matter their state replace the tires. Cheap compared to possible consequences of failure ... Henrik | ||

Henrik, When I replaced my S2 battery I used the "stock" battery from the dealer. It's a proper black color and has been working great for 1.5 years now. | ||

Good point and thanks to all for the help last night. We've got stuff on the way from Nallin, Buell and Al Lighton. I was laughing by the time I got home at 9:00AM. Each time I spoke to another Bueller, starting with Martin (Henrik's asst) at about 5:00 until FMJH at about 9:30 everyone had an "oh, yeah....while you;ve got it open you might want to...." With a little luck Phil should have it wrapped up by about 2006.  I've left the stock 1995 shock and rear swingarm...anyone know any reason not to? Just couldn't see taking the time to take that on at the moment. I can't wait to ride this thing! Court | ||

Or......just have your S2 detailed to a high luster finish. Lease/purchase a Hummer (Navigator or other gas hog) and rent/buy a high end trailer. Trailer up your S2 and pack your wallet with oil company credit cards then set the GPS for RA. Just remeber to pull into a Wall-Mart a 100 miles or so from RA unload your S2 and ride it to the track....only in America can you get chicken at a hamburger stand......(WTF?) | ||

Court Had a conversation at March Madness with Erik about the shock and swingarm recalls.. Check all welds on the swingarm if it does not have the continuous welds... Stay away from salt with the shock.... Remind me to tell you the story some time... | ||

I have a Hawker Odyssey on the S-2.The posts are correct and it is black,but its smaller in width and length. It has been in service since September 2002. | ||

Stock shock: That would be a WP shock - right? Max at Traxxion warned me that the shock shaft *might* break. It'll start with a hairline crack, which hopefully will wear on the shock seals so you *may* see a tiny bit of oil seepage - hopefully before the shock shaft goes. In other words - if you stay with the stock shock, be sure to inspect carefully and regularly. However - with you trying to max out the credit cards, what stops you from dropping another couple of $$ on a new shock. I'm sure Al would be more than happy to set you up with a nice unit ... shock that is On the swingarm, you already know what to look for; if the powdercoat bubbles up on both sides of the welded on strut support - do something about it. Oh, and stop by my place and borrow my Propadded stock seat before you go Henrik | ||

Thanks Brad and Michael for the battery info. I have the S2 on a Battery Tender, but it's 3 years old now, so before I get it back on the road I'll probably go ahead and replace. I'd like the higher cranking Amps ... just 'cause, but the red color and terminal issue has kept me from changing. Michael would you happen to have a part # for that battery? Thanks Henrik Ah, never mind - got it: 1200 S1 Lightning 96-99 PC545MJ *2 1200 X1, S3, S3T, M2 ALL PC545MJ 1200 S2, S2T, RR1200, RS1200, ALL PC545MJ RSS1200 1000 RR1000 87..... PC545MJ As you can see from the part # Odyssey are recommending the same battery for the S2 and the S3. IIRC that ain't gonna fly since the battery posts should be opposite for the 2 bikes. It's funny to see Motor Co. reps call literally 5 minutes after Phil hangs up with you related to a newly discovered malady. Court, I must say this is a task indeed. Your bike is coming along nicely, the only problem being the isolator bracket like we talked about. After talking to you I was able to get around it and got the entire center of the bike done. As I write, the bike is on my lift with the back wheel off awaiting the rear wheel bearings and belt. So far, so good. Call me sometime tomorrow, I will go into more detail then. You must have thought I was getting lazy at work or something to bring this one on. HA! Phil | ||

be prepared to replace the rubber in the calipers and master cylinders -- changing the fluid should do it, the those poor seals may be pouting, big time, if they've been sitting that long (specially in what passes for atmosphere in a large urban area) | ||
