Hey Southern! Good to see you posting. Blake has been out of town, but is aware of the issues. We hope to have them all resolved soon.

Hope all is well with you and your family!

Here's a workaround fix for the Last Day Link.
Paste this URL in the "Open Location" window instead of hitting the Last Day Link (or just click the link below).: )

quote:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/boar d-search.cgi?method=last&number=1&units=1440&tree= ON&where=all

What seems to work is to replace "discus/search.cgi?" with "discus/board-search.cgi?" in the URL.
(Oops, in my my original post, I mistyped board-search as beard-search in the previous sentence. Of course searching my beard won't fix the broken link or get you to the Last Day Search either).: (
Thanks to the subsequent posters who spotted the gaffe and verified the fix to the URL.

Ugh, I did not realize how much I rely on the Search page! I always perform a "new since last search" search.

Based on Sparky's workaround, it looks like there is a link mismatch on the Search page.

There can be two possible, quick solutions:

1) Copy the "board-search.cgi" file to "search.cgi" file. This will match the expected "action" method on the <form> tag of the search page and should allow the search page to work again;

2) Modify the Search page by changing the "action" method on the <form> tag to be "board-search.cgi" rather than "search.cgi".

The former solution would be my approach because it is just a file copy. If this solution is later not desired, just delete the copied file and it's back to the previous state (of not working! lol).

Surely this can be corrected before Blake gets back?!

How to get tech and how-to posts off the general xboard, as requested, and onto knowledge vault?
I've noticed far better response to posts in the xboard asking for tech help than in the kv (including some who post in both to see where they get a response).
Could there be an xb section of the kv? I mean, the Tubers don't go as much into the kv - most of the posts are in the old school buell section. And the Thumper forum has a Blast KV section. From the flashing red banner on the xboard, it looks as if there is a real problem with the structure of the forum for xb tech posts. How to organize this? I mean, there is also crossover whereby a Ulysses rider could benefit from the xb tech posts and vice versa... so the global KV seems good, but still, everyone keeps posting tech questions in the xboard (including me once,when I got no reply in the KV post!).
I dunno - just something I noticed. Other forums have different sub-forum categories, but none seem to work a lot better or worse than this. At least the search function here on BWB rocks,and you get real results!
Phew. Was I ranting, or just rambling?...

I feel the KV is too broken down and too complex. I read just about every single post on badweb, but the 2 sections I don't check at all are the KV and Storm Fronts that aren't in my area.

I find with the KV is that because its too precise, that if you aren't sure what something is, you have no idea where to post it. Also because of this setup I find it harder to keep track of new posts, vs the Xboard I just click the one link, and the newest posts are on top, no digging around. I understand why the KV is setup like it is, but it just dosen't work in my opinion

Blake,
first of all, thank you for a great forum. It works well enough as it is, the info is there to find if one searches long enough, and the search function is more successful at good, useful results than any other forum I've visited.
I am only pondering options for re-organizing with you because of the "we are on our knees here" issue on the XBoard. You want to get the tech posts off the xboard, but no one seems to post there or to look there for posts, never mind to offer assistance (well, not "no one," but not enough folks).
I think the sections are good on BWB, with several forums in each section. I also think that simple is best.
Breaking it down into what people post here, you could say that all the stuff on BWB belongs in either:

a social section (general chat, meets, intro for newbies, etc);

a section on Buell bikes (general biketalk, tech stuff, mods and other how-to's, etc);

a marketplace (for sale/wanted/trades, etc);

then there's a section about BWB for this sort of thing (suggestions, etc), for how to post stuff, for the sponsors, etc.

The only snag is that it's great to have the separate sub-forum on Blasts, on Tubers, on XB's, on Ulysses, on 1125's... but that is the one snag that will trip you up: either all tech posts have to go together, with the bike type in the post title, or you have a tech section for each different type of bike and the knowledge gets spread out everywhere (an S1 owner couldn't get a general maintenance tip from a Blast owner about some universal issue, for example).
You kind of have a hybrid now: Thumpers have their KV section, then everything else is (I guess) supposed to go into the central KV. But if you have a tech problem on your Tuber, are you going to post in the KV or in Old School? What would you do for best results?

Massive moderator/admin action needed to re-train all members (move posts that are in the wrong place, for example, until people started to get it right)?

That, combined with a "Sticky note" post to educate all as to how/where to post.

I think the KV is so great with all the universal issues (gear, apparel, oils, tires, whatever)... and I love the breakdown by bike system (electrical, fuel, chassis, etc). So if only everyone would post their how-to tips and their tech woes in the KV, it would be visited a lot more, and we could all help each other even more. Again, with type of bike indicated clearly in the post.

No system is perfect. It just looks as if you need to get specific bike owners, mostly XB's but maybe also the others, to use the KV. So not much change to the forum structure, but changing people's habits. Training. Education.... ?

We've tried pestering folks to post in the KV. Guess what we get in return. Outraged indignation. Some people are just so full of themselves to where the whole world is only there for them, "me, me, me, me." It just doesn't work. If everyone would pitch in and help, it might. Peer pressure is powerful. But with just the custodians working to shift tech posting to the KV, it just doesn't work.

Thanks for the very thoughtful suggestions. Someday we hope to have a pre-formatted form for technical posts that will direct the post to the appropriate section.

I think that it may be a good idea to add a X1 only page in the old school buell forum. You have one for the m and the s but not the x1. But that is just my thoughts, love the site though. I am new to the site and everyone is being SOOO helpful and I really appriciate it. Thanks for the site and thanks for everyone on the site. Thanks, Matt Tully

Make a left wing and a right wing political area for people to talk smack to and about each others ideologies.
That way we can keep the quick board free for random non bike non political banter.

Chippy, I think that would only increase political discussion in here. You are not forced to browse political threads if you don't want to read them. They usually all end up in the backfire section anyway.

Left wing chat page #1

Left wing chat page #2

Left wing chat page #3

Sorry, I don't know any right-wing forums. The only reason I know of the left winger ones is that they often come up as a subject of cable news shows on Fox News for the outrageous and hateful commentary that is proffered there.

I did once try contributing to the forum at mydd.com, but my 100% factual/informative posts were immediately censored, some removed entirely. Nothing that tended to contradict the preferred partisan agenda there was appreciated, no matter how benignly factual.

Where is the outrageous and hateful commentary: on the left-wing chats or on Fox News?

Gads. . . . I just spent 5 minutes trying to wade through that and I can see why. Facts would derail any one of those three websites. Hard to believe that anyone who talks like that could be the lest bit phased by "torture", real or imagined.

In the name of balance, however, we must all recognize that words are twisted and used by both the left side scoops and the right side scoops to push an agenda, to propagandize and try to convince others of the truth as we each see it. We all try to make a point in a debate by focusing only on the black or the white. It is intelligent and thoughtful to take a careful look at both sides of an issue, and all the grey nuances in between. But it makes for a lousy "news/entertainment" show. Fox and Olbermann/Maddow wouldn't do so well if they had to give equal time to all sides.
Non-thinking people are easily swayed by politicians who reduce an issue to white/black, on/off, for/against. It's an easier message to comprehend for someone who is not carefully using his/her brain to get into the issues.

But we are evolving away from "making a better Badweb," aren't we!

Suggestion: Link up the sponsors by model(s) supported. This way new users can look locate a sponsor to do business with that will carry parts, mods, etc. for their particular bike.

i love badweb but it needs to be revamped for the new age of message boards. for example you cannot subscribe through email to a specific topic, only to an entire forum.

it seems as though badweb could benefit from stepping into 2009
