Well don't sneeze, I have this bad habit of saying 'God Bless You.'

I have to agree to some degree with Snail on this one. I do tend to say 'you are in my prayers when a fellow rider is down, but religious discussion much more than that can become a problem because we probably do not believe in the same things. I am a God fearing Christian that hopes he keeps us all safe in our adventures, but I am not going to beat it over your head. I believe that the most unused lesson that Jesus taught was the one about not judging others.

"Lowflyer, I think you are exaggerating my point regarding profanity. It would seem you are suggesting that by encouraging the use of profanity I am solititing sexual favors. For instance, if I use the F word in a sentence I would be seeking phone sex with Pammy. Not so, or at least not my intention."

I have no idea what any of this means. I suggest no such thing, and I never addressed your point on profanity. I am in favor of the filter.

"I have no objection to references to religion, for instance if you were to say you felt the Buell motorcycle is the Holy Grail of bikes. But I do object to be preached to, or sneered at, or held in low esteem based on my beliefs."

The title of this topic is "Keep Religion In Church." I sort of take that literally. Though my words mostly belie my feelings in a religious sense, I do carry my religion everywhere. I just don't take kindly to being told to leave it at the door as you don't like being beat on the head with it. I see religion as a 'treat others as you would be treated' sort of deal. I don't see how you can draw a distinction between mentioning a prayer for someone (okay) and having a religious discussion (not okay).

I really think this stuff can be mostly self-policing. What get's out of hand can be handled like it is with any other discussion. I am opposed to eliminating religion as a topic of discussion.

Oh and the other thing is that everybody keeps mentioning that "this is a motorcycle board bla..bla..bla..." Let me just say a big NO SHIT to that. However, if you strip this place of everything that is not motorcycle related and admonish anyone for posting non-bike-related information, you would not have the community that exists today. We all came because of the bikes, but a lot of us stay for the people (personalities) in here.

I just feel that my religion, like sex, is personal and should not be a matter of public discussion.

At least not on a motorcycle board.

Same here !!

I think Philly's got it right; no preaching. Should religion come up as a part of the story - no problem.

Same here !!

here I am in a discussion about religion, and Jehova's Witnesses ring my door bell. Coincidence ... I think not

Best way to deal with Jehova's Witnesses is to anwer the door drunk, naked, and singing hymns.

Isn't that the way one always answers ones door? Although, I prefer AC/DC...

Religion is a tough one. Most people can not hold a non-emotive argument so the topic is best "avoided"

That being said here is one of my favorite religious quotes.

"I like God but have issues with his fan club"

Report back.

If I have the time myself, like to invite them in and waste as much of their time as possible by asking lots of stupid questions. I really prefer to do this to the LDS folks though. If I don't have time to waste, I'll answer the door, politely make an excuse to go back into the house saying that I will be right back, and then just leave them hanging. If they knock again, I will go to the door, pretend not to recognize that they have been waiting, and repeat.

This is more fun to me than would be exposing myself to strangers.

Last time LDS came to my house, I held them for about two hours asking about the golden plates and the planet I would get when I die among many other things. At one point, they said they had another appointment to go to, but that they would like to come back. I said, "Sure thing."

They came back the next day with one of their "supervisors." That guy was quite a bit better versed and came armed with a DVD that he asked me to play. When it was over, he asked if we could pray about it. I said "yes, but I will have to lead us in prayer since it's my house." It went downhill from there as I took full advantage of the natural aversion most people have to interrupting someone else's prayer. I haven't seen them since.

R/T,

I believe I read that on a bumper sticker once. It was on the back of a Subaru Forester next to a faded Gore-Lieberman campaign sticker and below the "Celebrate Diversity" rainbow.

'Flyer:

I'm not much on bumper sticker philosophy, but Skyguy's quote is still not a bad statement in my opinion.

But I was really referring to his first sentence. It describes our experience on this board over the past few years.

And it also echoes something my dad told me many years ago. You know, until I was about 18 I thought my old man was the dumbest thing that ever walked upright on his hind legs. By the time I came back from my Navy years it was amazing how much he'd learned...

Once, at the Buffalo NY airport, while rushing thru to pick up my girl friend, I found myself being approached by a brace of Krishna's! ( Not sure brace is right group term, & Yeah, Krishna's implies multiple gods, but you get the idea, followers of, wearing yellow. ) Knowing I was late, & somewhat desperate to not lose time, I fixed them with gaze & smile & loudly called, "Have you heard the word of God, lately? He can Save, you know!"

It's like I had a force field, they bounced off & we each went on our way.

True story, I swear to Odin.

I feel that arguing religion in an online forum is silly & most probably futile. Still....
amusing tales of prostelytizers is surely fair game.

I have 3 good ones, ranging from: happened to me, to friend, heard funny story don't know if true. If Humor is cool on this thread, & subject ok, I will tell.
( like you could stop me from telling bad joke, Heck even the moderators couldn't stop me from

One more clarification of my point and then I'm through arguing this one: I am quite simply opposed to limiting topics for discussion. I don't think people bitching at one another over religion is any more offensive, petty, or heated than the arguments I have seen in here over friggin' motor oil or racing.

I think Blake and others are pretty good at policing this place as it is. I know, I have been policed a number of times. Topics whereby people generally know that other people have a tendency to lose control are most usually avoided naturally.

I say let the chips fall where they may and use the rules to set the tone for discussion instead of the topic.
