Dang, don't give up that easy, sheesh !!!

Reg, I accept that you disagree with me, but I think you may re-read what you are disagreeing about. I merely offered an explanation for why I thought Badweb essentially bleeps the "bad" words. I have absolutely no qualms using expletives within my written or spoken word. Anyone who has ever had conversation with me can attest to that. Does it bother me that Badweb uses red dots verses the real word? Hell no. I run a motorcycle shop and have heard all the expletives and can manage the creativity to insert whatever nasty verbage may be due in a sentence. Sometimes I can even make up a better word or phrase. My goal, typically, is to convey a (not so meaningful)thought or meaningful message, when I post and usually I can do that without expletives. But I am sure not offended when I see them.

But as I said in my post above, Some folks would like to look at this site from their jobs and I believe the 'cuss' filter makes it easier for that to happen. I could be wrong.

Jiminy Christmas, I can ramble on...2nd post...MUST...FOLLOW...RULES...

Snail,
How about throwing them up in a vote type poll, you as appointed moderator of this thread could appoint someone to generate the voting booth and tally the results like was recently done on the Buelling guy/gal voting. You format the statements and put a 5 point rating, 5 = strongly agree, 4 = somewhat agree, 3 = neutral or don't care or doesn't matter, 2 = somewhat disagree, 1 = strongly disagree.

I'm curious what the additional 7 points are and personally think they'd be worth airing. (In the mean time I'm diving back into craigslist to further a search for a boat to fish on Lake Michigan with.)

Here's a link to the lady voting http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/4062/202468.html?1149868065 and it looks like spreadem started the poll, so it would be poetic if he (Ferris' son) could be volunteered to set up your seven polls. Click his profile and you'll see he doesn't directly follow all the rules hisownself. : )

Gosh darned golly jeeper wilikers. I sure did let myself get out of hand there for a minute. I sure do feel a heckuva lot better for it - you glassbowls.

MikeJ, don't worry about the 2 reply rule, that went west and it's a free for all.
I consider my attempt to poll the members a bad idea, and the remaining seven topics I wanted to discuss will not be presented.

The behavior here in Paul's forum is roughly equivalent with the postings and goings on over at SacBorg. Diarhhea of the Keyboard is a modern affliction and is endemic to most bulletin boards. Being a moderator is akin to herding cats especially with a flock of bikers with a streak of independence.

I would be interested in hearing Snail's other suggestions and I doubt I am alone in that feeling.

Saro has a good idea with the optional language filter. Then everyone is happy.

BTW Saro, Where did you hear the 1000 fleas bit? I have been using "may the fleas of 1000 camels make a home in your ass" for a long time!

Another favorite?

"May you be so rich as to own a home with 100 rooms............... and may you be found dead a different way in every one of them".

Reg,

There is absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with anything in your thoughtful commentary above. It would stand on BadWeB no matter who posted it; it wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

Some self-righteous indignant folk would likely have you believe that I am disingenuously catering to your favor in contrast to my previous behavior in dealing with them. They might be right if in every other post you were to include statements along the lines of or repeatedly implying that "Bush is an idiot" or that "Buells suck."

You know what I mean? - repeatedly even after being asked politely to cool it, intentionally posting combative statements and ignoring the polite requests of custodian(s) to please stop doing so?

Have I ever been overbearing in that regard? Yes, and when I recognize that I have been overbearing or just plain wrong, I've apologized to the unfortunate victim of my uncool behavior.

There is one such specific case where I saw fit to refrain from apologizing for a long time; that only after witnessing a campaign of personal insult and character attack waged publicly on other forums by the "victim."

But even then I recently admitted to being overzealous in my behavior towards that individual, unfortunately - I think you may find this funny in an ironic sort of way - my post was removed by the author of that thread on ATC; actually he deleted the entire thread. The opening remark by the creator of that thread was

quote:

"So whad'ya think...

Of Courts banning from Badweb? Told ya that site & its moderators are a bunch of Nazi's.

It's the only bike site I know of that bans folks for stating opinions that differ from the owners or for talking about products which may not be sponsor related.
.
.
.
...Blake & quite a few of his moderators are simply on a power trip & you either completely agree with them or you are gone.

Four sentences, four lies, or at best one mis-statement and three gross mischaracterizations.

Reg, what also makes a world of difference is for example your thoughtful way of prefacing your opinions with phrases such as "I think..."

One manner of phrasing versus another makes the difference between a presentation of combative "fact" versus thoughtful "personal opinion."

Some folks think that I am an idiot. In some things I surely am. In general, I try not to be. : ) I don't hold anything against those who think I'm an idiot. I have good friends who I feel hold idiotic beliefs.

Speaking of beliefs - lame segue, I know - Interestingly, in lieu of inserting the red dots, the board can be made to refuse to accept any post that includes disallowed wording until it is removed/changed. I really don't like censorship either. I felt it became necessary in an extremely limited fashion after one indignant irate poster saw fit to go off on a horrible tirade of disgusting insult against a particular person and their immediate family. I think the phrase sister - and goat - were used among many others. Interestingly, SacBORG has demonstrated the same exact philosophy.

Like my friend Paul, I am repeatedly frustrated that not everyone feels obliged to live up to the very simple policies of the board or even just a simple straight forward request. I once asked folks to post tech stuff to the Knowledge Vault instead of the XBoard or Quick Board. Some folks just are averse to cooperating when they disagree. You'd have thought I asked some of the folks to saw off their right arm. One fellow used the occassion to deride BadWeB and indignantly state that it was because of that kind of heavy-handed intervention that he intended to cease visiting the site. <sigh> In the end, I gotta just laugh. People sure are funny sometimes.

There occurred here other similar problems with profantiy as described above. Something needed to be done. The site is listed under my name; I tell friends and family about it; I'm kinda fond of it; I am not comfortable with it or me being associated with the kind of filth that some, admittedly few individuals see fit to post on a public forum. The few ruin it for the rest of us.

A friend once advised when I broached the issue to him that "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." I'm standing for what I personally view as common decency. The site policies have evolved with the size, nature and activity of the community here engaged. I've evolved quite a bit too. This place has been a hard lesson in diplomacy, tact and the perceptions and misperceptions inherent in informal written communications.

BTW, I pretty much agree with your take on Buell motorcycles. I've often pleaded that Buell should bring back the lean and mean tube frame Cyclone, my personal preference, on account of my knee smacks even a force intake on an S1, or a re-issued S1 would be outstanding too. I've included that very suggestion in my user profile here where under the field for "How can Buell improve their motorcycles" I state - and it's been there for years now - "Bring back a new and improved version of the old lean and mean M2 and or S1 (4 gal tank, and slimmer tail)."

I like the X1 if the big plastic parts (intake and opposite matching piece) are removed with the Foce intake and carbon fiber filler panels installed in their place, just like Lurch had done on his X1.

Might you be interested in a thread like this one? There are plenty others like it along with a myriad of comments critical of Buell motorcycles, not to mention all the threads dealing with specific problems folks have. We try to help, not tell folks with real problems that they are the source of the problem. If someone really wants help with a problem with their Buell motorcycle, this is a GREAT place to get help.

I've expressed plenty of criticism and complaints concerning Buell motorcycles.
It's all here if you were here to read it.

I've only ever said that my 1997 Buell Cyclone is the best bike in the world for me at this time. There is no best bike in the world. On account of it is a very subjective thing.

I've personally challenged a number of BadWeBrs, most recently including Court and M1Combat, both of whom I consider personal friends of mine, concerning what I deemed excessive fawning glory-speak concerning Buell motorcycles.

I and others here will of course present our own opinions in opposition to those who present their own somewhat low opinions of Buell motorcycles and for instance their contention that the Buell ZTL brake/wheel system is "engineering for engineering's sake."

Mechanical Engineering is something in which I am a qualified expert. Should I hold my tongue when I know for a fact that such contentions are nonesense?

Surely you are not saying that a Buell enthusiasts' forum should squelch the opposing opinions of those who do indeed feel that their Buell motorcycle is the best bike for them and that Buell motorcycles do indeed offer some truly innovative features/technology.

No worries, I know you are not saying that Reg.

Some folks seem to want to make a career out of belittling and deriding Buell motorcycles at almost every turn, the negative nabobs of naysaying. This is not the place for them. I guess that sums up our policy on that issue.

Does that make sense?

Please be careful who you listen to; please judge BadWeB on its content, and me on my own actions rather than on the indignant rantings of a disgruntled few.

I recently trimmed a couple thousand from the ranks of registered BadWeBrs due to inactivity for years. We are currently at over 9,100 registered participants, with around 1,000 posts per week day and a couple hundred or more new registered participants every month.

How many folks are there that see fit to go around publicly decrying the policies and/or maintenance of BadWeB? Statistically speaking, how much of our population consists of contrary uncooperative people. Know any?

Should we expect none to take exception to our policies or how the board is maintained, no matter how sincerely we try to be fair and thoughtful in our maintenance of the site?

I think in user satisfaction, BadWeB ranks well and high. Am I wrong? Have you really given us a fair shot?

You'd make a great custodian. Wanna help us out here?

Sorry for the rather disjointed structure. It insults my sense of good writing too. But I'm lazy and just need to hit the "Post" button so I can go spend some time with my wonderful wife.

God bless everyone and please be excellent to each other. : )

Paul,

Please do post your other points. I'll stick to your requested policies/rules in order to best maintain the integrity of your intentions for the various topics. I gotta admit that I am tickled to know that, in some small way, you now know exactly how us custodians feel when we try to maintain the integrity of the board according to its stated policies/rules.

Seriously, you gotta find some humor in that, don't you?

Skygy - Everyone is never going to be happy anywhere. The regulars here like the filter. It's staying.

The X1 is the best thing I recieved on my 40th birthday and as motorcycles go, is perfect in every sense. I'd offer Kool-Aid, but I drank it all on the way home from the store.

I realize there are diferences among the diferent moto-webs out there. This one needs no survey, retro-fit, or over haul. I am not compelled to explain that any further.

Humor and sarcasm are good fun provided the context isn't tragic.

Blake, I have new appeciation for your feelings on profanity, but are your personal sensitivities getting in the way of others freedom to express themselves?

You keep warning me to be carefull who I listen to, but I like to listen to everyone and then make up my own mind who's most right.

Apologizing for a mistake is a good and proper Christian thing to do, but, it doesn't change the fact that a mistake was made. If the mistake/apology thing is used frequently it becomes a cop out.

As for my other points, I'm not posting them because regardless of how people think about the issues I know they think of me as an adversary, and anything I write will be contested regardless of merit.

Instead, I challenge the members to come up with their own ideas. If they have none, and are perfectly content with the status quo, then it would be a double waste of time for me to present anythng more.

Whew! Lot of typing.

Paul, I don't see you as an adversary. But you do sound a little bit, to me anyway, like a guest standing in Blake's living room and telling him that he isn't doing a good job of running his house and asking all his other guests to tell him how he could do a better job. How does the guests' right to free expression override the man's right to set his own rules in his own place?

I would like to hear your ideas, and, since Blake has made this forum available to you, it's clear that he would, too. But from where I sit, I think you're in a position to suggest, rather than demand, changes. And I'm frankly surprised that you would hesitate to put them forward for fear of being "contested."

If you think that I am sensitive about profanity, you don't know me. I simply refuse to be directly responsible for a web site that caters to the lowest common denominator. If that puts off some folks, so be it.

BadWeB is not hindering anyone's freedoms anywhere. Anyone who wishes may start their own web site and spout off on it whatever vulgarities they wish short of criminal hate-speech or libelous commentary.

What fate do you imagine would befall someone yelling vulgarities in the public square on Sunday afternoon? This isn't a private conversation among a few friends. This is a public, entirely open-access web-site my friend.

Is it ever a cop-out to admit wrongdoing and offer a genuine sincere apology, especially publicly?

To scorn and rebuff repeatedly genuine apology is a cold and hateful, vindictive thing. A person of character will accept a sincere apology with grace and magnanimity.

Beware the people who are never wrong yet frequently point accusing fingers at others.

I know who I am. I am an honest man. Not everyone is. I'm not a greedy man. Some people are. I'm a selfish man, but I'm working on it. Some selfish people don't. I'm not a vindictive man. Some people are. I'm a forgiving man, but I can only take so much. I am flawed. So is every one else save for one. He's the only one who always truly knows my heart. That's good enough for me. I know where I'll be spending eternity thanks to him.

Some people don't believe in any kind of lasting spiritual consequence to their earthly behavior. Other than their own self interests in the here and now, what is there to compel such folks towards honorable behavior? What is to stop such folks from bearing false witness against others when they think they can get away with it? Answer: Nothing at all.

You are darn right Paul, be very careful who you listen to.

Neither the man who's friendship can be bought through favor or money nor the the man who so seeks to buy friendship are to be trusted as a friend. In each case the priority is not friendship; it is either the benefit obtained or the agenda realized that is the true priority of such a "friend." When such priorities come in conflict with the purchased friendship, the friendship will be tossed in the ditch in favor of the real priority, the one that motivated the friendship in the first place, selfishness.

"My loyalty is to my customers, not to you."

A very hard lesson. I've learned it repeatedly and well. It is a big deal. People, especially friends, do indeed matter more than motorcycles or money.

Sorry for the philosophizing. It is all straight from the heart.

The following is nothing more than my own opinion.

Paul,

Can I ask you a question. How is asking you, me or anyone else not to use profanity limiting freedom to express ourselves?

I see it as being curteous and respectful of others wishes.

Points of view are meant to be contested. How else would we find the flaws on either side of the fence.

Blake, speaking from my position down here as the 'lowest common denominator' and a man who doesn't believe in a life after death, I believe in acting honorably toward my fellow man simply because its the right thing to do. I expect no extra-terestrial reward for that.

You and your supporters have made it pretty clear that I don't fit the profile for the guest list to your internet 'home', and I will be excusing myself, and I'm sure I can find the door.

Expecting people to change their values in order to belong to your website may be one of the primary reasons they're leaving.

Co-incidently, #9 was, Leave Religion in Church.

I know you well enough to know that you are not even close to the lowest common denominator. You are in fact are little if any closer than am I.

There is no required profile into which participants here must fit. Folks are simply asked to honor our policies is all.

No one is expecting anyone to change their values in order to participate here.

Who is leaving?

I rarely bring up my own personal faith unless it is directly germaine to the topic of discussion. But it is important to me. You want me to allow free expression of vulgarity, yet you begrudge me the ability to even mention my faith? : ?

I'm not institutionally religious. Those who do leave their faith in church are in my opinion neither religious, nor faithful. I do my best to live my beliefs and lead by example. Sometimes I do okay at that, sometimes I fall from grace.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what seems like indignation and hostility on your part and also your willingness to paint BadWeB with such a broad and cynical brush. I could be misreading you. I'm bad about that sometimes.

Phone talk is much better. : )

I think that is one of the reasons that people have problems with you.
When I read your opinions on the internet, I see an overbearing egotistical arsehole, yet when I talk to you on the phone, you are one of the nicest people I've ever spoken to.
Maybe so much of this shit wouldn't have happened if you had taken a moment to visit X, and talk it out face to face instead of via the internet?
Better state again that it's just my opinion, so it stays normal.
