We're adults, we should be allowed to swear. Swear words give a subtle flavor to a good bike story, removing them is like taking magenta and muave from the artist's pallet.

Your comments? Please keep it brief, and limit youself to one post, and then one rebuttal post. Two posts/member, one short paragraph/post.

We're adults, we should be allowed to swear. Swear words give a subtle flavor to a good bike story,

Adulthood is not the issue. Language that is offensive to some percentage of the population is the issue, and the owner of this board has chosen to not permit its use. I will agree that folks in some other portion of the population feel that they might not be as articulate writing under this restriction, but I for one find the absence of profanity refreshing and worth missing the subtle flavors of that occasional good bike story that the writer cannot tell properly without the use of swear words.

removing them is like taking magenta and muave from the artist's pallet.

I think you’ve got that analogy backwards. Swear words are the color the artist uses when he has no magenta or mauve on his pallet.

Some years ago, Advrider had the same problem, so they wisely (in my opinion) opened up a seperate area called Jo momma where almost anything goes.
I'll put a copy of their rules here.

***

Welcome to JoMomma, YFF!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JoMomma: Liquor in the Front, Poker in the Rear.

A great big Adventure Rider "Howdy" to you, and Welcome

As you may have noticed, JoMomma isn't your typical chat forum. JM is the bar just down the street, or the one you visited on your trip to Sri Lanka. There are regulars and fresh faces. There are the ones everybody knows, and there are folks we rarely hear from. But everyone is welcome.

We do have a few rules here. They are:

1. No nekkid pictures of anyone. If it isn't seen on an American beach, it isn't seen here either.

2. No threats. If you have to sink that low, you probably don't belong here anyway. And threatening a public official will not only get you banned, you just might get a visit from some very humorless types.

3. No Spam. We ain't talking potted meat products here.

4. The moderator's decisions are final. Don't whine about it.

That's about it, but we might throw in a few secret rules now and then to justify being evil nazis.

Now for you new folks:

JoMomma isn't where you bring the wife and kids. Of course, some of the ladyfolk here are a lot tougher than most of the menfolk. Just remember, we've been at this for quite a while now, we aren't gonna change it for you.

If you like it, sit back and watch for a little while. Then introduce yourself. Maybe even tell us a little about yourself. You'll be welcomed in true JoMomma fashion, and probably trashed in the same breath.

If you don't like it, thanks for stopping by. We can't be everything to everybody, and trying would ruin the feel.

Lastly, the moderators are here to do just that: moderate. They try their best to enforce the rules. They might even step in and attempt to break up a fight. That usually ends up in said moderator getting a virtual barstool broken over their head, but they try hard. If you see a violation of the rules, click the "Blame Rider" link at the bottom of the offending post. You might get ignored, but someone will at least look into it.

So come on in, make yourself at home, and grab me a beer while your up, m'kay?

Prohibition didn't work, and stopping people's opinion here isn't working either.
How about our own version of this place, with Paul being the head bouncer?

This is a tough call. I'm in a profession where folks cuss up a storm regularly. I do too, sometimes. However, I feel much better about what I'm saying when I can do it without swearing. A friend of mine drops the F bomb just about every third word when he's worked up. It's comical in its stupidity.

I read a study somewhere, (I don't have a reference, sorry, but I probably got it from /.) that said that when a person cusses, it shows that they're relaxed talking with that person or group.

So I guess my stance would be that I don't think that the filter inhibits discussion on this board at all. Nor do I think that cussing inhibits discussion. I read ADVRider, and I get just as much out of JoMomma as I do out of the rest of the board.

So the only reason to change the way it is right now would be that it inhibits the transmission of information. I, however, don't think that it does. Therefore, I'd have to disagree with the request to remove the filter.

Paul,

That is certainly a fair point to make.

Please consider that BadWeB is intended to be a family-oriented site, somewhere that even the youngsters and family can visit to see what is up in the world of Buell enthusiasts and/or to enjoy the photos and contributions/stories of their loved ones.

If it were just the odd biker tale that made use of colorful language, we would never have felt a need to activate the profanity filter. Unfortunately the issue had become much more pervasive than just the odd biker tale. We've tried deactivating the filter on a couple occasions, but each time it wasn't long before the need to re-institute it became obvious, again, this is from the perspective of keeping the place fit for family oriented viewing. You may recall that for the first few years of BadWeB's existence the profanity filter was not utilized.

Also, I'm pretty sure that most of us can easily decipher the intent behind any little red dots or the odd "eff'n" abbreviation that might appear in the odd biker tale.

We did see fit some time ago to remove "piss", "shit", "ass", and a few others from the filtered list.

What Peter suggests is a good idea. In fact we've been discussing that very idea among the custodians. Unfortunatley I'm not sure how to deactivate the profanity filter for just one topic. I'm not sure doing so is even possible. We will soon be creating a topic for the bickering and other miserableness though so we have a place to move such threads instead of taking them offline entirely. But that is an entirely different issue than what Paul has raised I think.

Thanks Peter for your thoughtful suggestion. It is a good one.

The profanity filter is a good thing.

We all know people that we do not swear around and others that we would not swear around if they politely asked us to do so.

So Blake has asked me not to swear here and that seems reason enough to comply.

The thing about swearing anyway by transposing letters is silly. 26 years in the Navy, I know how to swear. But I also know when and where it is inappropriate.

Is it possible to make a switch for the user's profiles whereby the user could turn it on or off, sort of like the spell checker only for the profanity filter?

Or bring back the R-rated section and make it also switchable whereby users could turn on or off their own browser access to it via a profile switch. Some sites have "rooms" open to invite only or where you have to be approved or authorized to access it away from the general public, that might be another option.

Mikeyp and I probably tie for first place in use of the F-word in spoken conversation, I do however try hard to modify my language when kids and people I don't know are around.

Badweb is a similar situation, where I don't know the majority of the visitors, and as such I don't use colorful language much. And I do like the fact that Badweb is family/work/home friendly.

I also much prefer reading posts where a points are well described and expressed without having to resort to cursing.

Mike,
No way to currently do all but the following of your suggestions:

"Some sites have "rooms" open to invite only or where you have to be approved or authorized to access it away from the general public, that might be another option."

We can do that. Access to the RAN page for instance is only granted to registered members.

However, the same problem still exists, I don't know of a way to alter the filter for
just a specific topic.

FYI: We do have the option to implement queued posting in a specific topic where posts don't show up until/unless approved by a custodian. In fact I've done just that for the Guest Book where posts by unregistered guests must first be approved by a custodian before they show up on the board. Had to implement that in response to some tenacious spammers.

Henrik,
man. I don't think you or MikeyP are even close to winning that title. Catch my drift? : ]

I believe Badweb is what Badweb should be. Not everyone needs to drop F-bombs over conversation at breakfast. Those that do have many other choices for a web home besides Badweb. Insisting on this "priveledge" is very much like insitsing on using fould language in someone's house where that is not allowed.

When I visit Badweb, my kids sometimes come by to see what Dad's up to. Having our standards here doesn't makes my participation an act of hypocracy with regard to some of my instructions to them as a Dad.

I would rather see folks develop their vocabulary than take the easy way out with swearing.

The fewer red dots I see the more seriously I take the author.

As a quick aside, but still within the two-post boundry (I think), I have to comment on something that I find pretty funny:

Here’s the guy who hates all the rules but has finally been give the power by the powers that be, and as he says, he’s now in charge.

The first thing he does with his new power is:

keep it brief, and limit youself to one post, and then one rebuttal post. Two posts/member, one short paragraph/post

Make up a bunch of rules.

(Sorry, Paul, I couldn’t help it. It just made me laugh. I know, you probably did that very thing just to see who would catch on.

I too like Badweb the way it is. I am no saint, and if I felt that all readers were adults with the same outlook in life as me, I can see a lifting of the profanity filter. But this is a public forum and should have the common decency you would expect from any public place. I hate being at a gas station with my kids and a rap enthusiast pulls up, gets out of the car, leaving the door open and the 100w stereo blasting profanity for all to hear for miles. I see no need for it in a public setting. Bill Cosby was one of the funniest comedians to me because he could say the same thing as all the other comedians, but without the cuss words.

"My wife stood up in the stirrups and told very one in the room that my parents were never married!" Bill Cosby "Himself"

My wife and 11 year old daughter read post on this board even though we tend to stick to the C3 page which is mostly communication between friends. We are a family oriented group with two Father - Daughter rides in the last month which we call C3-junior rides. We have even developed a sticker for the juniors.

Last thing, I have posted on Adventure rider and have lurked on Sacborg. If you want to cuss you can go there. I see no value in adding profanity to what we are already discussing. Plus, the tone and atmosphere of the other two boards are not at the same caliber as Badweb and I do not want to see the standard lowered.
