So Marquez' high side resulted in reaggravating his optic issues again. His career is definitely going to be cut short if he keeps crashing like this. Unfortunately, if he slows down, he'll stop winning. Tough decision for him... | ||

I was watching it when it happened. He was balls out flying. The track was perilous. It was inevitable. Everyone had been crashing during free practice and qualifying due to the wrong stone used when the track was resurfaced, according to the engineer who was overseeing it. He was doing it remotely due to Covid restrictions and the company that performed the work failed to separate the limestone. They were saying it was breaking down under the force of the high horse powered motorcycles. It was unfortunate that Marquez wasn’t more cautious. He had already gone down a few times before that high side. It was nearly as bad as the one that put him out before. I think the rain for the race was a blessing. The riders were much more cautious and weren’t carrying nearly the speed into the corners they had been under dry conditions. Looking forward to Argentina. | ||

Alas, the mental and physical scar tissue is building for Marquez...something that every racer faces sooner or later. I still remember the massive high side that ROssi had in China? on the Ducati where he broke his ankle or possibly leg. I honestly think that was the beginning of the end for the Doctor. We could be witnessing the same for MM. | ||

Doctor Sánchez Dalmau Ophthalmologist “The neuro-ophthalmological evaluation carried out on Marc Marquez on Monday after the head injury that occurred at the Indonesian Grand Prix, shows a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of paralysis of the fourth right nerve, with less involvement than the one that occurred in the injury in November 2021. After this examination, it was initially decided to follow a conservative treatment with periodic medical tests. One can see why this would be devastating for a motorcyclist and I would imagine quite unpleasant to live with... Condensed From Wiki: The trochlear nerve, also called the fourth cranial nerve or CN IV, is a motor nerve (a somatic efferent nerve) that innervates just one muscle: the superior oblique muscle of the eye, which operates through the pulley-like trochlea. The trochlear nerve is unique among the cranial nerves in several respects: It is the smallest nerve in terms of the number of axons it contains. It has the greatest intracranial length. It is the only cranial nerve that exits from the dorsal (rear) aspect of the brainstem. It innervates a muscle, the superior oblique muscle, on the opposite side (contralateral) from its nucleus. The trochlear nerve decussates within the brainstem before emerging on the contralateral side of the brainstem (at the level of the inferior colliculus). An injury to the trochlear nucleus in the brainstem will result in an contralateral superior oblique muscle palsy, whereas an injury to the trochlear nerve (after it has emerged from the brainstem) results in an ipsilateral superior oblique muscle palsy. Torsional diplopia Trochlear nerve palsy also affects torsion (rotation of the eyeball in the plane of the face). Torsion is a normal response to tilting the head sideways. The eyes automatically rotate in an equal and opposite direction, so that the orientation of the environment remains unchanged—vertical things remain vertical. Weakness of intorsion results in torsional diplopia, in which two different visual fields, tilted with respect to each other, are seen at the same time. To compensate for this, patients with trochlear nerve palsies tilt their heads to the opposite side, in order to fuse the two images into a single visual field. The characteristic appearance of patients with fourth nerve palsies (head tilted to one side, chin tucked in) suggests the diagnosis, but other causes must be ruled out. For example, torticollis can produce a similar appearance. Causation (for MM): Acute palsy The most common cause of acute fourth nerve palsy is head trauma.[6] Even relatively minor trauma can transiently stretch the fourth nerve (by transiently displacing the brainstem relative to the posterior clinoid process). Patients with minor damage to the fourth nerve will complain of “blurry” vision. Patients with more extensive damage will notice frank diplopia and rotational (torsional) disturbances of the visual fields. The usual clinical course is complete recovery within weeks to months. They are having grip issues with the new pavement they said. Interview with Petrucci saying the bumps are still there but manageable. Watching FP1 it looked like they were having the most trouble with turns 11, 12, and 18. P. Espargaro crashed at 11 and later had a huge moment at 18. P1- Rins P2- Vinales | ||

On another note. The new announcers are terrible. They couldn’t be more boring. I’m not sure where the regulars from ore covid went but they were a very important ingredient in a motorcycle race. These new guys, well frankly, suck. | ||

You are watching the streaming package announcers? I suspect NBC will have their own issues with the announcers as well (like using the Greg White and Jason Pridmore from MA.) And this is another thing WSBK has a leg up on GP. WSBK announcers couldn't be much better IMHO. You are correct the announcers are critical for the enjoyment of the broadcast. | ||

No these are the new motogp staff announcers. The old guys, I forget there names, were let go when the pandemic hit. I think they were Steve Day, Matt Britt and Gavin Emitt. They were very colorful and energetic guys. They really brought a lot of enthusiasm to the race. The new guys kind of seem like they are leading a funeral. One sounds like he may have some brain damage of some sort. It’s almost hilarious. I’m not familiar with WSBK announcers but read a few posts from fans hoping they didn’t lose their announcers to Motogp when the old ones were sacked. | ||

Yeh he blew that start. I don’t understand why he ran such a wide angle to turn one. Oh well best of luck in Portugal. I’m not a Marquez fan but his performance today was mind boggling. He seems to be getting back to his normal wreckless self. | ||

Apparently “disregard for personal safety” is almost mandatory for top tier racers. I remember seeing an interview with Richard Petty a few years before his retirement. The reporter asked him why he thought he hadn’t won a race is so long; was it reflexes, stamina, eyesight, etc.? Petty said he thought the #1 reason is he wasn’t willing to take the stupid chances he’d routinely taken when he was younger, and that you had to do that kind of thing to win. | ||

Personal safety is an individual choice but he put others at risk on at least one occasion. That is his style though and he always seems to get away with it. I do admit that clawing his way from dead last to 6th was very impressive. Had he not had the issue at start I believe he would have won it. If he rides this way from now on and avoids catastrophy, he will probably clinch the championship. | ||

I am not sure he is at risk of losing sight. From what I have read, he could be at risk of having permanent double vision if the damaged nerve becomes permanently damaged. I would think after multiple traumas (at least 3 separate occasions that I know of) on the same fragile nerve that permanent double vision has to be in play at this point. Just to be clear, the damaged nerve is not his optic nerve rather it is a nerve in control of an eye muscle that helps rotate the eyeball. When it is damaged, the eyeball cannot rotate properly hence the person will experience double vision. | ||
