Hayes pole time last year was 1:24.249. As a compare.

Sitting at the hanger waiting on a part so we can fly out to Laguna, watching the live timing. For a few minutes I could't find the EBR's, I'm so used to scrolling down to the bottom. LOL. Looks like May will get into the 1.26:4 range which is about a second off his personal best on the RS. That should see him at least make superpole based on last year"s times with a 2.1% average lap time reduction they've been posting at other tracks. If he can keep on track they might not score points but they will likely be close enough to make a race of it.

UGH... got to get in the air and get out there, the irony is we're waiting for a part from.... ROTAX to arrive.

Guintoli was into the 1'23" mark in FP1 just finished (full times not out yet) so I would expect pole to be aT or under 1'23" this year.

I think May was 17th after FP1 and leading EBR (around 2.8 seconds off Guintoli if memory serves correctly).

Well, gentlemen, we may have the makings of a decent weekend for EBR.

FP1, May #16, Yates #20, and Pegram #22, all comfortably qualified. Geoff was 2.714 seconds slower than the top guy and his fastest lap was his last lap. Just MAYBE he'll make Superpole this week.

Go EBR!

May's speed was nice to see but given the sector times, I'd have to bring up the braking issue again. Also, it looks like Larry had an issue and had very few laps. Not to shabby...

The lack of a proper 'straight' at Laguna obviously helps too as you can see by the top speeds. The top guys are way donw on what we normally see.

Top Speeds
1 65 J. REA Honda CBR1000RR 254,0
2 91 L. HASLAM Honda CBR1000RR 253,4
3 50 S. GUINTOLI Aprilia RSV4 Factory 253,4

9 59 N. CANEPA Ducati 1199 Panigale R EVO 248,1
10 22 A. LOWES Suzuki GSX-R1000 246,9

22 56 P. SEBESTYEN BMW S1000 RR EVO 234,0
23 32 S. MORAIS Kawasaki ZX-10R EVO 233,4
24 19 L. CAMIER MV Agusta F4 RR 232,4
25 52 S. BARRIER BMW S1000 RR EVO 232,4
26 16 G. RIZMAYER BMW S1000 RR 230,4
27 11 J. GUARNONI Kawasaki ZX-10R EVO 226,

One word of caution though.....This is only FP1 and everybody will get faster. Some of the guys moving up from Supersport or injured last year have never ridden here before so will improve. May and Yates know the track intimately and have new engines for this weekend,so I was hoping for higher in FP1 from them this week, so lets hope they can improve further. It has to be their best chance of making Superpole this year.

Based on the top speeds it seems pretty clear May picked up some horsepower, so that's definitely a step in the right direction.

Given Geoff's caution to preserve his engine last weekend, it's even plausible that he was holding back a little in this session- easy enough to enforce by setting the rev limit lower.

Whatever else happens this weekend, it's damn sure nice to finally see some signs of progress.

I'm going to look at it this way.. there are only two EVO bikes faster than May. That in it's self is promising. In FP2, they will need to pick it up though.

Amen to that, Mike.

AMA Superbike first session just finished.

And now, the answer to the question that's been burning a hole in some of our brains for the last several months; how'd the EBR AMA Superbike compare to the EBR WSBK?

Geoff's quickest lap was 1m 26.575s and best speed was 241.4 kph.
Aaron's quickest lap was 1m 27.195s and his best speed was 234.5.
Cory West's quickest lap was 1m 27.638s and the best speed I saw was 240.209 kph.

So, Aaron, riding what seems to be the near-stock 1190RX they've been riding most of the season was slightly quicker and significantly slower than the AMA Superbike. Geoff, riding an 1190RX with at least an improved engine, was ~1 second/lap quicker and ~1 kph faster.

Let the analysis begin...

Jccott- Filmore is just quicker period, you could put him on an EBR and he'd still run in that same time frame.

Looks like the field is improving and the EBRs are sliding back down to familiar territory. I find it interesting that despite the slide they are right there with the EVO's which is what we all expected earlier in the season. Definitely picked up something though. EBR might just make superpole if they can trim a .8tenths to a second and a quarter or so.

FP3 complete. Geoff and Larry picked up considerably, but still lost spots.

Geoff now 22nd, Larry 23rd, and Aaron 25th. All still well within minimum qualifying time fortunately.

Geoff improved this session and turned a 1'26.087 lap, only 2.794 seconds behind the leader Davies on a Pinagale.

One more session tomorrow, then Superpole. Geoff would need to drop at least 1.171 seconds/lap to make Superpole. I hope he's still got something in reserve.

So here is my short report, since the other two dozen Buellers are not online as yet.

Interesting day, with some up and down points. On the down side, Aaron may have blown an engine in the afternoons practice. It smoked a little, but he pulled off and rode it to the pits. Cory also had some technical problems that were no engine related, out of his control and that of the team. Not my place to say what though.

On the up side, Larry and Geoff ran a lot of laps, and were very consistent, especially Larry. Aaron was running consistently as well until late in the day. I spent awhile in sight of the radar gun. Larry ran consistent 147-148 (you got it, American MPH). Geoff had high on the gun while I was sitting there of 151, with many at 147 or above. The highest speed among the other guys while I was there was 159,for a handful of laps. There were quite a few more at 156-157, but many running 153-156.

Watching these guys ride, all three of them, they are not out of their league. All three are competent riders, don't look significantly different than the other guys. More h.p. would help, obviously but they are not getting stomped in terms of top end like at some of the other stops.

The folks at EBR are great. They are friendly, excited about their product, and motivated to continue to make a great bike that is competitive at every level. Interestingly, they don't forget those of us they meet and some of them either read or post on badweb. Erik is here and listening to him talk, he is NOT asleep at the wheel. He clearly knows all the ups and downs and is aware of the difficulties and, sounds like, what is causing them.

All in all a great day. Met a bunch of Buellers, saw and talked to some of the factory guys, watched a lot of racing, or at least qualifying.
