Apparently they've been tweaking the electronics and have come up with some extra horsepower. Interesting- from what Geoff says, they're running a new tire this year and the team apparently had to throw out most of what they figured out about setting the bikes up last year. He says they finally figured out something at Laguna that should help them this weekend too. Let's hope so.

Looks like the EBR crew did hot find anything, because May and Yates are way off the pace at Miller, and last year both May and Eslick qualified on the front row at Miller. I think 1 of the problems is they replaced the Eslick crew from last year, that had alot of vetran factory mechanics, lead by Perry M, who had built the bikes that almost won Daytona 200 for 3 years in a row.

I thought Cory started; he posted to FB that he blew an engine.

Sorry EBR didn't do better, but at least there was some competition up front for a change.

Hope the team gets things figured out soon. Miller is the third track in a row where lap times are way slower than they were last year. The bikes were almost 2 seconds slower in qualifying than in 2012!

Just looking at the numbers on the AMA site, Geoff for example was back about 2 seconds per lap on the average speed from the leaders. On some segments, he was as high as fourth fastest, some lower but sixth or seventh or above generally. He was about 10 mph down in trap speed, the other EBRs more. So, just breaking out the numbers, not looking so bad. But, if Craig is right, that they are going slower than last year, then that is significant. With what they had last year, they would be about where they were last year.

So, what is the difference so of you folks who know? Is it a conglomeration of bad luck this year? The effect of traction control not worked out? Different tires (at least recently)?

Look at the article I linked at the start of this thread- Geoff says they are running a different tire this year. On FB, EBR posted that this Dunlop has much less grip at extreme lean angles than the tire they used last year. Apparently the old tire worked MUCH better with the EBRs. That would definitely explain how they're running slower this year than last year, despite advances in other areas.

Double digit difference in trap speed is ENORMOUS that is why they don't do well on tracks with long straights. Just too much to make up.

They were down 10+ mph last year at many tracks too. The new tires have less side grip and that seems to have hurt Geoff's ability use the EBR's superior handling to make up for the lack of speed.

Laguna
2012 Qualified 5th (1:25.043) fastest race lap 1:25.493
2013 Qualified 11th (1:26.701) fastest race lap 1:26.493

Miller
2012 Qualified 3d (1:50.219) fastest race lap 1:50.803
2013 Qualified 9th (1:52.143) fastest race lap so far 1:52.782

I think the new (American made) Dunlop is affecting all the teams' lap times, IIRC Hayes fastest lap last year was in the '49's, though the Yams and Zuks are still at the top of the board.......
I did notice that Geoff got faster as the race went on yesterday, so if he can just launch harder and start mixing it up from the beginning, he could at least improve his finish position. Aaron seemed to have a bobble, losing 2 positions, but seemed to have an otherwise solid race.
Hoping for the best, Go EBR!

I'm curious if they're experimenting with some traction control (Geoff had indicated a couple races ago that they would be starting soon).

In the long term, that should be a positive, but short-term it may mean scrapping everything they know about setting up and riding the bike.

Looks like they did find some speed overnight- May 6th at 1:53.154 and Yates 9th at 153:555 in today's practice.

Hayden did an outstanding job of controlling a bike with no tires, just a wow! A super big hats-off to May, Yates, Dominguez, West and the EBR crews. Stellar racing against the KTM folks. Hope Chris Fillmore is ok. Just superb!!!

It was a great race (thanks to my daughter who got AT&T U-verse cable this week!). Yates battled with Filmore for 6th for a couple of laps and the KTM crashed at some point.

Any idea what happened to Cory? He was running 10th, then checked up as if he thought the engine had blown, pulled over, realized it was still going OK, and pulled out again. He lost several positions, but still finished ahead of Hayes.

Interesting post from EBR's FB page:

"Well, yesterday was rough, Geoff was experimenting with a traction control, and the settings were off, so he finished 9th. Aaron had even worse luck, as he had a bad front tire that was complete grease. Really tough ride, as Miller is a tough ride with good tires! He managed to finish 12th anyhow.

Today was better, with Geoff finishing 5th and Aaron 6th. Dustin found a good combination, and finished 10th!"

So they ARE experimenting with traction control.

^ Either that, or maybe somebody wanted to negate much of EBR's cornering advantage.
