That's a hell of a gap between 1 and 2.

OK, VIR dropped out last year, what's happened to Road Atlanta? And still no race at NOLA?

It's not very likely that the #9 spot will be filled but Nola is still the best bet.The economy and low turnout at the races has caused alot of Race sponsors to back out. I spent quite awhile talking to Matt, a Speed cameraman and he said even they don't get much info but had said 4 groups (3 cable networks and 1 Major)were talking with them about shooting it.He was pretty certain one of them would pick it up but couldnt say when.
Theres many good tracks missing from the schedule and ones like Atlanta and Sonoma were my favorites for shooting.I am considering this year a transition year for the whole Industry, as it seems to take awhile for the bounceback to show up in Motorsports as it did for the slowdown.
Such a shame with 4 EBR's on the line. Lets hope the smaller fields give the guys a chance to perfect the bike without too much competition so results will show them where they stand relative to the big money bikes. With only one guy with experience they would all do good to utilize all the great information Geoff May has developed for EBR. Knowing how much Erik cares for his and Ronnies riders, that would be shared , proven by his getting that new engine to RSR for Daytona.
One of the better schedules I have seen is the upcoming three rounds.Road America, Barber and then Ohio, all 3 weeks apart mean get your butts to some of these races and come visit with ME!
I will be there with the motorhome and hope all of you will stop by and do some bench racing.Don't hesitate to approach me,I'm usually around one of the EBR teams and introduce yourself and get directions to my spot.Happy Race watching and cheer on our guys!

Ebear.... may a person or group take videos, edit and post them as non-commercial through a site such as Badweb or Youtube and not get hassled by the venue or the AMA?

I remember not long ago that some picture or video was pulled by DMG or AMA or Youtube concerning the recent Daytona 200 (I am not clear if this is a fact).

You may not know the answer (got some hearsay?) but maybe some of our more lawyerly riders might have some idea.

If nobody goes to jail or gets a lawsuit, it could be a cool way to get a different viewpoint. The videos could end up being better than the commercial coverage. Just as your pictures are better than most cycle magazines.

Even if EBR mounted a bike camera (if allowed) and ran it as a gift or promotional for their bikes, 30 to 40 minutes of being in the seat would be... WOW! I think Higbee and Crotch Rocket TV did this at Willow/Horsethief venue???There has got to be a better way to get custom coverage.

No footage of racing is permitted other than that owned by AMA/Speed...or whoever replaces Speed. Wish EBR could post on-bike footage from an AMA race, but it is banned totally.

However, they say that is the only way to have their investment and property pay back. Seeing what is happening elsewhere when IP is stolen and passed out free (music industry for one HUGE one), I can see their point. And either we support AMA or the series continues to be sick. The damage done by Ray Blank and others carries on today. Bitching and saying the series sucks is: 1) Untrue - the racers are so talented (Hayes, May, Cardenas, Yates, Herrin, Eslick, etc., etc.); and 2) Completely destructive, as non-hardcore fans are turned away by the stories.

There will be no white knight savior with an open checkbook for AMA Racing. You either follow the series and come to the races or expect a poor, if any, recovery.

We did. And tried to do it with AMA as well, but as stated above, the rights issues are complex on one hand and simple on the other. You can't sell or give what you don't own. AMA does offer some leeway to non-race or practice/pit footage, but since they have sold the race rights to someone else, they can't give it to you.
Worse is that even club organizations are beginning to require you to sign all rights to any media shot at the club event to the organizer, which kills any opportunity raise team sponsorship through the sale of media ad space, or even use your race picture in you sponsor's ads or website. What is so distressing about this is that, unlike AMA, they do not have the infrastructure or resources to exploit these rights for the benefit of the riders and do not pay purses to compensate the riders for these rights. In fact, the riders pay to race and so are also the paying to produce media for benefit of the organizer.
IMHO the old model of a broadcast rights structure is just not going to work for motorcycle road racing in the USA. The audience is just not there.
However I think that a motorcycle racing web channel could work, hench Crotchrocket.tv, but it would have to be a subscription based steaming model backed by a co-op of bike and accessory manufacturers and bank financing, or perhaps Youtube or Amazon or Netfix all of whom are stepping into original programing. Putting a deal like this together would require a huge effort and tremendous cooperation between entities that are in competition for the same market share. Not an easy thing to accomplish with an unproven venue.
But then this could be the rambling of a simple minded madman who just wants to go friggin racing.

It'll be really GREAT to see all of you...and to answer your Question:
Ebear.... may a person or group take videos, edit and post them as non-commercial through a site such as Badweb or Youtube and not get hassled by the venue or the AMA?

The short answer is, we are told(as HardCard holding Media) that we cannot post ANY race footage on any Public Media Outlet as the Contract holder (SPEEDTV) has all rights to Video footage of race.
However they do not hold rights to that which they don't broadcast, as in Warm up,Practice, and some Qualifying.
This is where I am attempting to produce some on-track footage for you,the public.
It won't hold the interest the Race footage would, but at least in Qualifying there is competition that matters.I have not spoken to Erik concerning on-bike Video during these outings but will soon.
OTT shoots during these outings and does some really GREAT STUFF! Look them up!

Anonymous, Rodrob and Ebear, you have warmed my heart with your responses. You are all so very correct.

If I want a song from the vastness of the internet and the truest sound, I can download, then I pay some kind of iTune-like dollar value and get the legal recording.

People do pay to see other people do some wild things.

Any comments are welcome on my unoriginal idea of views for pay, advertising embedded, public relations push, insurance hype and $ to AMA and Speed (whomever)? Someone will get the ah-ha moment and find a way to get the backing to shape the show. It is a formidable task indeed.

I can find little, more exhilarating, cost effective and 'horrifying to normal people' than motorcycle track days and/or racing. Watching it is not a 'cigar' but it is darn close. I am going to bed now.

I have not spoken to Erik concerning on-bike Video during these outings but will soon.

The problem we ran into was the new deal with GoPro. We had on bike cams, but one was not GoPro and the AMA made us pull it off immediately. Even for practice. The deal in 2012 was GoPro was the exclusive on bike cam, they got rights to any footage and you still had to by a camera from them, although at a discount. I don't know if it has changed.
I don't blame the AMA for trying to bring in revenue from any source. But it sure makes it tough for the privateer who does not benefit from the broadcast exposure that the factory/corporate teams get. I had no way to give my sponsors added value.

It's hard to adapt, and even harder to adapt successfully.

It's a shame GoPro didn't mail every competitor 10 mounts before the season, then hand each competitor tweaked cameras before each race, and stream live on bike footage on a special GoPro website so you can follow your racer live from on the bike while also watching TV or listening to the streaming audio.

That would pump up the GoPro brand, and pump up the AMA series.

I can tell you from my experience in another sport that there is a discontinuity between smaller sports and those who become financially successful. At the smaller end, we struggle for exposure and media coverage and sponsors are usually within our small market. Breaking into a larger market is a significant challenge and attracting advertisers and fans outside of the family is a confusing proposition. Often it seems like the proprietary rights of the organization are limiting in themselves. In this case, while the AMA needs and deserves the revenue that comes from ownership of the rights of their product, it also keeps a larger market from seeing it. It is a conundrum. Getting that first big outside sponsor that will carry you to the mass market is near impossible, but those who don't remain small and broke. My experience is you have to gamble over and over until it works. Reep's idea idea is probably as viable as any to show it to the world. I would watch and probably pay a fee to do so.

AMA should have free tickets for teenagers under 17, why becuase they have money and they dont know where to spend it. those are the kids that can get into motorcycles.
I say AMA shoud bite the bullet and take a chance. all these teens would love to see unbrella girls. umbrella girls need to be not attached to any rider. they should sponsor local high school girls to become umbrella girls they need to make the sport grow. Teens are the answer. it could mean them getting a bike or a car.

WOW Great solutions! Bads1, I did not get the feeling that anyone was trying to short the tracks but I would agree with you that they should certainly have a compensation agreement similar to a small recurring royalty attached to each viewing.

It is amazing how intricate the software and firmware is now for tracking an immense array of variables. For instantance I just got off the cell fone with our son who said I should try (on my cell fone) some new Android microphone (icon) that literally takes your voice commands and brings up what ever you want as in a desktop..... "do I need an umbrella? " and it brings up a weather report where you are standing. Highly intuitive. The AMA view quest is certainly around the corner..... keep up the ideas folks, I really enjoyed this!!!

A small recurring royalty. Most of the tracks financially are having a hard time even hosting the AMA races. They are having trouble with all forms of racing right now. They need sponsorship!!!

the problem is that kids are not interested in AMA, they are into NFL, WWE and even soccer. I bet if you got Vince mcman to run the AMA, they would totally make money.

They should sponsor High School Girls to be riders!!! More girls and women racing would be great for the sport.

The racing business is the entertainment business and most of these events just don't provide exciting enough broadcast entertainment.

yeah but guys like umbrella girls, lol
straight guys at least.
the sport is fine with males, I think is bad to try to force women into male dominated sports. they just don't cut it.
Guys also like girls when they have their looks, once they go south. !!!!
like in NASCAR. Donica is aproaching not hot status anymore, its sad when her major sponsor gets younger hotter girls to pose with her, cause now she needs help. : (

most 17 year olds DONT have money ha
they aren't working, and if they do they're still in high school so it is limited, so no money.

honestly umbrella girls isn't anything special. Kids these days can see the same thing online from their house without having to drive to a track and spend their whole day for 20 minutes of umbrella girls.

I don't have the answers, but I don't agree with XB on this one
