So I just sold my Harley Dragbike and looking to get more power out of one of my Buells. I was planning to put a turbo on my 2009 XB 12 but I also have a 1125R. I'm looking at mostly strip and some drag race. I would guess that I would like to have about 180 to 200 RWHP to manage to get some good numbers at the strip. What do you think, should I go for the XB or the 1125R?

From my experience the 1125r has more potential. Between being a lighter bike and having a liquid cooled overhead cam motor. I'm currently running on a stock engine 9.12@143 mph in the 1/4 mile with just the necessary drag race mods. I built my bike from the chassis up. 12" over arm ,drag race shock, mag wheels, air shifter, ebr sidewinder, ebr race ecm, custom ram air.

With a good rider and the right mods the stock 1125r motor is capable and proven to run mid to low 9's with the stock engine. littlebutquick has run a 9.10 et with a similar 1125r to mine with a stock motor. Other's have run low low 10's with minimum mods. There will be 3 engine builds that I know of for next year Me, puzzled , littlebutquick ( badweb members) I believe we will all be running 8 seconds at some point next year.

Thanks for the quick answers.

Do you know anyone that put a turbo on a 1125 engine? I don't know if the clutch and gear box are strong enough, but I'll guess there's only one way to find out...

I think I need some extra power in the engine since I'm 200+ pounds and the easiest way to get that power (compared to big bore & stroking + some more) would be to add a turbo. Of course you could go with nitrous, but then you always need to keep track of the pressure in the bottle to get consistency.

Mike, I noticed that you're living in Chicago and since you not too far away from me maybe you could give me a hint where to get the swing arm extended?

Edit. I saw in your profile that you got the swing arm extended by efr-racing. Have you any indication of the $ to do the extension there?

Thanks
Peter

Elton Fish of http://www.efrracing.com/ is one of the best turbo guys around. He can make a turbo system for the 1125r. Contact Elton he can give you an exact quote on a turbo and swingarm.

I truly love my XB, but there is no way in hell I would even consider trying for the power output you are looking for. It would be a complete hand grenade.

The 1125 based motors have been proven to make good reliable power. But for drag racing, I would definately look at nitrous.

It made my bikes very consistant. And it is not a big deal to deal with bottle pressure. Use a gauge, heater and a purge. Buy your nitrous in bulk and transfer it your self.

Set it up progressive. If you run ET, leave soft, pull it all in by 600ft. They will never see you coming. Done right, you can have huge closing rate with a "slow" ET.

It will, in a large percentage of runs cause the opponent (who can't see you coming at 800ft) think you broke or spun. He will throw the throttle at 1200 ft to be sure he does not break out, and you can wheel him at the line because of your momentum. You can do the same thing with a turbo, but it will not spool down as quick.

I agree with Fast, nitrous way easier to deal with. Get good automatic bottle heater and progressive controller.
Turbo needs better fuel pump and boost referenced fuel pressure regulator which with the 1125 having pump in frame is a pain to change. And then you need some way to add fuel under all sorts of different boost levels. You could use a piggyback set-up like a Microtech, but another level of complexity. And I forgot you need to lower the compression so turbo pistons a must.
Not saying it cannot be done if you have the knowledge or money.
Decent turbo-----1000.00
new exhaust to hang turbo and wastegate--1000.00
good fuel pump and regulator with plumbing,----500-1000.00
Turbo pistons and engine gaskets----1000.00
Microtech piggyback----450.00
Plenum etc---400-800.00

Pretty sure you can do a really nice nitrous set-up for way less.

OK Guys, the best way would be to use nitrous then I'll guess!

I haven't decided what way to go yet, but I will explore the possibilities with turbo charging the 1125 a little bit more.

The static compression is ~12.3:1 on this engine and I think the maximum should be somewhere around 9:1 to be able to boost about 10-14 pounds.

This might be a little bit too much compression to try to lower by a aluminum cylinder foot spacer? Also if using that method you loose the squish which is a bad thing when it comes to pinging.

This leads me to think that the best way to lower the compression would be to change the pistons and use one with a lower center but retain the height and shape on the outer radius of the piston top. Also it would be good if the pistons had the same weight as the standard pistons....

So where do I get turbo pistons for the 1125? JE Pistons or is there some other source?

I was looking in they order form from JE for custom made pistons, but it seems like i need some more info regarding the measurements on the 1125 pistons, and since I didn't split the engine yet I really would appreciate if there was someone who could help me with the dimensions.

The link to the order form can be found here:http://www.jepistons.com/PDFs/OrderInfo/custompist ons-orderform.pdf

Thanks
Peter

Blown, we use a 10mm spacer under the cylinders on our turboed Gix 750 motors and it works great. Holding up to 30 psi boost/350HP. We have manual cam chain tensioners ---not sure how it would work on the 1125.

Thanks Jim, I will let you know the progress on this. It seems like I will need a spacer about 2 mm (.08") to achieve a static compression of 9:1.

Does anyone know if there is a stronger clutch available for the 1125?

I found this alternative from Barnett but I'm guessing that I will need more clutch than this?

The bike looks really weird with the long swing arm! Luckily it should be quite easy to take away the extenders and shorten the chain to be able to use it as a street bike.

What springs are you other guys using when you have extended swing arms? It feels much too soft in the rear now due to the long swing arm...

Ok so I tried to change the front pulley to a sprocket but realized I need some more parts.... It seems like I need some kind of spacer/washer and a shorter bolt to be able to keep the sprocket in place. Anyone that knows where i can get it?
