There was all sorts of hooplah when the XBRR was launched, including quotes that they expected to win at Daytona. 'Win everything' may have beenan exageration but it wasn't far off.
Unfortunately 5 years on I can't find them (although I am pretty sure there were some pretty bold claims on the Buell web site before it folded.

If you talk about taking on factory teams then that obviously implies running at the front of the field fighting to win (or do you think they meant fighting against factory bikes trailing around at the back for the fun of it?).

WTF, clearly all badweb members are not Buell fans. Seems lately we cant enjoy any small victory or accomplishment without someone spouting some kind of Buell hate, disbelief, or "devils advocate" BS

I am a huge Buell fan (so much so that I gave up a 'proper' job and started a Buell business 12 years ago!). My frustration over the years has been the popensity for Buell to shoot themselves in the foot by either being unprepared. The XBRR was just one example, the press launch of the 1125R another, the recall fiasco of the tube framers another.

The 1190RR EBR race efforts have been much more low profile, much more professional looking to an outsider (which includes 99% of the worlds press) and so have attracted a lot more positive press than any of the previous efforts have, without the need for huge fanfares that always seem to doom projects from the start.

This isn't just a Buell problem, but seems to be something to do with small manufacturers per se. Norton have embarresed themselves pretty badly by announcing a MotoGP project that will never happen. Motocysz announced all sorts of stuff that never took off.

Maybe small manufacturers/race builders should take a leaf from Britten and just let their results do the talking. No fuss, no bruhah, just turn up and win.

That is just more absolute nonsense. You are just plain making stuff up. I don't understand it.


News flash: Apparently you missed it, but it turns out that it was Harley-Davidson who shackled and effectively sabotaged Buell's efforts to produce exciting race winning sport bikes.

Your memory is apparently recalling posts by people here, not any communications from Buell. Buell never ever hyped the bikes as you contend.

Blake, I have to beg to differ. They, Buell Marketing, mounted a massive effort on the RR. They rented out the top of the Daytona tower and invited all the top dealers to witness the effort. It was clearly expected to be an event they could celebrate. Some of it was driven by Erik's enthusiasm but a lot was just because they couldn't help themselves and was indicative of part of the problem with HD being involved.

By 1999 most of the recalls were sorted (other than continuing rear shock absorber problems). On earlier bikes there was a long list of recall/update items that was poorly dealt with by the dealer network and poorly managed by the factory in terms of publicity.

News flash: Apparently you missed it, but it turns out that it was Harley-Davidson who shackled and effectively sabotaged Buell's efforts to produce exciting race winning sport bikes.

That may be the caswe in hindsight, but it certainly wasn't apparent at the time was it? When all this happened it appeared that Buell had a pretty free hand to develop what they wanted to do. Nobody complained about being shackled or held back in 2006 to my recollection.

If they weren't shackled or rushed in 99 then there probably wouldn't have been recalls, however no one here will ever know.

My '97 M2 had 6 recalls,swing arm,rear shock,fuel tank breather,fuel tank hold down,swing arm safety switch,front engine mount.It took several months for the dealer to receive the parts to do the recalls,and the dealer in my area wasn't in any hurry to work on Buells anyway,they were treated like the redheaded step child.

I read some posts here and I got sick after some negativity.
I don't get it, if you dont like Buells efforts move on, there are plenty of sites where you non Americans can praise Honda, Kawaski and the other bikes.

I went to Daytona when the XBRR raced. I was never told by anyone what so ever that anyone expected to win the freakin' thing. At the time I probably was spending two hours a day perusing damn near every thread on this board and gathering all the Buell info I could from others as well...

No one said they were going to win Daytona. No one involved with the Buell get together in any way really expected a win. We were all pleasantly surprised to see the RR on the 8th spot though... And at that point maybe a few people thought that with enough luck a podium might be possible. It was Jeremy McWilliams on the damn bike after all...


But to say something even remotely like "Everyone thought it would win and that was just hype/crap/whatever" is completely false. To be honest I felt at the time that the expectations of the community as a whole were about right and I also felt that the combination of McWilliams and the RR did a bit better than the general consensus on the forum expected them to. To add to that...

I don't remember a SINGLE "official" statement coming from ANY direction either before or during that weekend that made me feel anything other than that their expectations were to throw the chips on the table and see where they end up.

I was at Daytona when the XBRR raced too, and I do not recall anyone actually saying that the bike would win it all, although I can tell you that we WISHED that it would. There were high level HD dignitaries who were in box seats wishing for the same. We were all disappointed at the result, but hey, that's racing. Those of us who were familiar with the trials and tribulations of the racing game took it in stride...which is more than I can say about the HD dignitaries. But as they showed a few years ago, in the final analysis, it didn't matter what Buell accomplished, their minds were made up that Buell was to be no more. The question that Johnson Controls' Keith Wandell reportedly asked HD execs when he took over was, "How long are you all going to support Eric Buell's racing addiction?" was answered. No more. I have never forgiven HD for it, and never will buy one of their products again ('cept for a few part for my two '96 Buells, and those days will be coming to and end as parts availability dwindles).

I DO remember Trojan trying to run the same line back then when the press releases were fresh and obtainable (as were our memories) and he still didn't make the case that the buildup was anything more than excited wishful thinking, with a wide margin for error...just as M1combat described.

I don't post here too much any more, but do try and follow the Buell Racing Board since that's what Jimmy and I do. I have a question for you concerning all the BS you seem to put up with here on Bad Web. My question is "If you do much fishing?" I ask that because some of the "Whackadoos" here seem to almost always cast some off the wall "Spinner Bait" you just can't seem to pass up!

Anyone who really followed AMA Formula Extreme Racing and the introduction of the XBRR knew it was just the first part of a program. It took something out of production and tried to stretch the AMA Class rules without breaking them.

Now that we know the real story behind what Erik was going through with the Motor Company, I believe the whole idea and concept of that short stroke over square in a good handling chassis was but just one small piece of the puzzle. HD-Buell Of Vallejo was lucky enough to be able to Buy, Race and then Sell an XBRR over one weekend at Infineon Raceway. Started 24th finished 20th and scored the first ever AMA points for the bike and I was proud to be part of that.

But back to my point, if you can please pass up on a response to what the Whackadoos troll with. It seems to me that they are not interested in anything other than Left handed comments and complements trying always to steel the thread.

Thanks, Jimmy and I are doing OK, but things are slow at the shop. We are kicking around the idea of a get together during the Moto Jam or what ever they are calling the Infineon AMA Round. As usual we will get the shop clean and have it available to EBR or any other Buell teams that might need a hand.

Yes.



2) Did Geoff finish in the Top 10 in every race of the year?

No, not even close. Geoff finished in the top ten in 7 of the 14 AMA SBK races in 2011; of those 7, two were on the 1190RS, which contested the final five of 14 races.



3) What other manufacturer has ever done that in history?

Probably all the major ones involved in SBK racing. Maybe you meant to say "with a brand new superbike"? Then the answer might not be so easy to find.
