Looks like Greed got the best of the VIR management.
I was at the Grand-Am/rolex race and VIR was making an effort to promote the weekend at that time.

Depends on if VIR was the actual promoter of the Grand Am race. I doubt they were as NASCAR probably wouldn't let anyone but themselves run it.

geez, this is an hour from me and I was JUST talking yesterday to another 1125 owner about how excited I was to go back.
Seriously, yesterday I checked the dates to make sure they didnt conflict with my race, they didnt, I was stoked on seeing the 1190 run in person.
And now this.
Ridiculous.

It seems crazy that the AMA didn't have a contract with VIR (in which case they could sue the crap out of them). Maybe this is all posturing and they just want more money. Hard to imagine what this will do to the teams and AMA.

Absolutely ridiculous canceling an event 40 days before it is scheduled. VIR should be ashamed of themselves.

I vote they move the event to Carolina Motorsports Park: http://www.carolinamotorsportspark.com/! ~200 miles closer to me!

There was some talk about adding California Speedway as the very last event of the year.

Perhaps the VIR debacle will put wind in the sails of bringing the event here. Perfect for me, since I live 20 miles from Fontana :-)

Not exactly true. Nascar comes to Road America and they do not run that promotion. The track does along with Elkhart. Nascar had demands to be there which Road America is doing so in a orderly fashion and more to come.

Fontana was shot down by the teams, mainly I think cuz they wanted to do it so long after the last scheduled event.

Dana- Road America seems to be the exception when it comes to tracks running the races. They tend to do it right compared to others.

Surely they can arrange for a substitute track, wherever it may be. Go to Canada if they have to.

Exactly my thought!

The teams in favor of the Fontana round were citing sponsor commitments of having the 10 promised AMA rounds. Now down to 8 rounds, this might force the hand of the AMA.

I would LOVE to attend another AMA in September. How awesome would the weather in Fontana be at that time of the year!

New Orleans Motor Speedway is to open in about 6 weeks, I bet they would love the exposure of hosting the event.... Just sayin.... (They got that new F1 track in Texas, too)

Copied from a VIR email sent to anyone one their "bulk email" list:

Media Alert: July 12, 2011

"VIR has received a number of inquiries and expressions of disappointment regarding the lack of a 2011 AMA Pro Racing event at VIR. As with any disagreement, there are two sides to every story. We want to make it clear that the decision was not one-sided, as David Atlas' remarks have implied, and that VIR made numerous proposals to AMA Pro Racing to keep this event on schedule. Due to our 10 year history with this premiere event, we are as disappointed by this outcome as most of those we have heard from.

VIR has worked hard to bring the event to fruition for months. Despite requests by VIR beginning in December 2010, AMA Pro Racing did not deliver its proposed contract for the 2011 event to VIR until early June 2011. Resulting discussions made it apparent that insufficient time remained to negotiate the new terms in the proposed contract and, if agreement were reached, to plan, promote and conduct the event in a professional manner.

In an effort to preserve the date, VIR went to extraordinary lengths to reach an alternative agreement with AMA Pro Racing, which AMA Pro Racing chose to reject. Given these circumstances, we had no choice but to take the date off the calendar and notify the public promptly."

AHRMA is racing at VIR on the south course that same weekend, I'll be racing my 1125R there. I was looking forward to running over to the north course to see the 1190 race, I guess that won't be happening. The south course is a BLAST to ride! So if anyone wants to race that weekend on a great, fun course come on down.
Pat Mooney.

VIR has to do what they have to do. Given the times, you would think the AMA would be easier to deal with. But I suspect (could be wrong) the AMA has a bit of a "tude"...

how do you feel now that VIR has released their side of the argument?

As the original FVIR poster, my opinion hasn't much changed. To believe VIR's side of the story, you'd have to believe that all events held before mid-June were held without a binding contract between the DMG, the tracks and any promotors of the events. Or I guess you can believe that VIR's contract was lost in the mail.

Unfortunately, one side of the story does a better job of passing the smell test and for the first I can think of, it's AMA Pro Racings.

BTW, I'm not trying snippy or a dick or anything, but it's hard to find sound business logic in their press release.

When I first heard the event was cancelled my first thought was, "wow, just when it seems like the DMG gets something right, they screw up again."

If VIR didn't have a contract until mid summer they should have never put the race on the schedule. They should have put it out there for the sponsors, teams and fans to know that there would be no race due to AMA's lack of. the press would have then put the pressure on AMA.

BTW the VIR response is a PR finger pointing with no real info.

unless the track was actually going to lose $$$.
