>>>- one can't always be objective!

Actually . . and I well realize the fancy of trying to ply this opinion . . my bet is that Steve, true to form since he penned his first Buell review . . . isn't willing to put his journalistic reputation at stake by writing anything that is as accurate as possible.

He didn't get to be one of the big names in the motorcycle industry and journalistic community creating facts.

Again . . that's my opinion . . nothing else. But . . . it's based on reading a LOT of Steve's work for the past 15 or so years, knowing him and his reputation in the industry.

Most folks who've been around for a bit are quite familiar with Steve and his work. He's smart and rides as good as he writes.

It's a fact.

The irony here is that I think people are making two different assumptions here, both equally wrong:

1) That Steve Anderson, who *could* reasonably be considered biased in favor of this bike, could not write a reasonably objective article about the bike.

2) That other motorcycle journalists, who are unarguably biased in favor of *other* bikes, don't write un-objective articles about other bikes.

The perfect example is Kevin Cameron's hit job on the 1125R after it won the AMA American Sport Bike class. His bias towards Japanese inline four platforms and teams lead him to write an article that was not only badly slanted against the Buell, but that had some very fundamental factual errors claiming the Buell had some sort of huge advantage.

I thought Steve's article was a fantastic piece of writing about a fantastic bike.

Hey, the bike is so extraordinarily good that's it damn hard to find anything to complain about. My only wish -- other than having one in my garage -- is that Erik would come up with some combination hand guard/brake-lever-guard to keep the high-speed wind blast off your hands. Other than that it's almost perfect.

ALMOST perfect? That certainly is a cheap shot! All Buell motorcycles ARE perfect...just like my daughters.

Update from Millers and what Geoff and Michael Tjon told me on Monday at MMP:

While talking to both Geoff and Michael as seen in pictures from my other post of MMP results they both said about the same thing and I will just paraphrase as we talked about 20 minutes with each one. I also asked them both for permission to post this here on BadWeb so here it goes:

They were both about on the same track with where we are on homologation into AMA racing and with two main issues; first Michael told me they have two "race bikes" ready to go racing when they can. The 30 street bikes needed are also made but waiting for some needed parts from suppliers. He mentioned a simple thing like rear axles. Both he and Geoff said that Erik Buell Racing is waiting for the slow process of EPA certification to get completed,(sounds like typical government bureaucracy to me), another strong hangup. As has been said before he also mentioned what Geoff said also, that the 1190 street version is considerably better and stronger then the race 1125 that had just take 7th here at MMP yesterday. WOW! The 1190 race bikes should really be competitive. I asked them what kind of lap times they made at Road America a few weeks ago testing the 1190 to compare with SB times from them and others but they said they did not monitor times. OK. Geoff said repeatedly how much he is wanting his "new" bike. I also asked what kind of changes are allowed to engines in AMA SB from street version to race version. Geoff told me AMA allows some compression raising, fuel tuning, of course, and cam timing on duration but not lift. A lot of H.P. there to be had IMHO.

I believe we are not too far away from seeing our new bikes running in AMA SB soon so we owe Erik Buell Racing our patience to do what they do best and continue to be "a true force in AMA racing", an American dream come true. As should be, if I have mis- spoken in any way, please correct me.

And finally; Go Erik, Geoff and all the Elves! Have an absolutely great year, you all deserve it!

It's "P&P" . . . Paperwork (thanks Feds) and a part.

I've got a story written I may have to share.

These are, without doubt, the most amazing time in Erik Buell's history. They've throttled back to a 20 hour day, 7 days a week at this point.

But . . the magnitude of what's happened in the last 30 days, actually since about May 5. . . is nearly unbelievable and statistically (yep, I put the paper and pencil to it) impossible.

Never doubt the power of an Elf.

No.

Fingers crossed.

It's a matter of how fast folks process paperwork. . . .Geoff and the team are chomping at the bit.

Gorgeous, fine-handling and remarkably fast, it is everything we ever wanted an American superbike to be.

From a magazine that has always looked for a way to badmouth Buells.

Please! It would be poetic, as Mid Ohio was where I was one of the first civilians to ride the 1125R, thanks to Buell's generosity and lucky timing with an inside pass track day.

I thought they were always fair. I know we all love our Buells and were out and out blind to their faults but they were quite lacking in every department (except handling) when compared to their competition from Europe and Asia.

Now we know that those faults had NOTHING to do with Erik and the Elves who were tasked with building silk purses out of sow's ears (and they did a damned good job of it, too), and everything to do with those short-sighted PINHEADS at the Motor Company.

Now that the handcuffs are off we can see what he is REALLY capable of. No more excuses, only victories. Go Erik Buell Racing!!

I think Crusty mixed up Motorcyclist and Sport Bike Rider. They seemed to go out of their way to trash Buells until very recently.

Ok back to the original question. When might we see the 1190RR being raced in AMA competition? I hope its soon. And are there any pictures of the 1190RR`s that are (I hope) ready to ride? I am going to VIR but hope we see them by the next race. Geoff spoke of the new bike on TV at barber the announcer actually thought Geoff was riding the 1190.

Motorcyclist had a long history of bashing Buells throughout the '90s and well into the new millenium. Under the editorial guidance of Mitch Boehm, who immediately prior to taking the job at the rag, worked for American Honda, they found any excuse to slam Buells. Their voice was the loudest in decrying the steering geometry of the XB platform as being too steep, and they were certain that the bike would handle poorly; and expressed their opinion loudly at every opportunity. They could find something wrong with every tuber they tested, and would gloss over any positive attributes as being insignificant. I stopped buying the rag a long while ago, as it was blatantly biased, while preaching objectivity.
I did not mix up Motorcyclist and Sport Bike Rider; I've never even glanced through a copy of the latter rag.
Perhaps Motorcyclist has changed for the better, but they lost my business years ago, and I don't really care to give them any of my money whatsoever. As soon as they fold, there will be room for a better magazine.

It really was the motoquivalent of a bunch of bullies beating up a kid on the playground just to watch him bleed.

Their integrity died quicker than the bike.

They had a loooong history of bashing BMWs just to get a response out of the BMW Rider's Association too. I remember those days well.
