I was told today that running wheelie bars with regular tires like the pirellis instead of a slick was dangerous. Any truth to this?

No

I run the RaceTec Metzler on my S3 with ZERO problems.
I know Cronan on here, Brad, has three Firebolts, all with bars, and I THINK two have street tires. Maybe only one. But I know he runs a street tire with no problems (youngest AHDRA Champion ever, and hes been a class champ several times)

MANY people run a street tire with bars and have no problems at all

I dont see the point in spending the extra money on slicks unless youre unable to keep traction with a street tire, and there are guys running REALLY fast with street tires. As long as you have a decent tire you should save the money on the slick.
I actually have a spare tuber rear wheel that my dad picked up at a swap meet for 40 bucks. Was given a free MT ETDrag slick tire from one of my sponsors, had it mounted, got a spare rotor to put on it....but deemed it not worth the time, at this time, to relearn the bike.

I dont know why your friend told you this, its false, be wary of future advice from this person.

good luck Bud in whatever you choose to do

Thanks man!

I thought that for sure that was the case, and was sure that not every bike with bars I have seen had a slick on it.

You know how advice is sometimes.....

See you at The Rock

No.

I was running road race Dunlop take offs until they were toast.

Running a Shinko now which I'll run until it's done.

Next up is a Mickey Thompson full on slick.

Little late on the post but...

I think this comes down to your personal preference. I like the feel of the slick if I am running bars, this also depends on how fast your bike is and long you will be leaning on the bars. The flexible sidewall in the slick enables you to control the bike better when your front tire is off the ground. If you have a stiff side wall that you would typically find on a street tire your not going to have the same control by body movement.

This is only my personal opinion from experience with both. Take it for what its worth and figure out what works for you, but if I am going to run bars I will have a slick.
