Sitting and thinking of some of the milestones of motorcycle drag racing. Dug up some pics...some are not very good. But this is a good start.  Russ Collins rider, built by Byron Hines..the bike is the "Atcheson, Topeka & Santa Fe...those are three nitro burning R.C. Engineering Super Cobra motors. First bike to go in the 7's. Having lost his H.D. sponsorship when H.D. nearly went bust...Elmer Trett turned a new page and began work on a series of I-4 fuelers...His drive an vision put him on top of the heap, eclipsing all others...he was still the king when he crashed an died during an exhibition race at Indy. While not actually a "racer" E.J. Potter, the "michigan madman" put motorcycles an the 1/4 mile "in your face" with his injected smallblock chevy powered piece of insanity...to launch it...he put it on the center stand, revved it up an shoved it off the stand...what a show!!!  | ||

Jim "Da Judge" Mclure...Jim an his wife Phyllis ran a long series of H.D. bikes over the years. Jim was an innovator an a true sportsman. Co-developer of the "overkill" top fuel engine. I had the great fortune of spending an afternoon with them at a race in Florida...  | ||

For a bit of pure insanity...this is Borris Murray on the Denco "Triple triple" three Kawasaki H-2 motors nine open expansion chambers...it was in my own opinion awesome...there is nothing that sounds like it did.  | ||

Not to leave out the Brit-bike lovers. This is T.C. Christenson's triple Norton..it was the first fueller to run a two speed transmission and a clutch designed to launch without wheel spin. I present the "Hog Slayer"  | ||

This is Terry Vance on the Vance & Hines Suzuki fueller...Suzuki powered...Suzuki went so far as to make some cast iron engine cases to help keep the engine together...Vance was vocal about how scary the thing was. After winning his last event, he hung up his leathers convinced that the next pass would be his last.  | ||

i would like to inform all on this thread about another thread, which some of the pictures above are also on. If you go to dragbike.com under there forum there is a thread that is over 400 pages long about old stories and pictures. AMAZING! http://forums.dragbike.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=109 6&PN=401 its neat, back then there was no real 'definite' winner design, people just experimented with different things in search of the perfect combo. Some neat innovations and creations came out of it. Some scary looking haha spend a while, look at the pics, read some of the stories and for Boris Murray - he was recently featured in Cycle World a month or so ago. Joe Smith (legendary drag racer, raced HDs) posted Boris' address after speaking wth him. I mailed my copy to him, he signed it as well as sending me an additional picture, of his famous wheelie-with-tire-up-in-smoke picture also autographed. Great people Phyllis McClure still comes to the races |
