Well, the numbers I looked at were for 2002 models. I understand the new '04s are now the HP kings for streetbikes - 180HP with the ram air going, they're claiming. |

You know,it wouldn't be a bad idea for a Buell Team to hire Anthony Gobert right now. He has good experience on Ducati twins and he would probably be VERY Cheap to hire right now. It actually is such a waste of talent considering how fast he is most of the time. |

XB's 9th and 10th. That's pretty good.
When will this race be shown on Speed?
Oops, never mind. I saw the earlier post.
I'll be at Deal's Gap, but the DVR will definitely be set to record it.

Wish more of the inside story was known. Like, the Buell bikes are running very stock chassis, while guys finishing just in front and behind are running $8000 Ohlins forks, titanium exhausts, magnesium wheels, etc. Or, like the teams don't have enough money for qualifying tires so they qualify on race tires (cost of about 1.5 seconds per lap). Or, like due to some chassis set-up mistakes (which come from having little money or time to pre-test at the tracks), Mike's front tire went off after he had moved up from 8th to 6th in only a couple of laps. Overall, these two teams are really doing one hell of a job, and the riders are as well. They are building their confidence, their knowledge and their reliability...and I'll bet you will see better finishes as the season progresses. Hey and now at least you know some inside info! |

I think they are doing an awesome job, and deserve everyone's support. Having run our own team last year we know something of what they are up against and are fully behind Erik andd the teams from Hal's and Kosco.
Now if they could just ship last year's pro-Thunder bikes to the UK we'll happily race them here

It's good to hear the inside story.
Catch-22: You can't win races without money, you don't make money unless you win races.
Hopefully the decent showings will attract sponsorship money so these teams get what they need.

Anony; thanks for the inside scoop. It's great to hear that kind of info to put things into perspective.
Here's a thought; I'm sure Blake wouldn't be against a "Race Team posting only" page here on Badweb, where the teams/managers/riders etc. could tell their story as the season unfolds?? Just a thought, that someone with the inside connections could communicate to the teams and set up with Blake 
Matt, cool picture. But who's the rider talking to - looks like he's on the cell phone or something  I really like that bodywork.

Hal’s rider Mike Ciccotto rode a Firebolt to ninth place in the event, while Michael Barnes placed tenth aboard a Kosco Firebolt.
“It’s really exciting to see our dealer teams out there competing in AMA Formula Xtreme,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “It was only their second outing in Formula Xtreme, and we all still have a lot to learn to help these riders race with the front-running factory teams in this professional class. I am very excited about the diversity in racing that this class is bringing to AMA fans. This class has a lot of technical innovation going on, with the fastest laps very close to Superbike times, despite the bikes having less horsepower.”
Ciccotto qualified in eighth position on the 2.3-mile, 16-turn Barber Motorsports Park course. Barnes qualified in tenth position.
“We pushed hard but we were a little bit off on our race day set up,” said Ciccotto, who ran as high as sixth position. “The motor ran flawlessly all weekend and I’m really excited for the rest of this season.”
AMA Formula Xtreme is a class open to highly-modified motorcycles with 600cc four-cylinder engines or larger-displacement V-Twin engines. The next stop on the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship schedule is May 22-23 at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.
FX times close to SBK times despite having less HP?
Let's see the qualifying times from this past weekend:
SBK Pole Time: 1:25.251 97.125 mph, Mat Mladin GSXR1000
Superstock Pole Time: 1:26.626 95.583 mph Ben Spies Suzuki GSX-R750
Supersport Pole Time: 1:27.635 94.483 mph, Tommy Hayden Kawasaki ZX-6RR
FX Pole Time: 1:27.793 94.312 mph Vincent Haskovec Suzuki GSX-R600
To date, Supersport bikes with less horsepower and more "stock" than FX bikes have gotten qualifying lap times closer to the Superbikes at every race except one, Infineon Raceway.
As development of the FX bikes continues this should change and later this year the top FX should lap faster than the top Supersport spec bikes. |

Mike C's best lap time was 130.287 which would be 18 best (right in the middle of the pack)of the superbike times, so Buell's statement seems fair to me.
The best FX times didn't only come close to, but beat many bikes with more horsepower.

It's a fair statement, but it's not telling you the whole story when you consider that Supersport bikes, which make less HP than the FX bikes and are closer to stock because of the rules, are lapping Faster than the FX bikes.
Like I said earlier, as development of the new FX spec bikes continues they will get faster.
Cut slicks will be the next area of development, that's how Haskovec got the pole, on Michelin slick tires that were hand cut. |

Yes, that's right, it doesn't tell the whole story...like weather conditions when qualifying and racing are on different days, etc. And like the other facts provided earlier. FX getting close to Superbike? A fair statement. At Infineon Miguel and Jake actually at one point were faster on their FX bikes than they were on their Superbikes...that's in back to back practices. Best lap for 9th place in Superbike was 129.2, best lap for 9th in FX was a 130.2...I'd say that was getting close in times, especially when it was run on a day where the track conditions were worse. The statement from Buell isn't meant to tell the whole story, because there isn't enough room, but it is absolutely accurate, unlike Jose's innuendos. |

That does not change the fact that the Supersport bikes are faster than the FX bikes at the moment.
The point is, if you want to say the FX bikes are close to Superbike times, fine, but the Supersport bikes are closer still.
We have as close to a meaningful comparison as you can get by comparing Michael Barnes' Yamaha R6 Supersport times and his Buell XB1350 FX times. I understand that days/conditions might change but so far they have been close enough to provide a meaninful comparison:
Fastest Supersport Race Time: 01:30.019, fastest qualifying time: 1:29.837
Fastest FX Race Time: 01:31.153, fastest qualifying time: 1:31.798
So Michael Barnes can get times closer to the Superbike times on his less powerful, DOT Tire equipped, closer to stock R6 than he has so far on his 1350cc, Slick tired, XB.
Those are the facts.

Which bike has the "closer to stock" unsprung mass?
As far as the overall bike I don't think it's a fair statement to say "closer to stock R6". Completely true sure, but I don't see how that matters unless you are aiming for a blow to the stock XB compared to a stock R6 (although I think you would miss the point you "seem" to be aiming at).
His R6 and XB... Which one has more money into it? Not R&D but pure parts. |

I'm just glad that I know so little about racing that I can enjoy the hell out of the fact that, for the first time since I've been old enough to pay any attention, there are American, production-based motorcycles running in a class of the premier U.S. racing series.
I've never so much as watched any motorcycle race from start to finish on TV before, but I've been glued to my computer for the last two races and I'm looking forward to Pike's Peak.
I'm curious how long it will take for people to realize that there are "Harley Davidsons" racing in Formula Xtreme. Once word gets out, I think AMA Racing will see a huge surge in interest (Speedvision may have to consider showing it live, or, if that's too crazy, within a day or two of the race).
Jose' and Blake can argue tires and allowable engine modifications - me, I'm going to be screaming "GO BUELL" at the top of my lungs. |

Once again, there is only fact in the Buell posting. The new class is darned exciting, and is developing well...to the delight of most fans. Here's a comparison between the new Buell and a top of the line proven 600...Barnes best lap in FX at Infineon was a 141.8, his best lap in Supersport was a 141.4. His comment to the team..."Too bad I don't have more time on the Buell, I have so much time on 600s I know exactly what to do, but I haven't learned how to ride this bike yet...it's really going to be fast" But of course, Jose knows more: "Jose the all-knowing, famed guru of track, tuner of kings". Yep, sit back and toss out your barbs...it's your 15 minutes of fame, buddy... |

Harley rides don't consider Buell XBs to be Harleys. Take Daytona for example. In years past 500,000 Harley riders would show up for bikeweek, and how many would go to the track to see the Harley VR-1000s race? About 60.
I don't see that ratio increasing by very much for any reason.
