Does the piston scuffing that has been discussed only happen in the front cylinder?

I am not sure of the pushrod lengths yet. They are LONG though. longer than a Big Twin EVO. They are probably 5" longer than a stock Buell.

I personally haven't experienced piston scuffing related to the mounts. I scuffed one piston the first year I ran at maxton, but that was because one of my cylinders was fit to "production" specs instead of "race". My 4" bore engine is fit to .004 to .0045. The 160 is fit at .009". Very loose.

Piston scuffing. Now there's a subject for objectivity or subjectivity. Let's look at three frames: Tuber Buell, Rubber-mounted Sportster, and the earlier Sportsters. Engines have the ability to flex in two of these, to lessen the vibration of the loping v-twin motors passed to the rider. Earlier Sporties can make your hands and feet numb. So, when we have the torque effect of high horsepower in racing, the motor is going to want to move, which can be felt in the way the bike chassis reacts. Point being, in a Buell, the front of the motor has more ability to move than the rear. But, to answer your question, piston scuffing is not necessarily restricted to the front cylinder, but, to my eye, more likely to occur.

Like JeffB points out, looser tolerances make sense. But his extra brace on the left side makes good sense, too. If one is to take a Buell up to big hp and big speeds, stiffening the engine against flex while retaining the isolation of vibration must be good things.

Not a lot.

Dropped the heads off at RJ's Performance in Cedar Falls to get the valves & seats done. Bought a dual bore 5.4L Ford throttle body off Ebay to decide if thats the direction I want to go.

Probably going to pull it down soon for powdercoating of the frame and mounts.

The stock Ford TB is 57mm. Aftermarket ones are offered up to 65mm it seems. I am thinking of running the 2 into a common plenum manifold, so each cylinder will have 2 bores to pull through. The 2 57's are equal to one 3.96" bore.

These engines usually have 2 S&S D carbs into a plenum manifold. D's have a 2.25" bore which equals 7.95 sq. in. The 2 57mm will have an area of 7.91 sq. in.

So I am thinking that is a good place to start. If I go to the 65mm aftermarket one, it would have the same bolt pattern and have an area of 10.29 in^2.

Regarding cylinders moving around, I recall reading that they strobed the '77 (?) BMW Superbike cylinders on the dyno and were shocked at how much they waved around. Those are very unsupported, of course, but only ~500cc each, not 80ci!

Hi Jeff. I just looked at your facebook page for the race bikes. That 100 incher looks evil! The 160 is so huge in that tiny little bike, the wheels look like Blast wheels, LOL. I hope things are progressing. Steve

The 100" bike has been good to me. I think I hold something like 15 records with it. The only one that really matters is the 172 SCTA record at Bonneville. I think that bike has potential to go 180-185 on gas. It mostly needs a smaller rider I think. I want to go 200 and the 100" is never going to do that.

I tore the 160 frame apart last night to get it ready for sand blast and powdercoat. The heads are done and headed back to me. AFter that I need to check valve to piston clearance and finish up assembly on the heads.

I am still stumped on how I am going to build an intake though.

I will post pictures of the heads and pistons when I get the heads back.

Should be a busy week on the project this week. I am laid off for another week.

The frame is blasted and should be powdercoated tomorrow.

I will have the heads back this week too.

Things are going together, although I am not as far along as I wanted to be a couple weeks ago.

The frame, wheels, misc brackets are powdercoated. and back tother.

I finished up the clutch this week with some help from a machinist friend. It is a S&S set up they sell for Victory's. My math says that it should hold this engine and still fit under the stock primary cover.

I picked up a S2 tank, seat and tail section. I don't know if I will use these for sure or not, but they are there for back up.

Also, got a headlight and brackets thanks to the badweb. I am planning on running the bike without a fairing this year now.

200 on gas (and maybe open) isn't going to be easy, never said it would be, but that's the goal. 230 hp will help though.

Very interesting. Thanks for taking time to share Jeff. Those pistons look like something out of science fiction.

With the diameter of those cylinders, I'm thinking you'll have no worries RE their strength. The localized motor mount stresses would be more of a concern from my perspective. Shot-peening that region of the cylinder head and the bracket itself may prove prudent. Heck, shot-peening every region of the engine near a motor mount or brace may well prove prudent. That monster is likely going to test the limits of every engine mount/brace connection in fatigue.

But wow, what a work of art!

Can we see better pictures of the pistons?

Thanks for the compliments. I don't plan on challenging NRHS. Aaron's accomplishments with his bikes are outstanding. His open 1350cc bike has almost gone as fast as my 1650cc bike has with a fairing. He obviously knows what he is doing.

I have just been wanting to stick a 160 in a Buell for a few years and finally decided to seriously try.

Good thing I double checked my compressions ratio calculations and measurements. I knew something didn't seem right. My spreadsheet had an error in it. My piston dome volume is too big by 17cc, so I need to fix that before the cylinders and pistons can go on.

what's new? ordered cams (andrews V87), working on getting the trans assembled correctly, mounted a new front brake rotor, ordered brake lines/fittings. Starting with small cams to get it running and then planning on switching to S&S .800 after everything is working.

Planning on working on the 3D model of the intake this weekend. Going to make an investment casting and run a large single bore throttle body. 3-3/8" dia.

Bought a complete set of S2T bodywork from some jackass in Iowa a month ago on Ebay, but ...it still hasn't shown up. Hope I didn't ripped off. He says it was shipped last week.

I hope to run it at Maxton before going to Bonneville. That's what the brake is for. I would never run a front brake on the salt!

how do you plan to mount the carb as it looks like it is sitting so high it will hit the upper frame rail?

I should have good pictures of the rapid prototype intake this weekend. The manifold that is on there isn't the one I will be using. I am using it for reference points to design a new one.

It is going to be really close though. Here's a picture of pretty much the location. The injectors are inside the frame, this is just a projection. The throttle body is 3/8" lower than this picture though.

Hey guys. Need to take some fresh pictures, but haven't gotten around to it. So, what's new....Intake is rapid prototyped and sent to the foundry for investment casting, chain and chain guard are on, transmission and primary are together, starter is mounted (lots of grinding on the cases), oil lines are plumed, rear brake mounted and bled, and the shock is ordered.

What's next??? EFI wiring, fuel lines and pump mounting, paint, build battery cart, build exhaust, mount shock....fire the SOB up!

It is really feeling like it is getting close. I have enlisted some help for the wiring. Not that I couldn't do it, but I have friends who have real talent and willingness to help, so why not?

In the mean time, I am back to finishing up the 100" bike to get it running again. I am waiting for a 5 speed reverse shift drum from Baker. Otherwise, it just needs the wiring finished up.

Jeff are you going to run at an SCTA event this year. They have just changed the rules on tires. If the record your running against is over 200 mph you have to run racing tires. I don't recall if this effects you or not but no more ZR street tires over 200. It rule does not effect ECTA or the Bub meet. There are a lot of people up in arms on the landracing.com web site.
