Which is what I said up above: If you don't have confidence in slowing the beast down, you aren't going to go WFO and brake late with it, which would explain the bike SEEMING to not have the same top speed of the competitors.

Surprised I haven't seen any discussion regarding Troy Bayliss here...

I think BMW has done very well for themselves here. To go from nothing to a podium in under two years at this level is simply put very good.

I don't care that a couple of top guys crashed, who's to say they would have finished in the top 5? That is just a variation on the old "if my Aunt had balls she'd be my uncle" thing. It didn't happen.

That said BMW is obviously still "not there" but they are getting closer.

I celebrate the success they have already had and the fact that they are trying with everyone watching.

Good for them.

Bayliss is contemplating a come back. In a recent test with Ducati at Mugello he broke the unofficial lap record at the track.

The old guy still has it...

Dave, I think the last time BMW went Superbike racing, it was with the R90s at Daytona with Reg Pridmore aboard (1976). They actually WON that year.

That was a VERY modified R90s, and superbike rules (and the bikes themselves) have changed considerably since then.

Dave,

it was an honest podium, no doubt, just not indicative of where the BMW teams are relative to the top competition, not when three of the leading entries DNF.

That's all I'm saying.

Gotcha, they do have a ways to go before they are winning but still doing very well I think.

why would say old, its just a number I think people have this bias towards age.
the age actually to me is experience.
look at Rossi, he has done all those tracks that he must know wehn to turn at each track with a blindful.
Ducati will dominate next year when troy comes back.

Tardozzi seems to have BMW shorted the setup of the bike. He is the man !!! BMW would have started winning if they had a faster and young rider , like Haslam. I think their line-up is dictating their results at the moment. Would Corser or Xaus do any better on any other bike ??? No.

BMW's next step, is a faster rider. They would start winning. Tardozzi's next step, so who is going to be in 2011 ???

Bayliss returning ?? It is going to be like Shumacher back in F1 , a lot of hype for 2 rounds, but in the end , who cares.......There is no way Bayliss will start winning again.

Age is very relevant. Rossi ?? Do you actually remember Rossi's riding 7-8 years ago ??? He was much faster and was taking more risks. A 7 years younger Rossi would have beaten Lorenzo at Jerez 2 weeks ago , or at least ride at 100% for a dogfight with Lorenzo to the line. At 32 it is a different Rossi.

I agree with Blake on this one. Age isn't what slowed down Mladin in AMA Superbike... lack of competition did. Bayliss will rise to the occasion. Will he win the title? That might be pushing it. Will he have his share of wins and podium finishes? HELL YEAH!

Last year was "Old Man Edwards" best year in MotoGP. Experience counts for a lot.

Yamaha 1 & 2 going into Kyalami tomorrow... good to see "King James" competitive again.

If Bayliss comes out of retirement,Tardozzi will try to persuade him to go with BMW although I believe he will stay with Ducati.

If Ducati gave him Haga's bike right now he would podium the rest of the year.

That is the reason I greatly respect Carlos Checa , he is a veteran that he is still doing it because he loves the sport , not because he is a pathological winner (or bad loser) , that as soon as he thinks he will not be #1 , he retires as Bayliss did.

I just do not like this "game"....I will retire but .....wait...I want to race again....It reminds me of women saying "I am not so sure about my feelings , I am comfused...!@#!"

As far as Bayliss......Toseland won the title against Bayliss and I think he did it with a inferior (Honda) bike. So why to think that Bayliss will beat Toseland or Haslam , now ?? Ducati have lost their edge , and it was about time they did !!

I will take the Bayliss bet !!!

I just hope that Checa has 2 great races in Africa. He deserves it with that slow Ducati.

Bayliss would absolutely DOMINATE WSBK.

I have absolutely no qualms about that statement.
Give him Haga's bike or Xaus's (he has at least 15 ready to go) and he will dominate through sheer determination, I haven't seen anyone work as hard as Bayliss.

I disagree. Rossi is probably riding better now than at any time since he entered GP racing. The competiton is much closer now than it used to be and he can no longer afford to play the showman every race.

Bayliss should stay in retirement and forget a comeback. Surely it is better to retiure and be remembered as the best rather than do what Michael Schumacher has done and languish at th elower half of the top ten or risk serious injury trying to ride as fast as before?

Good result from Kyalami though : )

Is there any doupt that Haslam will be the 2010 champion ??

Good to see that Ducati are allowed to reduce their minimum weight by 3kg, from next round. It is almost impossible for the Ducatis to slipstream and make a pass on a 4cylinder , so I guess that it is fair.

Good to see that Ducati are allowed to reduce their minimum weight by 3kg, from next round.

Another political decision by the organisers : ( None of the Ducati teams had requested a decrease in the weight limit, and it was obvious that the Ducati was competitive at Kyalami, so why reduce it? A couple of poor results and everyone is clamouring to give Ducati favours again. maybe the organisers should insist that Tardozzi must work at Ducati for ever too : )

Ducati teams were pushing hard for an increase in size of the intake restrictors, but that has been ignored completely.

Only last week MCN quoted the organisers as saying that they had no plans to reduce the weight limits for 2 cylinder bikes : (

Haslam still has work to do before he can claim the 2010 crown, but he does look to be the class act this year for sure.

Biaggi doesn't have the heart for it. Haslam has. The great think is that noone thought Haslam could be this good. Also the other Suzukis are nowhere. A true hero's story.

Spies was lucky last year. Haslam on a more competitive bike would have given him some trouble.

You couldn't tell from his riding that "Biaggi doesn't have the heart for it." His attitude has mellowed, but his riding certainly hasn't.

Looks like he might've FINALLY learned: "Ride the bike, and shut up."

Biaggi is carrying a brand.
he is racing for himself, the factory and his country.
Italian racer, Italian bike.
the whole engine is based on the Biaggi\Aprilia image

good for him and I hope he spanks the japp bikes

I hope Corser can get a win, and I don't care who crashes for him to get it. It's great to see the BMW into superbike. The bike seems to fade in the end of the race. He has led but can't make it stick.

The great think is that noone thought Haslam could be this good.

Plenty here have known Leon was this good for a long time, he just needed the equipment to prove it. His CV is packed with experience even though he is still young, and he can only go up from here : )

Trojan , you were one of these people on this board that considered Haslam 2nd rate of the British riders.

Actualy you rated Byrne higher, or even Camier !!!

Remember Spies in his first WSBK events ??? You were saying..."it is too early" , while Spies was flying !!

No more "I told you so !" , please. Your predictions have failed in the past , in many occasions.

I actually said that Haslam has always had second rate machines in the past, and in fact I thought that the Suzuki wouldn't be as good as it has actually turned out this year going on previous form. Camier and Byrne were both British Superbike champions whereas Haslam finished 2nd, so it is a reasonable assumption to think that they are both as good rders (which they are by the way). Just because I rate Camier higher doesn't mean I don't rate Haslam (or are we only allowed to rate one rider at a time now?).
As for Spies, yes I did say that because it was very early in the season and it was too early to say what would happen later.

However certain predictions that 'Biaggi doesn't have the heart for this' are looking a little shakey though ; )
