thanks Wes! i was wondering Friday if we would even be on the grid with the front brake problem i was having. with help from Michael Richter at Erik Buell Racing the problem was figured out and should never occur again! Joel Spalding put in some blistering laps in the Team Challenge and i just had to keep it upright for the finish. that is one busy track with no place to rest. i had posted some 1:18's in practice and Joel said they timed some 1:17's during the race. with more laps i think i can get to the 16's! more than that might be a stretch for me. see you at Road America for the CCS round?

See you all at Road America.

you did a great job in your first race weekend!
Blackhawk Farms Raceway
5/21-23/2010
Left Louisiana 4am 5/20 headed for Blackhawk Farms Raceway a little later than originally planned due to unforeseen work issues. I borrowed my partner’s diesel Chevy 4x4 after putting a serious hurt on my Dodge van due to poor cooling on the transmission while pulling my new to me enclosed trailer. After some brief experimentation I found that optimum gas mileage/ speed was 14.4 mpg at 64mph so that was where I was for the next 1100 miles. This was much better than the 8 mpg at 60mph in the van. I hooked up with Joel Spalding late in the day and we rolled in at around 9pm to the track and dropped trailers. Joel and his wife Cindy went home and I went to sleep in the truck.
Woke up at 5:30 am to a heavy fog and mist and started unloading the trailer, setting up and generally getting ready for a great weekend at the track! Glen Carnell and Jay Smith showed up and Glen stayed for the practice while Jay dropped trailer and went to work. First practice came up and I skipped it due to not wanting to install the rains for the first practice only to take them off for the 2nd. I went out for the 2nd practice to some still sketchy conditions, did some sliding around with the rear and got reintroduced to Blackhawk. I had done the trackday here for the Buell 25th at a much slower pace on my 1125R street bike. This time I had some recurring brake issues where the lever would inconsistently come almost to the bar. I bled it between rounds and it reoccurred. The team had ridden past this at the last Team Challenge round but I was hoping that the radial master that I had just put on would keep it from reoccurring. I gave Michael Richter at Erik Buell Racing a call and I headed over to the race shop to pick up a new caliper, rotor and hardware. Michael gave me a tour of the shop which is mostly a warehouse for inventory and a few working bays for the race prep effort. Great guy! I got back to Blackhawk after practice was over and got ready to install some parts. I put some used slicks on for Saturday practice and installed the new caliper and flushed and changed to a different brake fluid. I fired up the grill and cooked up some Louisiana sausage, chicken breast and a baked sweet potato. Mmm, mmm good! Got to bed early while other racers were rolling in.
Up at 5:30 am again only this time to beautiful weather. Had a couple of good practices and gridded up on the pole position of the amateur group for the GTO open class 25 minute race. We were in the second wave with the experts leaving on the first wave. The green flag flew and the experts took off and when the last expert reached the apex of turn one the 1 board turned sideways and the green flag flew again. I got another great start on the Buell and was in turn 1 first but was unable to prevent being passed in the carousel at turn 3-4 and again at turn 5. I tried to keep up but was falling back a little at a time. I had a little battle for 3rd for a bit but dropped off a little and then another rider passed both of us putting me in 5th. I kept the 4th place rider in sight but made a few mistakes and was unable to advance. It got kind of mixed up when the experts caught us as the winner, Jason Farrel, was blazing around the track. I really didn’t know what my position was at the end of the race but I was very happy that no issues with the front brake had appeared. When I checked the results I was pleased that I hadn’t fallen further back, finished 5th and had managed some 1:19’s in the race. I did some maintenance, changed tires and brakes, had some new tires mounted for the Team Challenge and generally did some messing around in the paddock. Jim Berard showed up wanting to do some cooking so he fixed a good spread of brats, veggies and I threw in some more chicken and sausage and kept another baked sweet potato for myself. Good eating and conversation with the other racers and crew and I called it an early night.
I managed to sleep in until almost 6am and got ready for the day. We were going to only have 1 practice Sunday due to the heavy race schedule with the Team Challenge race and the Pirelli 600 Cup races along with the regular CCS lineup. I was scheduled for race 4, heavyweight superbike, in the morning before lunch. When I went out for practice I found that my brake problem was reoccurring and the lever was inconsistent and occasionally came very close to the bar. The only change had been that a different wheel, disc and tire assembly had been installed. The only difference in the assembly was that I had not pushed the pads and pistons fully back into the caliper prior to reinstallation. I removed the caliper only, pushed the pads until they were fully away from the disc as they could go, remounted the caliper and pumped the lever until I had firm brakes.
Joel took it out for the Team Challenge practice, ran some hot laps and had no issue with the brakes. We added a little rebound and I got ready to do my race. This was another 2 wave start with the experts leaving first. I got another blazing start and was in turn 1 by myself and basically ran out front for the whole race. I made a couple of mistakes in the middle of the race but was able to continue on and settle in for some good lap times with a few 1:18’s. I passed a couple of the experts but was unmolested the rest of the race. Woohoo, my first CCS win!!! Back to the pits, pulled the wheels to mount the fresh set, pushed the front pistons all the way in and installed a new set of pads, had a little snack that Glen’s wife Missy made and barely had the bike ready for Joel to make the grid on time. Joel’s wife Cindy took charge of our pit effort with Glen handling logistics for us and 2 other teams. Mike Kirkpatrick came in and also helped as he could and Jim Berard ran the pit board which was the most professional that we had ever appeared. Joel gridded up and at the start was in the wrong gear and had to make up time from there. I watched the first 10 laps and Joel was laying down times that I can only dream of as he was steady in the 1:15’s and even got some in the 1:14’s. I kind of chilled out for a while and listened for Joel as he went by each lap. You can tell the sound of the 1125R with the Buell race pipe and ECU. At about lap 30 of the 40 Joel was going to put in, I finished suiting up and made my way to the pit. I got ready as Joel got the countdown and when he came in I put the bike on the stand, Glen fueled, Joel jumped off and told me everything was good. I looked at the tires , got on and was off to the races. The first 10 laps went by with little effort as I settled into a pace but the next 15 got progressively harder as the heat and effort took it’s toll. I made some mental errors and missed some shift and braking points, carried long and slowed short. I was considering pitting as I tried to collect my skills in one place and saw Jim put the lap 65 board up. I dug down and felt that I could continue and finish the race and took the checkers about 5 laps later. I was glad to have finished and didn’t believe what Glen told me when he said that we had finished 3rd in our class. Glen rode down and verified that we were indeed 3rd so Joel and I took the bike down to the awards ceremony and accepted the team’s first ever podium!! What a great feeling to be standing on the podium amongst a bunch of fast guys!! Joel and I were both about wiped out physically. Cindy said that they timed me with some 1:17’s but I never saw any paper verification. Joel skipped his next race and we both got ready along with Glen for race 11, Supertwins. The experts took off first again and then we were gone. I started in the wrong gear this time, but Glen got a blazing start but I ducked underneath in turn 1 and was first out. Two riders got me in turn 3 but I got them back in turn 5 and tried to get away. I didn’t see anybody close and started getting tired in the middle of the 8 laps and made a few more mistakes. I lapped one of the other yellow plates and also passed one of the experts and felt that I was safe and relaxed a little. Went by another yellow plate and came down the front straight to see the white flag. I kind of forgot my markers and really duffed up turn 1 followed by missing my mark in 3 trying to recover. I saw another rider and concentrated on trying to catch him. As I was going for my brake marker for turn 5, number 74, Todd Evans stuck a wheel in. I accelerated and went inside the back marker before the apex and got to the last turn first and blasted out for my 2nd win of the day!! Todd was 2nd and Glen finished 3rd. We all packed up and as usual I was one of the last out at around 7 after taking a shower. It was a long way back to Louisiana and I got home at 5 the next afternoon. I had a great time among good friends and can hardly wait for the next race at VIR in June! A big thanks to everyone involved!

Hey Tim, definite maybe on road america ccs weekend. We are doing the XR1200 AMA series this year so it will be pretty tight between running AMA and AHRMA. Would love to do it though, maybe only Saturday or something....if you are looking for another team challenge rider, let me know! (I have about a million laps around there and plenty of 1125 spares).

If we don't catch up with you there, have a great season and congrats on the great performances!

Cool Tim, no sweat...Joel is an awesome rider. If you hear of anyone looking, let me know...maybe i can talk conrad into racing that weekend with me.

Hopefully we will see you at Barber...wife is due 9/1 with our second child so Barber is 50/50 at the mnoment.

Keeping up with Pat will be a tall order! he is riding really well lately. Hopefully the home track advantage will allow us to keep him honest, but he is a quick learner! Just as long as we can keep it all Buell on the podium and I will be happy!

Good luck the rest of your season!
