Spent some time with Skip last night.....got there just in time to help Jan get Skip back into bed. She had taken him for a roll outside to get some fresh air. I haven't been able to talk to him since Friday before last when he just jabbered away for 40 minutes straight nonstop then looked at me, stuck his hand out and said thanks for coming by he's going to sleep now. I'm still laughing about how he handled that. Went by last Friday but he was asleep by the time I got there but I was able to spend time with one of his daughters who was there hanging with dad.

Last night he was very talkative but wasn't in to good of a mood. He's starting to hurt at night from all the physical theory he doing during the day. They got him a tall walker (he's 6'5") and have him up walking everyday now, Jan said he walked 600 feet yesterday. He still dragging his left side a little but it's getting better even though it's hard on his bad back.

At this point I would say he has recovered about 50% physically and 70% mentally. He can now hold a long conversation if you are talking about something in the past but he does drift off point some with unrelated tid-bits. He is still struggling with short term memories but he is improving every week. He is very aware of his surroundings and fully understands that he has to work hard to get better. We were watching a little TV last night and when a caption came up on the show he would read it out loud. That was the first time I've seen him read which was very cool!! That one more thing we can check off the list that he can do again!

Scott

It been awhile since I did an update on Skip. He has been in rehab learning to mainly walk and function physically. He’s starting to walk fairly well with a walker now, but he still runs out of juice pretty quick. Before his crash he was around 225-230 lbs after he came out of the coma he was down to 170. What he loss was basically his muscle and for a long time his body rejected food with enough calories to put mass back on while on the feeding tube. Now that he able to feed himself and eat real food he’s starting to add weight and strength again. Now he needs to work on endurance and balance.

Skip was moved last week to a different rehab center in Houston. The new place specializes in mental and social rehab. This place only takes 20 patients at a time which should get him more one on one rehab time. One of the great things about this place is they believe in getting the patients out in public to help to re-teach how to interact in the real world during recovery. And with this policy Skip got to go home for a day visit for the first time since the crash. He was a happy camper to say the least!!

You can tell Skip is far more active mentally than in the past. He is initiating conversations, talking about current affairs he watches on the news, we even tech issues for various race series. While that all sounds great he still mixes story time lines. He will start talking about one thing and move into something that happened ten years ago like it was part of the first part of the story. He also has to be proactive when walking reminding himself out loud to take a step. Something we take for granted everyday like walking is not second nature to skip yet…..but it will be! I’ve challenged skip…told him if he continues to work hard and get to the point he can go out of town for the weekend I will take him to the AHRMA race at Barber Motorsports Park in October!

Skip has made a remarkable recovery with the help of everyone that prayed, given positive vibes or good will. So all of you out there stand up and give yourself a pat on the back for me. A special thanks to everyone who made donations…your generosity has allowed Jan to spend more time helping skip do his rehab after work and spend less time working late to keep a roof over their heads. So all of you also needs to stand up and give yourself a pat on the back for me.

Scott

great news Scott! That would be awesome to see Skip at Barber. Give a shout offline if that looks like it will happen. I think the AHRMA guys would love to do something for him at the event.

Hope to see the both of you at Barber!

He will stay in our thoughts and thank you again for all you have done.

Over the last week I’ve received more than one request for an update on Skipper. So I apologize for not sending out an update sooner but there hasn’t been a lot to report on. I can tell you one thing Skip does not like the rehab center he’s at. Lol The rehab is repetition based and Skip fines this very boring. He also doesn’t much care for the whole staff after he misinterpreted the actions of one of the staffers. You explain to him what happened and he’s understands but the next day he’s forgotten the we ever talked and he’s back disliking the staff.  Luckily he does get a break from the staff as he gets to go home for the weekend now and has even been allowed to take a couple of weekend trips to Austin to visit one of his daughters. I tried to take Skip to the AHRMA race at Barber Motorsports Park but insurance mandates M-F at the center.

In early October Skip was going through some mood swings and confusion…some days he would be OK but he would also wake up and be living 10 years in the past. One weekend at his house he was 100% sure that he worked for a company he hasn’t worked for in ten years and that he just got in town from a work trip he took for them. He spent ½ the day looking in his office for the paperwork from the trip, even tried to get on his computer to look for files. It took some work but we finally got him back to the right decade. By the end of October he was over the flash backs and was doing good. Had a much better attitude…upbeat and smiling, and out of the blue would even crack a joke or two.

Unfortunately this has changed over the last couple of weeks. He is now gotten very quiet answering questions with only yes or no answers. Ever since Skip has been allow to come home over the weekends I have been rescuing him from all the women folks (wife, daughters and their friends) for a few hours most weekends. We go visits old friends, go by the bike shops, go to my place and watch F1 and MotoGP and sometimes watch the Texans play. So I’m around him enough to notice the changes.

The one physical problem he has had throughout his recovery is the hole for his tracheotomy has never fully closed up. A few weeks back they started a new treatment that is showing some results as the hole is getting smaller and the constant discharge is going away. The problem is this is why his personality has changed over the last couple of weeks. The Brain is bathed in spinal fluid and is part of a closed loop system. The problem with Skip is his body has started making more spinal fluid than it needs. While hit trach hole was open it had a way out now that the hole is being blocked pressure is building. Skip is now showing all symptoms for this problem but from what I’m told this is common with head trauma. The cure to this is to have a stint placed in the brain cavity down the throat to drain excess fluid. Haven’t been told when this is going to happen but it shouldn’t be too far off.

Skip is getting around good with his walker now. They tried him with a cane for a week but his balance just isn’t there yet….in time maybe. I know I got a little long winded here so I’ll say goodbye for now.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
Thanks for the news! I can appreciate the value of a friend sticking with it through thick and thin. My buddy Nick put his life on hold for me when I got out of the hospital, and it saved me from many hard times. Tell Skip we're thinking about him, and praying for him.
Remember to take care of yourself as well!
God Bless,
Neil

Got a quick Holiday update on Skip……He’s home!! Skip is officially out of full time live in rehab. While he can’t take care of himself yet, he has moved home full time now. He still has rehab a couple of times a week where Jan will drop him off in the morning on the way to work and pick him up afterwords and the rest of the time he will be going to work with Jan if no one’s at the house to help him.

Skip’s spinal fluid issue hasn’t been rectified yet as he has two doctors with different views. Right now he is being treated with meds but after the first of the year they plan to do a spinal tap to remove some fluid to see the effect. This should tell them which way is best….Meds or Stint.

Tonight I’m taking him to mutual buddies shop where I am having some fab work done on a frame so he can help out. Need to get noggin thinking about bikes, fab work and welding just like use to love to do.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
