Wow! Very exciting news. Another talented, young rider . . . Knapp is coming off a 7th place finish in Superbike.

It's too bad Alan Schmidt didn't work out, but if Latus had to lose him, they couldn't ask for anyone better to take the spot.

Might take him some time to get the feel of the Buell, but I think he's got the potential to be a contender.

This will be good for Buell racing. The Latus group have the bikes going well. I interviewed Taylor when I was looking for my second rider....he was impressive. They will do well...all the RMR gang wish them good luck!!!

An excerpt from the report on RRW...

quote:

Saner grasped at the opportunity and brought his Buell and a skeleton crew to the WERA National Challenge round at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway, a short circuit near Talladega, Alabama.

“My first impression was ‘Man, I can’t ride this thing. It’s not what I expected,’” recalled Knapp. “I give a lot of credit to Danny [Eslick], because I thought I was gonna hop on it and have no problem being faster than a 600, but it wasn’t. It’s really hard to ride that thing.

“But we kept making some changes. Ronnie changed the triple clamps and the wheelbase and the geometry, threw on a new set of tires and we took it out in the 750cc Superbike race. Robbie Jensen was in the race and I didn’t think we could hang with his [Suzuki GSX-R] 750, so I thought we would just get some track time. But I was reeling him in, so I was like, ‘Let’s make a race out of it.’ I made a run at him, caught him and then in the last corner I went in real hot, backed it in sideways and got him to the line.”

“I went out there on used tires and pump gas, because there’s Michelin money to win,” said Jensen. “I didn’t see him until the last lap.”

With $600 of Michelin contingency money on the line, Jensen (who won a total of four races on the day) protested Knapp because the Buell 1125R was not legal for the class, and Knapp was disqualified. But Saner and Knapp were both happy, saying they accomplished their mission of getting Knapp comfortable on the Buell heading into the Road Atlanta round of the AMA Pro Road Racing Series.

Robbie Jensen gets no respect from me. I just gained some for Mr. Knapp.

Robbie was perfectly legit in his protest of Knapp. Jensen had legit contingency money at stake and Knapp knew he wasn't legally racing in that class. It was a good shake-down for Knapp however. "Surprising" a racer the caliber of Jensen is no small thing.

Many people will "use" an "illegal" race class for testing and setup - and then pull up to finish in the hot pit lane or they go to scoring and ask that their name be pulled. Happens all the time.

Even happens with AMA riders coming to Club races for testing. They'll pull off on the last lap just so they don't take scoring points away from the club racers who are in it for the season.

Last year at the AHRMA race in Albuquerque Doug Polen would start a race then pull off on the white flag lap. It was a promotional for him. For me it was just great to see a pro like that at the local track.

Jensen did the right thing. And I'm sure the Latus guys understood. I met Ronnie Saner (Latus crew chief) at the WERA vegas race in January. He's a real class guy (not to mention how much he helped me out in the pits). Can't wait to see what happens the rest of the season.

Steve,

I'm not disappointed in the protest, just the lame excuse for getting beat, "I went out there on used tires and pump gas."

Not too far off from "my faceshield fogged up so I slowed down."

I wonder why they changed the triple clamps?

They changed from aftermarket clamps with different offset and trail back to stock clamps.

The good news: Knapp is only a couple tenths off Danny's pace!

The bad news: They're both a couple seconds off the leaders at the moment.

The worse news: Knapp is listed as a "crash" . . .

Anyone have any details?

Hope it's minor, because it's a very promising start otherwise.

Don't look now but . . .

. . . look now:

http://wire.ama-cycle.org/

Barnes, Knapp and Eslick are all in the top 10. How cool would it be to see 3 Buells in Superpole?

And we knew Higbee, Eslick and Barnes could all be competitive, but adding another great, young rider like Knapp to the fold really gets me excited for the future.

They changed from aftermarket clamps with different offset and trail back to stock clamps.

I'm glad there is nothing deficient about the stock geometry.

Higbee planned to not make this weekend's race. Bummer but that's how it is.

He will likely make the rest of the season and yeah, a full sponsor would be cool. It'd ease the pain on his VISA card(s)

I'm always cheering the "underdog" and while my enthusiastic support for Higbee is very real, my loyalty is torn with the others out racing this season in both the Daytona Sportbike and MotoGT1
