QUESTION: If the pod on Eslick's Buell 1125R had NOT become insecure he would have finished ________ (look, it's just an opinion).

I gotta go with 1.

Dan was getting the feel of the draft whrn the bodywork broke. I think he would have won. I am prejudiced, to be honest.

You could probably do some extrapolating based on the lap times for say, the top 3 and then for Eslick. Where he would have gained a second, lost a second. Excluding the fact that he was way in the back of the pack, and he made it all the way to what, 15th? 13th?

I mean, he was FAST. Those first few laps, he fell behind a little at the beginning and then caught up EVERY TIME.

I think he had a really good shot at the win.

Needs more duct tape.

I thinking he would have finished within the top 5 at least.
It seemed happened during that first encounter with the lap traffic. Maybe he was nudged during it and weakened some critical fastening points for that thing break away and start flapping in the wind.

May just be me . . . but I think I, going forward, would give the bodywork an inconspicuous wrap of clear filiment tape . . . . who'd have thought.

And you nailed it "Chelle . . . duct tape, like BBQ, does not work in small doses. . . . if you have to use it . . slap it on like ya got it free at the state fair!

I just gotta say...

Buell racing? One screwup, on an otherwise steller performance. You rock!

Higbee? Without all the cautions, I think you would have been on a podium. You rock!

Daytona Motorsports and AMA? Outstanding job! I never sat through a whole race of anything, and I enjoyed every second of this race... ***great job***

Eslick? you ***really*** rock! Hellofa job coming back, and you were the man to beat. You were robbed, and fought the good fight. I was rooting for you from start to finish.

Great job by all. I'll be back for the next race.

And a side congratulations to Aprilla... great job as well... I hope the company makes it.

Congratulations to Buell, and particularly to Buell racers. I assume right now you are really frustrated, but as a faithful Buell consumer, I am proud of what you have accomplished.

Great work!

1st no doubt! Eslik was rocking!

Higbee put up one hell of a race too.

Great Job Buell Racing.

I could say Speed commentators need a few lessons.

The airgun comment when they were using and electric impact was pretty funny.

I love buells.I honestly do but seriously who forgot to tighten the cowls screws? But even before the duc tape embarrassment why in suffrin **&^* did the buell 1125r the ducati 848 and the aprillia 1000 race in a 600 class race. I saw the posted rules and it did seem wide open but really, why doesnt buell race the bike in the appropriate class. If you look at the specs and stats its should be like the sienfeld episode where Kramer beats up the little kids in Karate class. If you want to race, race in the right class is all im saying. They should have placed well, they were almost twice the cc's as the winner!

I think Danny would have bagged a first place, had he not had a problem with the loose pod.

Look at how far he came up after the Ductape infomercial. From 68th to 13th.

The whole pace car/ yellow flag / red flag fiasco allowed Shawn Higbee to slip into 5th spot. Good going Shawn!

First or Second!

I watched the race from Buffalo Wild Wings and saw the pictures only, no sound. It sure looked like Danny was P***ed when they were trying to fix his motorcycle. He even went over and got the duct tape to fix the loose cowl because they were screwing around with cable ties or something else trying to fit it.

>>>>why in suffrin **&^* did the buell 1125r the ducati 848 and the aprillia 1000 race in a 600 class race.

To bring excitement back to the race and it worked marvelously. There were the typical Japanese bikes but also the Aprillia, Buell and Triumph.

It was, like Daytona used to be, fun to watch and I spent the evening kicking myself for not spending the $127RT to watch.

Displacement is but one measure of performance. As I said the other day my F-150 has 86% more displacement than an Indy car . . . go figure.

The last time I was at Daytona there were about 38 people in the stands and the resulting races have put motorcycle racing about 2 slots behind beach volleyball in terms of spectactors. There is no way to get sponsorship for something only a handful of folks watch.

Beach volleyball got smart and used "bikinis" as their hook . . . admit it . . . you don't watch to see volleyball.

DMG awoke the "gone sleepy" Daytona 200 by setting out to create a parity based not on displacement but HP and weight . . . I'd say it worked marvelously and I won't make the same mistake of not being there next year.

Folks who continue to find themsevles offended are free to buy anyone one of the accumulated inventory of UJM that are languishing in dealers.

The season is just starting and this is the kind of fun I remember racing being.

Eslick would have had a top three. Bostrom, Hayes and Eslick would have continued to swap positions all night. Who would have won of the three would have been who had the best last lap.

Congratulations to Higbee. A true privateer this season with a top 5 on a newly restored salvage bike.

For the critics of DMG Pro Road Racing, I saw a close race with a lot of great action. This is what fans want to see.

If NASCAR (admittedly the WWF of racing) is so bad, why is it the number two watched sport and the most popular racing series in the world. Close racing and lots of action thats what we want.

Now they just need to make American Superbike be real superbikes with true competition between the teams.

It's interesting that RMR has at least one bike with the Buell bodywork:

I wonder why they had the Flexiglass on Eslick's bike?

I'd like to see other Buells racing Superbike with Shawn as much as anyone (probably more), but this is the way to get there. You have to crawl before you can walk, you have to walk before you can run. Right now they're at the walking stage and it's a lot more interesting to see 150 HP Buells racing 150 HP 600's than it is to see 150 HP Buells racing 210 HP 1000's.

But you've got to be excited about the future. That's why I was so excited about Eslick when they signed him - partly because he's a great talent now, but mostly because he will be a great talent for the next 10-20 years.

For Buell to be competitive in Superbike they need great riders, great teams and a competitive engine. Danny Eslick is a great rider, RMR is becoming an experienced team and, hopefully, somewhere, there is work being done toward a competitive engine.

Speed Channel did about as good of a job covering the race as Ecslick's pit crew did with that radiator cover. All you saw were the top four or five bikes all race long. "And the Buell, it's okay to say it." I think one announcer said. I have to admit I was shocked when the announcers realized that Esclick had caught the entire field on that restart but was still one lap down. I think he fell back at the end to support Higbee, because in the final laps he passed Higbee and was marching up to catch the top four but then fell back behind Higbee had followed him. No doubt if it wasn't for the Cowl problem Esclick would have been on the podium.

DMG may be onto something here. Look at the big four UJM and all their years of experience in racing. It would be very tough for little companies like Triumph, Buell and Aprillia to compete because they do not have the funding to develop a racing platform like the big four. I stated it earlier, if DMG said race a stock 600 against an Aprillia 1000 or Buell 1125, it would not be fair. All you have to do is look at Master Bike results to see the Aprillia paced all the big four UJM 600s. But allow a modified race ready 600 against mostly stock 1000-1200cc v-2 seemed to work beautifully. The factory UJM teams still dominated with the Buells and Aprillias only making it race. Best motorcycle race I have seen in years even though there is a learning curve on what to do and not to do under yellow.

Like I said Eslick is the Stoner for buell.
he is a very focus rider and agressive not intimidated by the jap bikes. man i could not believe the the lack of urgengy to fix the bikes.
his pit crew are a bunch of tards. they looked in shock like the other one was hoping the other to fix it. it was almost comical.
some one needed to hit them 2 clowns over the head. on the other hand the damn Yamaha teams had like 8 guys to the pit crew. i was like WTF

Elvis, All the 1125R's run Flexi-Glass bodywork in the AMA because it is the only aftermarket manufacturer that applied for homologation approval. Catalyst and others never sent sample pieces and their couple of bucks to the AMA for approval. That's what Trev at Flexi-Glass told me anyway.

Also, has several have already noted, the bodywork didn't break. It looks like some knuckle heads didn't use loc-tite on the mounting hardware.

XB, that's interesting info, but are you sure that's true for the Buell race fairing shown here:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/421246.html?1229285643

. . . because the photo I posted above seems to show that fairing and (it was difficult to tell from the brief glimpses) I thought that was the fairing Shawn H. was using.

I know RMR used the Flexiglass fairing at the tire test and I'm guessing that's why they used it on Danny's bike (since they had the bike set up), and I'm further guessing the Buell fairing wasn't available until recently.

. . . but that's just a string of guesses based on info I've been seeing here and there (that's something I love about Shawn's blog - it gives some real info and takes away the need to guess and speculate).

The Buell fairing looks like it's more solidly attached and likely wouldn't have had the problem the Flexiglass fairing had.
