I am new to track days and may start racing next year. I was think of things that might be of benefit to log during each track session. I have come up with the following;

Date,
Track name,
Tire type,
Tire temp,
Air temp,
Track temp,
Fuel type,
Weather comments,
Suspension settings,
Laps times,
Laps completed,
Misc notes...

Any other things that I should keep track of for each session on the track??

Tire pressure
Fuel level
Track conditions
State of bike (ie new ECM flash, new plugs)

Although laps completed (or distance) is all I ever keep track of.

How are you taking tire temp?

I currenty do not have a means to take tire temp. I know it can be taken and I BELIEVE the gadget is called a pyrometer. I could be wrong about that gadet name though...

Pyrometer is a good tool to have for tire and track temperatures. I got one from a pawn shop -- they're available from Sears, any tool store. Even seen them at Costco.

They're in infrared measuring tool - so you can only measure temperatures on non-reflective surfaces (like tires and pavement) Can't get air temperature though.

You can really do well by picking up a laptimer - a Mychron or Ultralap. You can use it as a tool to measure changes you make. Can't get too focused on it however. You ought to see it once a lap. When you are comfortable and can run lap-to-lap times within a half second, you will really begin to notice differences in small changes you're making to the bike and to your technique.

Some tracks will allow the use of a second beacon so you can get split times... kinda handy but a pain for track operators. Ask before you put ANY beacon out on the track. ONLY ONE beacon can be in use at a time - unless you're running splits.

If you are using chain and sprockets, record what sizes. Especially if you will be going to different tracks.

No chains/sprockets for now. I plan to stay with the belt until in becomes a limiting factor. I also plan to keep the motor stock (with the race kit) and some ECMspy tuning.

My priorty upgrades are race springs, brake pads and a ZTL2 8 piston caliper. I still have to pick up some better leathers, race stands, tire warmers, hardware for my spare rims.... and the list goes on... LOL

If you're re-tuning with the ECMSpy - save EACH NEW Program parameter set. Log the parameters that you changed together with the file name.

i agree in setting suspensions and brakes first.

but you are going to need a chain conv.(sure) .

if use ecmspy(or others) to play with the fuel maps
will you stay with the o2 sensor connected or not ???

safety wire (not required at all tracks): $5 for beer if you talk a local racer into helping you or $3 for WD40, $4 for a 1/16 drill bit and $3 for a roll of wire. Supply your own drill.
blue painter's tape $3

Leathers $? (my new AGVSport 2pc was $206 on eBay)
Helmet (I dropped $300 on a Shoei but any recent SNELL is fine)
tinted visor $40 (I don't recommend sunglasses)
boots (Teknic and others are $100)
gloves w/gauntlets ($100)

Oil change after every other session $60
Tires after every 6th session (or so) $300

Photos of you on the track $varies but ~$75

Track time : $100-$200 for the day
Races: I spent $150 for the 2-race/2-person in the gate day on Sunday incl transponder rental.

If racing:
Tire stands ($300 for PitBull)
Tire warmers ($30 per day with my local guys)

If not local:
Uhaul trailer ($25/day)
Chock (I spent $220 on Baxleys but there are cheaper ones)
Note with the Baxley they will help you in the pit if tech req the kickstand wired.


Probably needed:
Zip ties (can secure the fairing if you remove the mirrors and many other functions)
Owners manual (suspension adj)
stock tool kit
extra tools
service manual


extras:
drinks for the track
chair
sunscreen

My 1125R is stock (added heated grips, TechSpec, ProGel Grips and ThrottleMeisters)

My next big purchase that I expect to pay huge dividends and drop my laptimes dramatically: Gym membership.

Do not forget a portable/fold-up shelter (E-Z Shade makes a good one) for sun/rain protection. I have found it to be an absolute necessity for comfort and utility (I hang my leathers on it between sessions). I just wish mine had the Buell logo on it.
