So you can pretty much do whatever you want to your Buell except drop a 350 in it right?

Buells and other air-cooled twins are limited to 1350cc engines.

1350 is enough though, right?
The Buell will be competitive won't it?
Wish I knew more than I know...

It won't be easy. The 600cc bikes are predicted to put down between 140 and 150 rwhp. But yeah, I think a Buell can be competitive with 'em.

This truly is good news.

The season has not even started and you're already lowering expectations?

Here's the actual comment Kevin Erion said:

quote:

“I still think an inline 600 will be better than a 750cc twin. And a 250... no way. If you look at Rich Oliver’s lap times, they are slower than 750cc Superstock. While there could be a huge platform to make a 600 better, he [Oliver] can really only move his power up a little bit. You could get 145 horsepower out of a 600 – maybe 150 horsepower.”

He said that when the FX rules were first proposed, when all bikes, 600's included, would be completely unrestricted engine-wise. Even with that he said "maybe". Air cooled twins were not in this class at that time either.

That is no longer the case, and you would know that if you would have bothered to read the revised proposed rules.

If you get a 600cc IL4 near 150 HP using the stock throttle body, airbox, cam lift and valve sizes like the rules require you should go work for Honda.....

Could you guys bring some posters to the Summit Point event?

Thanks!

They do ;)

But of course they are "stock" bikes. Right off the showroom floor. Hey, lucky us, our stock bike off the showroom floor happens to make 40 more horses then all the other bikes off the show room floor. What luck! Honest. Well, maybe we "deburred" the heads a little, nothing special, but shucks, that don't mean nuthin.

;) Just having some fun with you Jose', we are all taking this a little too seriously.

If you guys want a sense of what Formula Extreme 2004 will look like, go to a FUSA event and watch the Sportbike Class. It is limited to 115RWHP, but the level of competition will be similar.

Next chance to see them will be Sept 5-7 at Summit Point in West Virginia. See you there.

You call it "lowering expectations" if you want. I'm just calling it like I see it. I could be wrong. Given that the factory Supersport bikes are faster than any Pro-Thunder bike ever was, I think my assessment of FX is reasonable. What do you, the almighty Buellstradamus, predict?

I predict that unless the Buells have a 20 HP advantage, as well as a handling advantage, someone will bitch that they're being discriminated against.

Posted by Blake over on the Borg
"Did y'all hear? Wes Orloff piloted a modified partially streamlined XB9R running on pump gas to over 170 mph on the salt. Average for two runs was 169 mph. Put the Team Elves RR1000 record away by 8 mph. That is HUGE in LSR terms. That engine has some serious potential. Maybe the Buells in AMA Formula Extreme might have a chance after all. "

Crusty,
I doubt it, but that would put them right on par with the Suzuki factory Superbike team.

Dyna,
Like I said above, maybe you missed it... "I think a Buell can be competitive with (the Japanese IL4 FX machines)." What is your point in reposting my statements?

I just like seeing you admit 2 times that the ama may be doing something that the Buells can actually compete in.

You are, you just won't admit it.

I predict FX Horsepower, Buells included, will probably be in the 130 range, MAYBE 140's, DEFINETLY NOT 150.

Since the AMA does not dyno their bikes regularly like FUSA does, it will be up to some magazine to get the info from the teams, or better yet, take one and dyno it next year.

or you could call Kevin Erion and ask.

If I see him next weekend at VIR, I'll ask him myself.

JQ,
The AMA Supersport bikes are putting down 130 rwhp. Don't you have a clue as to how amazingly fast those bikes are compared to their stock forms? Yeah, ask Mr. Erion. Ask him also what kind of power he gets out of his best Supersport bike.

Dyna,

The XB speed record bike makes 108 at the rear wheel out of a 984. Not bad speed for that horsepower, eh? Hey, Aaron, tell these guys what CdA that takes (Chuckle, chuckle)

God, I love doing real fairings. Too bad no one thinks they look good.

And what is the speed record for the XB? I dont have a clue.

As fas as Fairings go, Hals has one they sell & I think it looks pretty sharp on the XB.

Dyna,

It was probably from the post you copied over from Blake on BORG earlier. 170mph top, 169mph average.

Proof, please, you know, a dyno chart, a RRW article showing they make that much horsepower?

At the AMA Supersport level, tires, suspension careful assembly and Superbike Level Riding talent are a lot more important than an extra 10-15 HP.

Which is how Pascal Picotte on a Canadian Spec R6 can finish 8th at Pikes Peak and 5th at Mid Ohio AMA Supersport Races using "only" 107 Horsepower.

Lee Acree won the VIR FUSA Sportbike event earlier this year with "only" 110 Horsepower.

He just won a race at VIR this past weekend at the WERA event, probably on the same R6. He'll be at VIR this coming weekend for the AMA event, we'll see how he does against the factory bikes.

JQ,
I agree, talent and tires make a bigger difference than a few hp in winning a race. I never said otherwise.

Ever look at the trap speeds at the fast tracks? They are damn near as accurate as a dyno in guaging the power output of a motorcycle. When the factory bikes for no other reason than greater power are 10 mph up on the privateers who have bikes putting down 110 rwhp, the calculation is pretty straight forward...

(160/150)^3 = 121% 121% x 110 rwhp = 133.5 rwhp.

You love to quote stats. How far back did Pascal finish? How many leaders crashed out in front of him? I prefer hard numbers and the commentary of fellow racers. More than one of my fellow CMRA racers has participated in AMA racing. They have all confirmed that the factory bikes make power that significantly exceeds what a privateer could hope to achieve. Ask your buddy Kevin Erion. Ask Jeff Nash. Why the hell you are in such utter denial is beyond me.

So if an XB with 108 rwho is running 169 mph average..what kinda gearing does that take?

I know top speed is limited by gearing, wind drag & hp. More hp & you can overcome some of the wind drag. With a totally stock XB12 what is the max speed that could achieved right now? If the belt is replaced with the right sprockets & a chain what is the theoretical top speed?

Be nice to see what the bike could do with nothing more than a gearing change.

Have the proposed rules changes for the AMA FX class gone the way of the dodo? Seems that Blake has indicated so in a post under the "AMA seeks to please Jap daddies" thread. If so, this is really a shame.
